I'm gonna be completely honest, I'm only giving this a positive review because I can see the sheer love that went into making this game. Having said that, holy absolute shit on a stick, I think this game might just be completely impenetrable unless you're willing to spend a hundred hours on just trying to learn the basics. Let me walk you through what will happen. You will complete the tutorials, thinking you have a grasp on the game, and go to a skirmish. On the prebuilt fleets, you select whichever task force has the cutest name and go to battle only to find you have a quintillion missile types with just about zero description as to what any of them do. So you fire them all off at random in the battle and do jack shit and die. Afterwards, desperate to understand what the fuck any of them do, you go into the ship builder to try and read what your missiles do, and after navigating the arcane ship building UI, you come out even more befuddled as to what any of them do despite having an actual blueprint of every single component right in front of your eyes. So you try another battle and try to use them again. Some of them are direct, some of them are cruise. Cruise missiles you can navigate around the map using waypoints and direct you can only fire in one direction, but *sometimes* they're radar guided and you have to try and figure out where the fuck you're shooting them but the 3d space is so insanely disorientating you sometimes shoot them behind you or at the complete wrong angle so their seeker can't track a thing. Some of your missiles are direct fire with a lock, and those at least mercifully easy to shoot, but half the time I think I might be firing interceptor missiles at enemy battleships and I have zero clue because the only thing I can glean from the chaotically named missiles are that they have HE warheads. HE warheads kill ships right? I have no fucking clue lmao. Sometimes cruise missiles you can navigate, sometimes you can't, the time to kill can vary from a second to 'I have emptied every single missile I have and have done zero damage'. Sometimes your ships have point defense, sometimes they have countermeasures, but sometimes you only have like one countermeasure and will die to a missile volley the second you've expended it... I can't even begin to imagine the hell multiplayer must be with how autistically intricate every single aspect of this game is too. If you're like me, and you thought a semi-realistic fleet simulator game would be cool, you would probably be better off not getting this. You will leave confused and completely overwhelmed. If you are an autistic naval nerd that knows all the internal components of an arleigh-burke destroyer and know exactly how it's radar works, how it's missiles work, and have the spatial reasoning skills of a NASA engineer, this game will probably make you cum with joy, because this game was tailor made for YOU.

This is getting repetitive with Hooded Horse games. To summarize Hooded Horse's entire publishing strategy: Support a developer in making a unique game, see initial success, and then have the game fall completely off the radar with one major update a year (if you're lucky). NEBULOUS: Fleet Command was early in Hooded Horse's resume and one of their first real successes. It's also a brilliant game that takes clear inspiration from actual naval combat. A round hits you, and it doesn't do hp damage in the traditional way. Instead, it damages whatever components are beneath the round (assuming it pierces your armor). With a variety of ship designs and tactics to win a battle, the game is good fun. But 3 years later, the game is STILL unfinished. And I don't mean early access, I mean that there's practically no singleplayer content, a clunky and barely serviceable tutorial, and a small yet toxic elitist community as a cherry on top. It really does feel like the devs would prefer to tinker with their ships some more instead of develop the game . To be fair, the ships are cool, but I'm gonna need more than simple AI skirmish to actually test them out. Despite that, I think there's ample fun to be had in the current game, regardless of Eridanus Industries' future content promises. 7/10, get on sale, will be better with a campaign.

To sum it up. This is a sci-fi fleet builder, full-3D real time tactic, capital ship command game, with a strong emphasis on electronic and missile warfare. This will mean something to you, or will sound like complete gibberish. Is this your niche ?

While the game has a learning curve for sure, it is really really fun. I have sunk about 114 hours as of writing this review into the game. The community is generally friendly (Unless you're an asshole first) and willing to help. I recommend watching a video or two of the gameplay, then decide whether or not you want to buy the game.

This game doesn't explain jack shit to you. You do the tutorial, and then you think you know something about how this game works, but you don't. You don't know about the different damage types, you barely know how to defeat point defenses or how armor works or any of these things. This game DOES NOT EXPLAIN A FUCKING THING TO YOU. If you're like me, you're going to love the depth of ship-building and tactical play But this game is a solid fucking wall of "NOPE YOU KNOW NOTHING" for new players. This game asks EVERYTHING from you as a player, and gives NOTHING. These devs haven't got the first fucking clue how to actually effectively communicate the actual important mechanics of this game to players. The tutorial covers maaayyyyybe a quarter of it. People bounce off of this game in a fit of anger and frustration because they feel cheated, because they feel they're being stomped somehow for reasons they can't understand, and because INFORMATION THEY NEED IS NOT AVAILABLE TO THEM. Newbies are not treated well, generally, by this community. Many of the players in this game who HAVE run the gauntlet to figure it out, are impatient with new players who aren't getting any help from anywhere. The. Barriers. To. Entry. Are. Too. Fucking. High. The developers MUST create an on-ramp that makes it possible for new players to experience this game without slamming their faces into a cliff of frustration. And y'all need to start helping newbies instead of kicking them out of your lobbies.
