You know...I was pretty damn late to the whole Nier party....I was always interested in playing Nier Automota since it released, but life is life and I always put it on the backlog again and again until one day I decided to give this game a shot. It's funny because I only found out about this games existence a few days before I played it. I scrolled through the screenshots and thought "oh, this games a prequel, I'll play this game once and then watch the other endings on youtube to prepare for my Automota playthrough" OH HOW WRONG I WAS. Playing this game blind for the first time was like falling through a rabbit hole that just kept getting deeper. It made me laugh, shout and downright ball my eyes out. each playthrough slowly adding more pieces to one of the most deep and interesting tales I've ever experienced in my life. Once those final credits rolled, I sat back in my chair and stared at my monitor for about 20 minutes just processing the sheer ART I just witnessed. I'm currently halfway through Automota experiencing the same thing on that game too. Please do yourself a favour and play this game, It's nothing short of a masterpiece of fiction and touches on serious topics that many creators dare touch upon. It's borderline changed my life and all I have been able to think about every single day since I finished it. (If you read this all the way through then forgive my rant, I am just so damn passionate about this game and can't believe it took 25 years of my life to experience it)

- First play through was enjoyable - Second play through was worth it because of the new scenes - Third time through and we're getting kinda tedious now but there's some new cut scenes (I think? hard to remember at this point) - Fourth time just skipping everything to get this over with - Fifth time and you finally reach the pay off which was... I guess worth it? Kinda right on the edge, Finally some new gameplay which was definitely cool, and the "true" ending is nice to watch. But it would've been more enjoyable if I didn't have to play the entire second half of the game some 4 times to get to it.

This is my first exposure to the DrakeNier universe, this is a remaster of the original game Nier, which was exclusive to consoles. It had many tweaks, fixes and alterations with some added features on top. Nier gets mostly praised for its soundtrack and story telling. The soundtrack is memorable, the tunes of which made me want to stay in some areas just to keep listening to it, the option to shift to the Nier Automata OST is there, though I haven't tried it yet. The story is so good that almost every source, review or forum utilize spoiler warnings. The writing uses temporal shifting gimmicks, which works quite well with the endings system in the game, especially since every subsequent playthrough that targets a different ending answers most of the questions that I had in the previous run. I like how much of what the story has to offer in terms of context is also delivered through weapon descriptions, each weapon upgrade adds new entries to the story, which is honestly a cool touch that I really loved. I do however heavily advise against reading wikis and trying to seek explanations until you are completely done with the story and have finished every ending. The english voice acting is quite well and fits the characters. I liked how every characters' voices convey their emotions and makes them feel like more than just NPCs. While I can't say much about the combat, I was told that it resembles what players would experience in Nier Automata. I had little to no difficulties when dealing with the controls and I have nothing to complain about. The combat feels balanced around the different enemies and scenarios the game puts you against. The progression is a quite simple go from point A to point B. I never had difficulties following up with the quests. I only used a guide once just to cheat my way through for a specific quest for an achievement. I however wished if the map allowed for some easy quest tracking. I am however super glad that the progression is softlock free, as every necessary item that can be obtained through quests can still be bought later, should you miss the latter that is. Honestly, what are you waiting for? This is one of the few stories I enjoyed in these last years. It's worth its full price for what you get. The only thing here worthy of being complained about is a bug that often happens every now and then, where the fps goes abysmally low, to the point that the only spontaneous fix is to alt-tab and wait. There is a mod that helps against it though. Honestly, it is a really beautiful introduction to the DrakNier series; I hope to see a remaster of the first Drakengard games, namely the ones that connect to Nier. Given that this is a remaster of an old game, I really wish if they told more on what is exclusive to the drama CDs, since most of the important story events are locked there and can be viewed only on Youtube.

Before playing Nier: Automata, I wanted to check out what the first part was all about. That’s why I ended up putting off the playthrough for ten whole years. In the end, I got all the achievements in Nier: Replicant, and I’ve got to say - it’s definitely one of the best games I’ve ever played and one of the best stories I’ve ever seen, period. This is absolutely a game I can and will recommend to others. Well, now, in 2025, it’s finally time to give Automata a try…

One big warning: You need to realize this an "upgrade" from an old 2010 JRPG game not really a remake. It's essentially a remaster with some elements revamped such as textures, combat, voice acting & music. The old elements that a lot of modern gamers may not find enjoyable such as grindy, boring fetch quests, manual saving, small areas to explore and loading screens to get to different areas etc. exist. If this is a deal breaker for you, then you will probably not enjoy this game. (Side note, because of this, I think the $59.99 price point is way too high.) - If you played the original Nier from 2010 on PS3, then I 100% recommend this, to experience the much needed revamped combat and playing from the brother perspective rather than the father (Daddy Nier, you are still loved and missed) especially with the new ending E and the shipwreck content from the Ocean town; Seafront. - if you are coming from playing Automata and what to know the story before and all the eastereggs and are aware that it's essentially not much like Automata, then I recommend this. -However, you will not get the satisfying gameplay of Automata. The storywriting isn't as good as Automata, but it's still good. It brings about questions of humanity and morality. -It's a fairly short game being around 10 or less hours on easy mode for just the first playthrough and maybe 4-6 hours for each other playthrough. Also, not all of the multiple playthroughs require you to start from the beginning btw. Also if you're going for achievments, they are not really difficult, but really grindy. At this time, only 41% of steam players that own this game have reached ending A, and it's understandable why this won't fit everyone's tastes. It's a unique game and I personally love it, but I am also coming from a nostalgic viewpoint, having played the original and I can see where other players might not click with this one.
