I don't think PEAK is just a game about climbing a mountain. Somehow, it's become one of the nicest places I've ever spent time in. Yes, you can play it with your friends. You can scream when someone falls, and laugh at a friend slipping on a banana. But somewhere between all of that, you start talking about your day, about life, about things you probably wouldn't have brought up if you were just sitting in a Discord call with nothing to do. PEAK gives you something to do while you're spending time with the people you care about. And I think that's what makes it so special. And somehow, it's just as lovely alone, when your friends aren't around, PEAK doesn't suddenly become an empty experience. There's something strangely peaceful about climbing by yourself. It's you, the mountain, and the quiet determination to see how far you can make it. The game is challenging, but it also has this warmth to it that I genuinely can't explain. I've played plenty of games that are fun. I've played games with better graphics, bigger worlds, and more things to do. But I don't think I've ever experienced a game quite like PEAK. I genuinely think that's what makes this game so lovely. It's the feeling that, for a little while, you're exactly where you want to be. I've never been able to experience a game quite like this before. 10/10. Absolutely PEAK.
I know a friendslop when I see one. A game subgenre where the lack of strong core mechanics and gameplay loops are replaced with incentives to get a reaction out of you with the cheapest possible tricks on the basis of your friends, not the game. This, is not a friendslop. This game took a lot of beating at first by being the headliner for the friendslop subgenre but the consistent fanbase proved otherwise. First of all, the game is extremely well made and well thought out. Everything feels intentional and none of them is frustrating, the gameplay loop is interesting, challenging, and full of variety and surprises. The world gen is really the cornerstone for this variety in gameplay and with each biome comes different challenges you must face. Other than that, its extremely rewarding and keeps you determined through all those challenges to reach the top to see the tail of that campfire smoke. Other than that, the gameplay mechanics like the stamina bar getting replaced with various debuffs is very interesting and fun. I think that part of the survival gimmick is what makes the game so interesting in the first place, and the way that survival mechanic is neatly bound to everything that happens in the world around you is really complemental because it makes you feel more connected and inside the biome. Obviously its way more fun with friends, obviously its way more unforgettable with friends. But that doesn't make it a friendslop. Not every coop game is friendslop and this game is a good anectode for all lazy friendslop developers out there trying to make a quick buck out of your 5 second reactions with simple gimmicks.
Having just summited my 100th Peak, now finally feels like the right time to leave a review for this incredible game. I bought this originally with the intent of just adding it to my friendslop pile for a few hours of silly co-op, but it only took a few runs for me to quickly realise how much care went into the design of this game. It's had me tearing my hair out in frustration, sweating, and heart pounding so many times (and I'm a big Souls fan so that's saying something). I've enjoyed co-op but I'd say about 80% of my peaks were solo and not a single moment was dull or felt lonely - the beautiful soundtrack and biome designs have you fully immersed throughout your journey. I've been playing since the original biome setup and have thoroughly enjoyed the additions and can't wait to see the teased biome that is yet to come. You'd think after 100 Peaks (and that's not counting my many failed attempts) this game would start to feel a bit stale but the new map seeds every 24hrs and biome rotations keep things feeling fresh and exciting and importantly, offer a new challenge each time giving unlimited replayability! As someone restricted to the house for most of my time due to immunosuppressants, I can honestly say that Peak has given me something fun and meaningful to look forward to and achieve each day after I log off remote work. On reflection, it's obscene that this game only cost me six quid - needless to say I've gotten more than my money's worth and I know I'll get many more hours out of this game :)
I bought this game mainly because my friends kept insisting, just to have something fun, casual, and not too serious to play together. Honestly, it does this job really well. The variety of levels, frequent updates, and different routes keep the gameplay fresh. Its simple yet engaging design makes it an easy choice whenever someone suggests playing it — everyone agrees. Overall, it’s a great game and I definitely recommend it.
