This was my first Nancy Drew game. It's a solid puzzle game with memorable characters and questionable voice acting. It just encapsulates that early 2000s PC game charm perfectly. Really great, well worth the $10.

Spoiler-free, just a general description of the game. As of writing this I have played 8 ND games total. Third ND game I ever played. Before that I played DAN, which I hated, and CRY, which I loved. So I was very cautious going into this one, but also, hopeful. You see, to get into playing ND I used an online rating I’ve found. I liked the little commentary offered on each game, and have used this rating extensively, to guide me through the ND experience. And this list had TRN as number one! So yeah, cautiously optimistic. Fortunately, though, I ended up loving TRN. It wasn’t as mind-blowingly good as CRY, but incredibly solid nonetheless. It actually shares a lot of elements with CRY, elements, that are not as common in most ND I’ve played so far. Both games are set during a single night, which tightens the plot, usually when game has a time mechanic, time and story end up being wasted on repetitive pointless actions, such as daily tasks (SHA), or messing around with the alarm clock, trying to figure out what exact time slot you need to progress the plot (CUR, TRT). This game, like CRY, is also bound to a single location (it gets a little bit expanded later on in the game, but at least there’s no map), which also helps to save player’s time and effort. When bound to a single location, you not only become more familiar with it, you also have an easier time looking for stuff to interact with. Compared to games like SHA and DAN, where you have to constantly cycle through numerous location (which take time to load), you usually end up forgetting about an unsolved puzzle somewhere or location of a certain clue you need (or you just fail to click on something), so you get stuck and end up mindlessly clicking through locations (it can become a real nightmare). Here you only need to keep in mind several rooms, and the loading between them is not too long. But still, this game is by no means simple or small. I only point out these two elements, because they help achieve really great focus on the story. Developer manages to get the most out the premise, while players get a greater sense of immersion. Game’s story is elaborate, without becoming ridiculous. It also feels like a real mystery’s mystery, since none of the people involved in it are part of the story. In this game you don’t really have to deal with suspects, or people withholding information regarding the main mystery. Sure, there are secrets you have to uncover, but all the characters are just as clueless as you are about the main mystery, and are trying to solve it alongside you. Puzzles in this game are also great! They are varied and unique. I loved the dancing shoes puzzle and the creepy dolls the most. I struggled with some, but they didn’t make me feel as bleak as the ones in DAN. Cast is also great. A bit overcrowded at moments, but they are a fun bunch. I loved the way some of them were written. They all had fun gimmicks without beeing too gimmicky. This game also has my favorite reason for why a certain character won’t leave their room and let you search it. I’m talking about the ghost hunting reason. However, Lori and Tino are an unbelievably bad couple. Didn’t buy it for a single second. Scenery in this game unfortunately wasn’t the most captivating. I mean there’s only so much you can do with a train, but still, I couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed by this game’s look, especially after CRY. Also just as a side note, if HER ever ends up remastering this one, it should really make all the art in the train selectable. Really a missed opportunity here. All in all, this game felt like a perfect come down from the height of CRY, to sort of transition me into other ND games, and level my expectations. 8/10 train could’ve used a bit more character to it.

I love this game so much, it's for sure in my top 5 favorite Nancy Drew games. I love the moodiness of the train, I love all the places you can explore. The puzzles in this aren't too challenging but not super easy either. I cannot recommend this game enough!

My favourite part of Nancy Drew. I played it as a teenager and now as an adult, and it's still great. Nice plot and story, interesting side characters with their own stories and motivations, some mystery and an unsolved case in the past, an investigation with Nancy's friends through the gameplay, and of course various puzzles. The dolls in the game are unforgettable.
