This is one of the most enjoyable mystery games I've played by far. From start to finish, the game had my hooked. The characters, story, music and visuals were all stand-outs and will stay with me for a long, long time. Story I found the story to be utterly compelling. Everything felt grounded in history but with a little bit of anachronistic levity to keep things enjoyable and far less oppressive. As an avid mystery fan, I was thrilled by the stories of each chapter as well as the overall narrative. Featuring locations rich with detail that don't get used often in murder mysteries, or with premises that feel familiar but with a new twist, this game really impressed and entertained me. It was genuinely fun piecing together facts, figuring out the truth and confronting the culprits. I cannot overstate how much I love the pacing and storytelling during each of these chapters. All the clues that point the finger at the killer are there, buried delightfully. Key facts get discovered and suspects are checked off one-by-one until only the culprit remains at a perfect pace. Chapter 3 is a highlight for me and looking back at all the little clues still gives me joy. It was seriously great. Being able to follow the story, predict where it's going, wrongly predict where it's going, watch the pieces click into place... it's just perfect. Characters This was a major, major highlight for me. It was packed wall-to-wall with bright, dynamic characters who all seemed to have their own lives. No one existed just to be antagonistic or a mouthpiece for a talking point. Foolish characters were allowed to be clever and cunning characters make blunders. You are often presented with a character who embodies an archetype that is instantly familiar to you but then they do something that surprises, charms or delights you. I didn't really think any character was wasted, I wanted to see them again! Children acted like children, scholars like scholars and workers like workers. One other thing I'd like to mention is how all the deceased characters felt respected, missed or remembered. Too many stories deal with a big murder plot then swipe all the affected characters away to start a new murder plot somewhere else. The characters in this world: living, dead, accused, all had a place and a life, and the absence or change in circumstances is felt by other characters. Shen is a wildly enjoyable protagonist. Level-headed, introspective, clever, and determined. It can be very tiring to deal with protagonists who give up, flounder or panic whenever the odds are against them but Shen surprised me by being so cool and never really giving in, even when he was clearly under pressure. The way he treats others and keeps his wits, even when under fire or being accused, is really great to watch. Gameplay The mechanics were simple and not at all demanding. It would have been nice if there were more puzzles but I'm pretty spoiled in that regard, so it's not a big deal. One of the things I must admire is that there was a different mechanic introduced for each chapter, dealing with testimony, deduction or confrontation. That was really nice to see and helped each chapter feel distinct (even if Chapter 1 and 2 are pretty much linked together). It is actually amazing to see how much someone can do with just dialogue options or mixing and matching evidence. This is a BIG, BIG, BIG point here. In a bunch of mystery games, you get lost in the weeds. It happens. One too many "you saw it, right? A contradiction" or "something he said goes against *this* piece of evidence..!" can make you go a little loopy and beg the game to just be clear. It happened in this game, it's happened in other games, it'll happen again. What I must sing the praises of to the HIGHEST of the HIGH heavens is the Hint system in this game. When I first clicked on the hint button, it was with shame and defeat... but, it did something that made life easier. The hint menu gives you an actual hint. If you get lost in the vague "this contradicts that" dialogue, the hint option will ask the question plainly "if so-and-so was truly where he said he was, he would have some known about something else" kind of thing. From there, if you're still stuck, you can just get the answer but the hint menu itself just gives you a little nudge. It saved my brain a few times where I was completely lost. Because of this hint system, I was never really stuck for long AND the hint menu actually gave me some "aha" moments that helped bring cases together. The game is loaded with historical entries and real-world facts that really bring the game to life. It's nice to see a mystery game include a codex and I wish more games did. Final Words I played this game with my sisters for a few hours at a time over the last few days. I stayed up until 5am yesterday because I couldn't stop playing Chapter 6. We were able to build theories together, solve puzzles together, laugh together, wince together, and now we suffer Good Story Withdrawal together. I deeply appreciate the game, the people behind it and especially loved that they linked a bunch of inspirations that I really wish I could check out but... outside of Ace Attorney and Kindaichi, I cannot just yet. This game is excellent on its own merits and I can't wait to see what's next!
Murders on the Yangtze River is a nice detecetive game I played. It is a tribute to the Agatha Christie book Murders on the Orient Express. Game has a lot going for it. Setting is in 1910 or 1907 in China. A super nice setting where it seems China was on the cusp of change and on the verge of drastic change. Gameplay design was good. The individual puzzles feel intuitive and quite straightforward to solve; also felt interesting. While everything is in the room to find, the clues are never far from the area to collect, so it is a matter of finding them all, putting them all together, and then solving them. When the clues are found, they are presente din a notebook tha is used to think and piut things together. All fo which is presented well togfether in a cohesive manner. So everything is good. Those clues re well done and put together so yeah. The confrontations in the game between characters are quite interesting, and dramatic. Rationale and conversation feel natural, and well written, so dialogue is fine. The court case in game is quite interesting. Just to progress, means I have to listen to every point and just figure out which one is the weakness and point it out. That is the entire purpose of a detective. Music is a great asset in game. The theme song is a serene eloquence in composition is quite nice. It entices me to want to embark on a nice river cruise. Not just the theme music is great, but the ingame music is great too. Quite a nice thing to have while playing the game. Nice enough that it fits the mood, but variety enough the game that it does not feel repetitive. It does feel dramatic and energetic for the case, and it feels like it repeats too often. Oh well. I have my own favourite case and it is Number 4, by way of being most complex. It has a few more moving parts, and the person is not motivated by greed but revenge. Detective Shen and everyone else are inspired to keep the events a secret and cover it up. Its emotional impact, personal cause, and justice makes it a very deep and intricate case that I liked. So now it is my favourite story of them all. I do appreciate he fact that we visit the hometown of the detective himself. He visits and we get to see him want to do stuff. The voice acting is probably the a great strength as the effort is done with care. Each person has its own voice and seemingly had its own actor, with no crossover. When the credits rolled, I checked the names and I was stunned at the names. Some actors portrayed several characters, and obviously had range, so I was happy about it. They even got the accent right for those who seemingly speak it as a second language. They do have talent and deserve great and lengthy career. I would love to hear them in new games. The interconnected yet complex nature of the cases is the greatest asset the game has in its possession. Each of the 6 cases are connected, with each other, with ties to each other, hints, and clues, and are interconnected. It would seem there is a grand scheme going on and yet they seem unrelated. However, it is in universe so they are connected somewhat. Like from Case 1 to 2, we already see it is part of a larger case, but subdivided or so in two separate cases, that are causation and effect. That was basically into different events presented as one. That is cool. The extra expansion pack (Case 6) is a complex and intriguing case that adds a load of depth, personal pain, and weaves in lots of strings we see in the 5 prior cases. I appreciate the extended content and far more interesting than the other cases. The case took a year to produce, and release in the game; it was worth it. Also, there is another free expansion pack. Now to answer the question, are there anything that could be better? I could think of only one thing. The one horror scene in game is pretty grotesque, and could be removed. A few words before I continue. The achievements to the game, are nice. Some are easily missed so I guess it has to be done better, instead of requiring a second play through. I can thank people for writing guides so it is easier. The writing system is interesting. It uses the Wade-Giles romanization system, which was developed in the 19th-century, so it is accurate to use this system. The other system pinyin was invented a century later. It is obvious when reading the various names, as Chun, Tung, and Chan. So damn good. The influx of Chinese games is a great boon. With recent games that are released, is a great thing. Some of the best games came out and this is no exception. This came out in early 2024, and was a great game that can be a pre-cursor in game and I love it. Recommendation: yes. Score: 100%.
Holy hell this is the first video game I've played that's given me the same feeling after finishing it as I get after finishing a really good novel. That feeling where I'm satisfied but also not because I just want to stay in this world with these characters for as long as I can. All of the main cast were so carefully crafted, and everything in the story slowly builds up to the big realisation. Even having the background knowledge that I do regarding the main historical problems discussed in the game, I never could have imagined exactly how the crux of this would go. I want to learn more about these characters and what happened to them afterwards. I loved all the twists and turns and false leads, but also the way that everything has some connection that leads you to the final big reveal. I had so much fun playing this game and I'm definitely going to replay it to see all the foreshadowing I missed and to get the rest of the achievements. The money I spent on this game might be the best money I've spent on Steam so far. This was awesome. I adored this game. I highly recommend it to anyone who sees this review. I can't decide who has the better line - Ting Xiang's "All my bosses end up like this." or Joseph's "I'm a f*ing prosecutor." They were both so awesome! Obsessing over this game.
This is, quite simply, an absolute A-star game that will draw you in with its gorgeous visuals, well crafted complex characters, and enthralling plots (and plot twists), plus I really like the extra side of multiple historical snippets that you collect throughout the game. If you ever enjoyed Pentiment (the Renaissance "Name of the Rose" murder mystery) but wanted something set in the far east, this is your game; trust me. My only complaint is that it is not longer, not because it is a short game but because I did not want it to end. Oh and if you are worried about its specs, I'm playing it on a 2019 macbook pro using parallels to VM windows 10 and it runs with no problems whatsoever.
Although the English translation contains numerous small errors and awkward phrasings, the core of the game remains mostly understandable. There is one chapter, happening after the main story that is still untranslated. I liked the puzzles, characters and historical background provided. The music, which was clearly paying homage to Ace Attorney series, was also excellent. I hope the devs keep making detective games, I'd love to play more of this.
