July 2025
I thought it'd be really funny to make an excruciatingly through, longform review for the Nyan Cat game. This is the result. Nyan Cat: Lost In Space is the Nyan Cat game of all our childhoods. From mobile phone to steam, this is a port of the classic game. Rather than getting it for free as it is in the app store, for five dollars you can play on your pc. The game has no ads, all features on mobile, has steam cards and drops, as well as points shop items. I am not personally upset about it not being free to play for some of the reasons stated before, and for the fact that porting a game is not without work and effort. That being said, this version of the game has it's pros and cons. Pros: This is as faithful a port as possible, from what I can tell. There is no missing content, no missing gamemodes, nothing terribly broken. The gameplay loop is pretty addictive, especially with the different gamemodes and leaderboards giving players a reason to grind for better scores. The ease of play, being just hitting spacebar or clicking, makes it all the more easy to really get into the game. I find myself getting deeply invested in besting my high score, idly playing while on call with friends to have something to do, or playing as a refresher between playing more intensive games. It may not be the most incredible game ever made, but it blew up in popularity for a reason. It's just plain, silly fun. It isn't difficult to play, and if it is it's easy to improve quickly. The powerups are fun additions to the gameplay loop and keep things from getting stale. The nostalgia factor is also suuuper heavy here. Seeing the 2012 skin pack, or the music artist skin pack just makes me giggle. I love the time capsule aspect of this game. Cons: Firstly, and perhaps the most pressing issue, is that I find myself having inputs dropped. For a game who's main and only mechanic is clicking and jumping to proceed, this can be a majorly frustrating issue. My pc is not low end or anything, and even if it was, this game should be lightweight for what it is. So I can only come to the conclusion that it's something on the game's end. While this can be game ending sometimes, it doesn't happen enough to make me paranoid about it. The next thing is probably obvious, but... The music. I get it, I get it, the music was part of the meme. The funny part of it is that the music is silly and kinda grating, this isn't lost on me. However, for gameplay it's just impossible to play with it going in the background. What would've been cool would have been to have different songs you can unlock, just like you can unlock different worlds and skins. Speaking of backgrounds, a blank black, grey, and white background would've been nice for when the game becomes too visually stimulating, or to make it easier to see what's going on. It also would probably be a nice accessibility feature for those who have visual impairments or processing issues. There's a lot of games with visual overload which look incredible and I love styles like that, but if you're going to have that sort of look, there should be the option to make it less overwhelming for those that need (or even just want) that option to be able to play. For all it's cons, I do not think Nyan Cat: Lost In Space is a bad game. It was never meant to be anything serious. Afterall, Nyan Cat is at this point an older meme. This game was a mobile game from the early 2010's. Nyan Cat: Lost In Space is here for those with nostalgia for the meme and game. It also goes on sale sometimes, and of course anyone would recommend getting a game on sale, but tbh for five dollars its not a terrible buy, especially if you're a Nyan Cat enjoyer. Oh Nyan Cat, you can truly do no wrong to me. You know what, the game is perfect. There's no cons and anyone who thinks so is wrong, quite frankly. Nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan
