Panelka is a small but heartfelt creative sandbox that combines interior design with a distinctly Eastern-European sense of nostalgia. Developed and published by MonsterAttack, it invites players into a world of cramped apartments, faded wallpapers, and retro furnishings that define the lived-in atmosphere of Soviet-era housing blocks. Rather than focusing on objectives, management systems, or progression, the game leans entirely into the quiet pleasure of decorating and personalizing a space that feels intimate, familiar, and rooted in collective memory. Panelka is not concerned with simulation accuracy or elaborate mechanics; instead, it is built around the emotional resonance of recreating homes that many players grew up in or recognize from their cultural surroundings. Upon starting, you choose from several classic apartment layouts — narrow corridors, small kitchens, rectangular living rooms, modest bedrooms — each modeled after the iconic panel buildings that dominated late Soviet and early post-Soviet cityscapes. These layouts are intentionally modest, almost plain, but that understated foundation becomes the perfect blank canvas for decoration. The game offers a wide array of furniture and decor items that reflect real-world designs of the era: heavy wooden cabinets, patterned carpets, bulky CRT televisions, fold-out sofas, old refrigerators, worn wardrobes, and wallpaper prints that instantly evoke a specific time and place. Every item can be rotated, placed freely, and combined without strict grid-locking, giving you an organic sense of control that mirrors the improvisational decorating style of actual panel apartments. What makes Panelka especially memorable is the atmosphere it creates through its art style and presentation. The textures often feel slightly aged, echoing the worn surfaces of real apartments that have been lived in for decades. Lighting is soft and subdued, giving each room a quiet, evening warmth. The choices of color — browns, beiges, greens, and deep reds — contribute to a nostalgic mood that feels authentic rather than manufactured. Whether you’re laying down a floral carpet, hanging up an old poster, or arranging trinkets on a shelf, everything contributes to the emotional impression that this is a place with history. The game doesn’t force narrative onto the player, but the environment itself tells a story: of childhood, of family gatherings, of old radios humming in kitchens, of everyday life frozen in time. The lack of traditional gameplay structure becomes part of the charm. Panelka has no tasks to complete, no storyline to follow, and no pressure to optimize. You decorate because you want to, not because the game demands it. This turn inward — toward creativity, memory, and mood — makes the experience deeply personal. Some players recreate their childhood homes; others design imagined spaces inspired by the era; some simply enjoy placing items until their apartment feels cozy. The available furnishings are varied enough to support different styles, whether you want a cluttered family living room, a sterile bachelor apartment, or an artist’s hideaway filled with mismatched furniture. Despite its strengths, Panelka does come with limitations that stem from its small scale. It is not a full interior-design simulator with advanced tools, physics, or construction options. Its space selection is limited, and while the item catalog is generous for a niche indie title, it cannot match the depth of larger building games. The visual quality, while atmospheric, is intentionally rough around the edges—those looking for pristine graphics or modern design elements may find it simplistic. Yet for many players, these limitations are part of the appeal. The imperfections replicate the feeling of old apartments that were assembled piece by piece, often with mismatched furniture and improvised layouts. Ultimately, Panelka succeeds because it knows exactly what kind of experience it wants to offer. It is a cozy, meditative tool for creativity, driven by cultural memory rather than mechanical ambition. It caters to players who find comfort in slow, intentional decorating, who appreciate the quiet beauty of everyday spaces, and who enjoy games that create emotional resonance through atmosphere rather than storytelling. For anyone with ties to the architecture and culture it represents, Panelka can feel almost therapeutic — a small, warm, digital home where you can rearrange your thoughts alongside your furniture. Pros: -Easy to get used to mechanics -You can interact with shelves and cabinets and place stuff inside them -Beautiful visuals and lighting -You can choose animals Cons: -English version has incorrect translations -Categories in the english version are in russian, the objects themselves are in english -A bit buggy interacting with doors -Some wall, floor and clothing visual bugs, clipping -A bit hard to tell where the wallpaper will apply -Loading into a saved game spawns default objects In my opinion, the cons aren't enough to deter me from enjoying the game, it still needs some improvement. In the future, I hope to see more variety in decor, pets, posters, stickers as the updates come. A must buy if you like the aesthetic and decorating games, and don't mind waiting for updates.
