Outlast 2 is a part of my backlog so there is no question I am extremely late with my review, (June 2026 to be exact) but nevertheless I have completed the game and prepared to present my thoughts. The first thing anyone will notice is it is overwhelmingly dark. The camcorder is a carry over from the original title but the Devs of Outlast 2 do not want you to make any progress without it! You literally can't see anything without night vision and there is now a recording feature that further encourages you to have the camcorder on at all times. Like many horror games before it Outlast 2 see's you trapped in a small town of murderous hillbillies, occultists, psycho's and the diseased. No it's not pleasant at all and with no means to defend yourself your only options are to run, hide, and stealth. Emphasis on run because that literally is the only way to survive; if you hide they will find you, if you sneak they will hear you, if you stand they will see you. So throw caution to the wind and run which frustratingly only works if you find the exact path of escape. One wrong turn and it's instant death aka Alien Isolation. The game is split between two storylines, one mental and one physical. Overall I preferred the mental storyline that takes place in a school dreamscape. Events in the school are less direct and in your face than the dark night with the town crazies. Outlast 2 is a different type of game than the original, it's longer and a bit more difficult. In my opinion it has more in common with Silent Hill or The Evil Within series than the original Outlast. There are some original game tie ins but you have to search far and wide to find them. Overall, Outlast 2 is not a game I would play twice, it can't be described as fun, it's just unpleasant, unholy, and deals with criminal and taboo subject matter. The graphics, sounds, voice acting, and music are well done, characters are fully developed, and several moments are well executed but I'm quite happy to uninstall and leave this town. I would only recommend Outlast 2 to gluttens for punishment and/or hardcore survival horror enthusiats.

The first time I played this game, I couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks afterwards. I actually felt a bit traumatised. Not because this is by far the most gruesome game I have ever played (which it is), but because it contains themes that are difficult to digest like child abuse and child suicide. To me, this is far more disturbing than any of the visceral content of the game. Needless to say, this is not a game for everyone, but then if you are playing this because you want to be scared out of your wits (and seriously, what other reason would you have to play this game?), prepare to be very satisfied. The level design is a little bit less intuitive than Outlast, so if you stumble around, not entirely sure where to go next, prepare to die. A lot. As a result, the fear aspect of the game suffers a bit, because the point in being scared is really in trying to AVOID death, rather than actually dying until it becomes trial and error. However, maybe that's just me. Doubtless other gamers will navigate the game far better than I did. Like its predecessor, Outlast 2 gives the player no weapons and the only way to avoid danger is to run and hide. A formula that continues to work brilliantly and terrifyingly. All in all, I love this game. If you've got a strong stomach, you might too.
