"Misery" is the most close word in English to label Likho I think, although Likho usually means an evil will, an ill fate and a reckless approach as well. As an entity Likho is the chaotic evil being who means nothing but bad news, cant be negotiated with (unlike Baba Yaga which is chaotic neutral and may happen to be benevolent) and ultimately wishes you dead. Any interaction with it usually has long-term dire consequences and should be avoided at any cost, unless you are terminally bored and want to push your life right into NG++. The game is based on the fairy tale of the same name and the story roughly follows it, being somewhat extended by a katabasis trope. The tales used are not made up, but based on the actual folklore, and most of the readings are provided with sources. Being a Morteshka's game - its great purpose is the culturological excursion into the mythology. Unlike Black Book, this time the game pries into otherland tales, like ancient greek, classic arabian and many others, exposing them mythos similiar to Likho in many cultures and raising the question - why in so many different places and times people would describe encounters with this weird creature and why these stories feel so similiar? Thinking about it is more disturbing than the game itself. While being a horror game, it does a mediocre job of scaring the player. Despite of very uncanny visuals you are pretty safe most of the time, the few moments where the safety breaks are brief, and failing them is not a big deal - you just try again until you succeed. The dread has no chances to settle. The good part is the game doesnt rely on jumpscares - these are very mild, if even existent, and all the panic-worthy events are well-telegraphed, so if you aim to shit your pants - you will have better luck with eating some herring with milk and then going jogging. The puzzles are mostly trivial, rather aiming to keep you busy than to challenge your wits, although the late-game ones can push your marbles rolling. No huge logics required. However, regardless of what I said above, i still rate it positive, mainly because the audio-visual experience is spectacular. The art direction is unique and sinister, the whole journey is while trippy yet rather coherent, not haphazard bad trip (say, Layers of Fear), the atmosphere of an unholy place is thicc and mere looking around delivers - totally worth a visit. If you are into black metal and appreciate Batushka (Yekteniya I video anyone?) - you will dig it. Also, setting stuff on fire here is extremely addictive and somewhat satisfying (if it is wooden then chances are high it is inflammable), which only adds to the black metal values.

What a great game! Morteshka did it again. It is a fantastic journey to a deep, dark roots of mythology and religion. Pacing is perfect, aesthetics are over the top, great optimization for the SteamDeck. It is not really a horror game, but it is a really spooky experience. 10/10, would play again (would play anything this guys make at this point).

RUSSIAN PYROMANIAC SIMULATOR I'm thrilled to consider Likho this year's Mundaun. Deeply personal, rooted in folkore, both disturbing and delicious, with a terrific atmosphere and a delightful mise en scène. It's a walking simulator with some puzzles, but what really shines in here is the use of light and shadow. It really feels like a plethora of nightmarish scenes directed by Orson Welles and Fritz Lang in their most disturbing trips, I really like it. If you enjoy experiences like Mundaun, The Signifier, Gray Dawn... you'll find plenty to love in here,

This developer, Morteshka, also made Black Book, which is one of my favorite sleeper/indie hits over the past five years or so and I have fond memories of diving into that game for a week or so during the pandemic. That's a game that is always on the cusp of "Overwhelmingly Positive" on Steam and rightfully so. I appreciate the lore this developer puts into their games and they really make you feel like you are immersed in the very, very, old world Russia/far Eastern Europe. A time of superstition and fairy tales, dark magic and supernatural entities hiding in all the shadows and dark corners of the world. TLDR: Less is more - the game. The atmosphere wraps around you and is somehow equal parts fascinating and apprehensive. I want to see and experience more and more and yet it all looks so...foreboding; I guess would be the correct term? It's like you can't look away but you know you're just going to sink deeper and deeper, like you're traveling through Dante's circles of hell, without the overpopulation. I can't get enough of it. I recommend it if you like creepy, old world shit that doesn't rely on jump scares to make you feel uneasy. It's a game that lets you take your time and explore it, to really look around absorb what it shows you. Not to sound pretentious but I kept thinking that this is what it's like to "sip" a game. You take it in slowly and deliberately. The puzzles so far, about halfway through the game, are all quite easy and that's fine because I'm not looking for a puzzle game. Anyway, as for the game itself, it's a first person, practically walking simulator that nails ambiance better than just about anything I've ever played. The black and white aesthetic fits here, probably better than color given the time and theme. Normally I'm pretty "meh" about walking simulators because they are just so by-the-book and and I don't usually feel like I am the one in the world. In most games like this I feel like someone is just telling me their story as I walk through the world, but here I do truly feel like I'm experiencing it for myself, and not just someone on a self discovery journey or whatever. They implemented a really cool matchbook/burning element to it where you can light and throw your infinite supply of matches to better see dark areas and also to burn things in the environment, sometimes leading to new passageways and lore and other times just to remove things. It looks GREAT when you see things engulfed in the flames and kind of reminds me a little bit like a cousin to Little Inferno. They obviously spent a lot of time perfecting how that looks, and it's wonderful. Character models look great as well. The game runs at a solid 120fps at 4k resolution with everything maxed out for me on a 5080. I'm playing this on a 77in LG OLED with a pretty nice surround system and they really did a great job with the sound mixing which really, REALLY adds to the ambiance of the world. I'm sure if you played this with headphones you'd get a similar experience but in my setup it went a long way to actually making me feel like I am going on this journey. (The reason I mention the OLED is because of the way OLED screens handle black, which is basically infinite, so in a game like this where there is no color it makes a huge difference in immersion.) Final thought: I'd absolutely love it if this game had a VR mode, or a mod for that, because as good as it is with immersing you in the game, being able to see everything in VR would be next level.
