April 2025
Over the last 40 hours, this has become possibly my favorite game of all time. Ever. Never before has the narrative themes of a game been so immaculately woven throughout the text, the characters, heck, even the title and the save system. Pentiment comes from the Italian "pentimenti," which is when a paint is chipped or peeled away in a painting to reveal earlier, older layers of paint. The game is a story of anachronisms, people holding on desperately to the past, refusing to let the future progress; whether it's a monastic scriptorium trying to ply their trade in the advent of the proliferation of the movable type printing press, Catholic priests holding firm that this new-fangled Lutheranism is simply a fad, lieged lords unable to accept that the peasantry may require more agency than they've ever had, or various members of a small Alpine village refusing to let the secrets of the town's history be unveiled, the game is absolutely brimming with incredible story beats that all tie back to the themes of the game as a whole. Additionally, the game is absolutely devoted to a *true* representation of history. To an untrained eye, the cast of characters may seem strangely diverse for early 16th-century Bavaria, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Between the excellent depiction of sexuality among the clergy, the Ethiopian itinerant priest in Act 1, or the Jewish couple fleeing mandatory expulsion acts in Act 2, the game portrays the world as it truly was, with a end-credits bibliography to prove it. There are holy men who deign to hold true the Scriptures they preach, and others whose devotion to their faith is so pure and true they voluntarily make their lives harder to live the truth the Lord they believe in has prescribed for them. It has some of the best depictions of religious charlatans and genuinely faithful piety I've ever seen in a work of fiction, and the way the game juxtaposes them is simply spectacular. This is a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Please, please give it a try.

A game about people, the flow of time, God, and the relationships between the three; Pentiment is a beautiful game both in it's visual design and as a story to be told. It is not an experience everyone will enjoy, and someone who is disinterested by a game that some might describe as an interactive novel will likely not find this game holds their attention. In my opinion however, it stands tall among other contemporaries in it's genre like Disco Elysium as a testament to the fact that video-games can move us, shape our minds, and leave us changed for the better as much as any literary classic or renaissance painting. In short, it was a pleasure to play this game.

Pentiment is that kind of game where the phrase "Medieval Europe + monks + murder" hooks you, and you can't quite figure out why it sounds so cool. But Obsidian managed to turn this into not just a historical tour but an actual interactive novel. You play as Andreas Maler, an artist who gets caught up in a murder investigation at a monastery. The story feels like your favorite TV series — it’s gripping, and the choices make you question your own morality. The art style resembles old manuscripts, and the animation is minimalistic, but that’s the charm — it feels like you’re living inside a book. Although, at times, you’ll wish for a medieval mouse to fast-forward through some dialogues. This game could really use a skip the boring monk button. The humor is subtle, sometimes so much so that you only realize they were joking after the fact. For instance, one character might delve into deep philosophy and then casually ask who stole the cheese. It’s like if Socrates moonlit as a fridge guard. Pentiment isn’t for those looking for action or drama around every corner. But if you want to immerse yourself in an era where even the choice of font matters and discover that medieval bureaucracy was just as terrifying as dragons, this game is for you.

It's gorgeous. It's engaging. It's well written, yes. Pentiment is oozing with life, but, more than anything, this earnest, curious game has achieved that which I think is so difficult in narrative games like this -- a sense of being "encompassing". It's understanding of early Christianity, of early Europe and it's customs, of the nature of people and the stories and art pieces which pull them through hardship combine in such a seamless, thoughtful way. All these elements can be a bit much, almost -- but the way that they are so seamlessly introduced without becoming too annoying or unexpected make the reading experience a dream. And the characters! The game's understanding that history is as much about people as it is about the stories we tell about them gives it a depth I've rarely seen done so well. There are so many difficult questions posed by Pentiment -- and the sensitivity in which it's characters and I approached them made me realize that we are much closer to that thing we often compartmentalize as "history" than I thought. If there's anything I've come away from this game with, it's that sense of connection with the past. To think that there were people (okay video game characters sure) at a time so far removed who thought like us, were capable of having the kinds of lives and thoughts that we do, expanded my perspective. History is as much now as it is then. Like the people of Tassing, we will one day be remembered only through pictures and things. How our own story as a "modern people" has become much more prescient in my day to day life. (How that plays in too with the player's limited interaction with the story is also very well thought out, ludonarratively.) I would be more specific, but I refuse to spoil anything. It's been a long while since I've played a game with such a thorough vision, which so thoroughly created what can only be described as magic. Wonderful, wonderful game!

"Be a medieval artist," they said. "See the funny margin doodles," they said. I was NOT PREPARED for the emotional and intellectual sucker punch this game inflicted on me. It had deep conversations on art, life, loss, self-fulfilment, religion, language, culture, society, and more - but they were all weaved beautifully through the game, and never felt preachy or cumbersome. I truly felt that I was making meaningful choices in the game, while also coming to meaningful decisions in my own views on the world. I can't think of many other games that made me think so deeply - or cry so often. In terms of execution, the choices made by the team are just perfect. The art of the world and characters aptly evokes the styles of medieval books and murals, and even in its simplicity has just enough personality and animation to make the characters unique and come to life. The typography design - my goodness, how clever; using captions - a necessary UI element that is usually taken for granted - to say something about the people speaking them and about the world they live in, is just a stroke of genius. The sound design that accompanies those captions is also wonderful, as are the few poignant pieces of music that accompany some powerful scenes. And all of this is built on a foundation of a really interesting plot, that had me hooked, gasping, agonising at choices, and eventually satisfied, if emotional. I would say that most of Act 3 felt a little drawn out and out of pace with the rest of the game, but it was absolutely worth powering through to get the full experience. As a professional illustrator I related to so many bits in the game, and felt so seen (and occasionally personally attacked), so I deeply recommend this game to anyone who considers themselves an artist. But also to anyone who doesn't mind a lot of reading or being an emotional wreck for a few days. I think the payoff is more than worth it.
