Firstly, this Game is absolutely a Walking Simulator with an interesting story wrapped around it. There are no jump scares, only an upsetting story that is pretty well told. No spoilers, but the basic premise is that a female psychiatric patient returns to the asylum to basically "remember" what happened. The game moves quite slow with unskippable cutscenes, but a good bit of interactable objects. Basically everything is scripted, the puzzles aren't hard, and the few collectibles make this game a very chill experience with a depressing story. It's a decent game with a little bit of player choice across the short 2 hour playthrough and I was able to get all of the achievements in just over 3 hours. If it wasn't such a sad/upsetting story then I think it would have more mass appeal. TL;DR - 5.5/10 - Very Competent Story Telling, but Too Slow and Too Sad for me.
I have never been this terrified by a game without a single jump scare :/ You can immediately tell when a game is made with love. After beating it, you just sit there for a long time, thinking about the massive amount of work that devs put into it. The story. The game is set back in the 2016, showing the events of 1930s. Specifically, you walk through a ruined asylum, piecing together memories from that era. And the atmosphere is incredibly heavy, especially considering the game is based on true events. Visuals. Visually, everything looks absolutely stunning. Plus, the optimization is solid, the FPS stayed stable and high even on ultra settings. +Huge respect to the level designer for the object placement, the subtle light cues, and the detailed maps. It was almost always clear what to do and where to go, except for a couple of moments due to the localization. Gameplay. However, this is where it leaves a rather bitter aftertaste, unfortunately. The catch is that for 80% of the game, you're just walking somewhere. Fetching an item on the other side of the map and carrying it all the way back? Oh yeah, the game will easily make you waste 30 minutes on that. It would be amazing if there was a sprint button, at least for the moments when you have to cover some serious distance. Final verdict. Overall, it’s a deeply profound game that really makes you think. Very few games are capable of leaving such a powerful impression after a playthrough. You constantly empathize with the protagonist, and your inside literally boils with rage at how unfair the world can be. I highly recommend everyone to play it through, or at least watch a playthrough video and take something away from it. This has got to be one of the heaviest, if not the absolute most devastating game I have ever played. The game vividly bequeaths you to a time and place void of hope, whence there is no return. If you truly immerse yourself in it, the story touches the deepest recesses of your consciousness. It took me the whole game to realize that you are actually playing as the wraith of someone who was once trapped within the asylum walls. This game is not for everyone, but it is an incredibly profound and unique masterpiece
It was just... wow The Town of Light is a game about a person truly breaking down. It doesn't scare you with jump scares; it makes you feel incredibly uncomfortable. And I don't think it's a negative that there's no running in the game, because that's exactly what they want you to do – soak up the atmosphere. Playing as the main character and experiencing her memories of sexual abuse, trauma, vulnerability, and loneliness just forces you to process it all without any explanation or hope that the person can get out of it. What am I even talking about? The lobotomy scene made me want to puke and cry at the same time, lol. And the whole ending was so affecting and shocking that I simply didn't know what to feel. This is the game that gave me such shocking things and then left me with them. What's especially frightening is the fact that the game is based on real events and practices in Italian mental hospitals before the 1978 reform, which further immerses you in this feeling of hopelessness. The themes in this game may resonate differently with different people, but the game doesn't ask for anything in return, it only leaves you in thought and confusion. I'm amazed.
