Aside from the cute and funny aspects, the game is actually really fun. It needs to be optimized though, like, it should be priority number 1.

Onirism is a crazy mix of Serious Sam (2), GoldenEye/Perfect Dark, Unreal Tournament, a dash of Doom and Quake, collection platformers (without being a collectathon) and various other late 90s/early 2000s games that comes out managing to be its own game, instead of a spiritual successor, despite not hiding its inspirations. The shooting and movement are very solid and smooth, fast paced, experiences. The many dozens of weapons nearly all feel unique instead of being upgrades. On the second highest difficulty, the level of challenge generally feels just right. Plenty of content already. Getting to nearly all the current version’s contents (all hand-made, none of it feels like filler) took me 58 hours (some spent in the arcade mode), and I suspect I could get most of the non-shop stuff I’m missing in a few more. Well worth your 10/20 bucks. Dev team is active, updates are relatively frequent, and the full release is in sight, so I doubt this will be Massive Chaliced. As a final note, I’m sure someone will see the heroine and ask what kind of age rating it is. I think it’s solidly in “T” territory than an “E” or “E10” (but certainly isn’t an “M”). There’s things I don’t think would ever fly in a E10 game, but it’s hardly a lewd or gory game. This includes things like the face on the health meter growing visible bruises, bumps and red cuts as health decreases, some enemies have the bodies of adult women (fire spirit, bee women etc.) and dress provocatively, zombie enemies have bone protruding from their decaying bodies, and the dialog has minor profanity (“hell”) on occasion

It is insane to me how little known this hidden gem is, given the popularity of retro throwback games nowadays you'd think Onirism would be more popular, but so few people seem to even know of its existence that I don't think I've ever seen or heard anyone even mentioning it before I started playing it. So obviously you must be wondering what this game is. Best answer I can give is a unique mix of Ratchet and Clank third-person platforming and early 2000s shooters like Serious Sam and Unreal Tournament. I know it sounds weird, but trust me it works really well for the most part. To get this out of the way, the story and writing in this game are minimal, they barely exist and are just an excuse for player motivation, the real meat and bones of this game is the gameplay. It's very much in line with Ratchet and Clank and other platforming games from that era; running and gunning with lots of jumping, collectables scatttered around the maps and the occasional melee brawl, except every now and again the game takes a turn to very open maps with an emphasis on hordes of enemies and lots of shooting. Sometimes it throws you into small arenas with lots of verticality, weapons and ammo pickups. See what I've meant at the start? It's a very strange mix of ideas, but the running and gunning in this game is really good, you have lots of mobility and it translates really well into the platforming, not to mention there are many (literally dozens) of guns, some of which are lifted from either Serious Sam or Unreal Tournament, even the Flak Cannon and the Eightball Gun are in this game, the same applies to many enemies archetypes as well. There's a large variety of environments and enemies, the maps are big (sometimes unnecessarily big if you ask me) and there are even different arena modes, deathmatch and co-op. If it isn't obvious already, despite being in Early Access the game has a lot of content and I'd say that for the amount already present it's well worth the entry price for that alone. The ugly part is the game has this unfinished feel throughout the experience, it's expected as it's an Early Access tile, but you can find development videos on Youtube dating development back to at least 2016, so it's clear this game has been through a lot of reworks and continues to. Some of the issues are sections lacking voice acting, the GUI could be better (especially in shops), very little visual guidance for the player so it's easy to get lost in bigger levels, bad performance and there are bugs. Lots of them. And I don't know if this is purely a level design issue or not, but some levels are just more well put together than others, whether they're unfinished or they're older and need a rework I can't tell. Overall it has this very obvious jank you can't escape. With that said, I still really like this game despite its unfinished nature, it really feels like one the games I would've played during my early teens, not to mention the devs are active (if albeit slow) and continuously working on it. The game is fun, packed with references to old games and there are many of hours of fun to be had if you can get past the jank. I think it's criminally underrated and truly deserves more attention, why it isn't getting that attention is beyond me. And before I forget, Carol is super cute. 😭

Cute and funny hidden gem reminiscent of PS2 action games from back in the day like Legend of Spyro (not pejorative), Rayman, Jak and Daxter, etc. Edit: Arcade mode is essentially a COD Zombie mode. Turn on FPS mode and enjoy better COD because Carol is in this one

I bought this some years ago on the recommendation of a friend who has since passed away. I saw it in my library the other day and decided to load it up, expecting something mediocre given that the game's been in "Early Access" for years now. I was completely mistaken. Onirism is an extremely charming third-person action game that blurs the line between action platformer and third-person shooter. It has both shooting and melee combat (with dodging and blocking) with impressive movement tech and a ridiculous amount of toy guns. That's right, toy guns: this is a G-rated title, through and through. Despite perverted memes from some of the community members, there is no nudity or adult content anywhere in this game, so if you're here for that, you'd better look elsewhere. This is 100% cute and comical monster-blasting action using a wide variety of silly weapons, like water guns, foam dart launchers, exploding fruit, and even a pencil launcher. Actually there are at least two dozen guns in the game, and probably more. There are sub-weapons (a la Castlevania), there are gun variants with altered stats and unique capabilities (like scoped/unscoped, for example), and there are even vehicles to ride. A lot of the charm of this game is in the main character, Carol. A young French girl who has had her beloved stuffed rabbit "Bunbun" stolen from her by a mysterious entity that came through a dark portal, she fearlessly charges through the portal to rescue her favorite plush toy. Carol's personality throughout the game is direct and no-nonsense in only the way that a hyperconfident child can be, and the dialogue is very often quite funny. Overall, I feel ashamed to have let this one linger in my library so long, and it's ridiculous that it's only $18 considering the amount of content here. The game supports local co-op with up to 4 players, and it works well over Steam Remote Play Together, so grab a copy and play it with your friends. It's a blast! (Little tip for getting Steam Remote Play to cooperate: we couldn't get Remote Play to reliably assign controller slots in a convenient way, so what we did was assign the keyboard/mouse to the last player in the game's controls. It'll make sense once you're trying to get it working.)
