Works great on the Steamdeck! This was an xbox original exclusive that came out shortly before xbox 360s release so it got overlooked by many but it's an incredibly unique and fun game. It combines platforming, puzzle solving and first person shooting, still holds up 20 years later.
A quirky and unique game. I don't think I have ever played a game like this. This game is hard to explain. You are a bounty hunter looking to take down outlaws so you can fund your life-saving surgery. It is a mix of FPS and 3D platforming. You have an arrangement of different ammo at your disposal that has different characteristics for baggin' outlaws. The story and characters are great. I am not going to go into detail so I do not risk spoiling this for anyone. I was never bored playing this game. I have read some people have ran into performance issues. I ran into only a couple of bugs that were environmental. They were easily ignored and I continued on playing the game without issues or crashes.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (2005) was a very underdog game even upon its original release in 2005. Critically lauded, but a commercial failure that publisher Electronic Arts saw fit to basically shadow drop only on the original Xbox right as the Xbox 360 launched, the game was basically stillborn from lack of marketing and the choice to release it on only one then-current console with no next-gen console or PC versions. Only 600,000 copies were sold in total; by the time the game made the rounds in magazines garnering critical praise, people learned about the game too late, as it was already sold out, and EA wouldn't print more. As for the game itself. Stranger's Wrath is the most interesting combination of 3rd person platforming and 1st person shooting, merging something like Rare's Banjo-Kazooie with a zany Oddworld take on the 2000's FPS phenomenon kicked off by games like Halo: Combat Evolved. You seamlessly switch between both perspectives with a button press on the fly, and have combat options in both modes, using melee attacks similar to Banjo or even Crash Bandicoot in 3rd person, while then having your crossbow in 1st person to handle action that way. Damage is handled with a "self-heal" mechanic you engage manually, transferring stamina back to your health bar. The star of the show besides the "Stranger" himself is the "live" ammunition you have on that crossbow. With both primary and alt fire modes each housing a different critter that serves as your ammo, you have things like "zapflies" for regular shooting, "chppunks" as distraction ammo, "bolomites" to wrap up enemies, and so on. The primary objective is to "bag" bounties, which involves incapacitating enemies then sucking them up with a vacuum cleaner of sorts; alive is best for the most "moolah", but dead also works if you happen to kill them, and same goes for bosses. Upgrades for money, and you can both "hunt" and purchase your ammo as you go. The story is full of crude humor and some of the most memorable dialog you can imagine, while also being somehow deep, moving, and epic. Seriously, you will laugh and even possibly cry if you make it to the game's unforgettable ending, which plays out both like a tragedy and a redemption at the same time; we really didn't deserve games this good back then, and now we barely get things that qualify as games from the same publishers. The game has a classic three-part arc, with the first giving you the basic feel for the world, the second opening up to be a bit non-linear, and the third leaning more heavily into the FPS mechanics as the action intensifies. The only real problem here are the technical issues the PC port of this game suffers from, based on the 2012 HD Remaster originally a Playstation 3 exclusive. Graphically this doesn't do much to the original 2005 Xbox presentation aside from increase onscreen object count (especially with foliage and grass), and overall render resolution. You DON'T want to run the game in 4K, and probably want to disable fullscreen optimizations too. Some people may need to use Windows 7 compatibility mode too, depending on their hardware. Steam says controllers aren't supported, but that's not true, you just have to disable Steam input and use the game's launcher to select and configure a compatible Xinput controller. Yeah, this means you Playstation controller users may not be able to use a gamepad without a custom Xinput wrapper, but for everyone else, controllers work just fine so long as you configure your buttons before launching the game for the first time. Other than that, this is still a fun, quirky game that has a surprising amount of depth and character development, and the last Oddworld game directly developed by Oddworld Inhabitants with a wholly-original story.
