Holy hell this is the first video game I've played that's given me the same feeling after finishing it as I get after finishing a really good novel. That feeling where I'm satisfied but also not because I just want to stay in this world with these characters for as long as I can. All of the main cast were so carefully crafted, and everything in the story slowly builds up to the big realisation. Even having the background knowledge that I do regarding the main historical problems discussed in the game, I never could have imagined exactly how the crux of this would go. I want to learn more about these characters and what happened to them afterwards. I loved all the twists and turns and false leads, but also the way that everything has some connection that leads you to the final big reveal. I had so much fun playing this game and I'm definitely going to replay it to see all the foreshadowing I missed and to get the rest of the achievements. The money I spent on this game might be the best money I've spent on Steam so far. This was awesome. I adored this game. I highly recommend it to anyone who sees this review. I can't decide who has the better line - Ting Xiang's "All my bosses end up like this." or Joseph's "I'm a f*ing prosecutor." They were both so awesome! Obsessing over this game.

This is, quite simply, an absolute A-star game that will draw you in with its gorgeous visuals, well crafted complex characters, and enthralling plots (and plot twists), plus I really like the extra side of multiple historical snippets that you collect throughout the game. If you ever enjoyed Pentiment (the Renaissance "Name of the Rose" murder mystery) but wanted something set in the far east, this is your game; trust me. My only complaint is that it is not longer, not because it is a short game but because I did not want it to end. Oh and if you are worried about its specs, I'm playing it on a 2019 macbook pro using parallels to VM windows 10 and it runs with no problems whatsoever.

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 223: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (10/10) This game is everything I want from a mystery adventure. Set in early-1900s China, it blends courtroom drama with scenic exploration, deep cultural context, and a love letter to the detective genre. I binge-played it in one sitting, and each case built on the last—until that final, brutal finale that nearly broke me. It’s inspired by Ace Attorney , of course, but it perhaps surpasses AA in cultural depth, narrative pacing, and emotional weight. 🏮 Pros: [*] Masterfully structured mystery arcs. Each of the interconnected cases is self-contained yet clearly builds toward the emotional core of the story. The pace tightens as you go—from clever locked-room puzzles to morally complex courtroom-esque showdowns. The writing is airtight, with clues woven elegantly into dialogue and evidence. No filler, just purposeful mystery progression. [*] Cultural immersion that deepens the narrative. Beyond murder puzzles, the game immerses you in early 20th-century Chinese legal customs, societal trauma from opium wars, and colonial tensions in Shanghai. Historical fact cards give you context without dragging down the plot. It's detective work and cultural exploration, a rare, welcome combo. [*] Visuals that blend elegance with storytelling. The game’s ink-wash, brush-style art makes it feel like walking through a living painting. The beauty contrasts perfectly with the darker, more realistic courtroom scenes, giving the whole game unique visual identity: stylized, but serious. [*] Engaging gameplay flow with varied mechanics. You move between collecting evidence, analyzing dialogue cues, presenting contradictions, and activating specialized minigames—mixing science-y liquids, re-enacting crime scenes, group interrogations. It keeps the detective experience fresh. [*] Expressive voice acting and atmospheric OST. Mostly Chinese voice acting with English subtitles adds authenticity. The music strikes a perfect note between tense drama and scenic reflection, elevating every courtroom moment into a cinematic experience. [*] You can skip the minigames! Good accessibility. ⚖️ Cons: [*] Final case is a serious brain-buster. The final mystery not only ties every previous plot thread together, but demands razor-sharp attention from you. The payoff was good, but man, was it hard. [*] Some puzzles lean into trial-and-error. A few deductions feel like wild guesses more than logical leaps—though the game’s retry system softens the blow, it can still be difficult. Although the English translation contains numerous small errors and awkward phrasings, the core of the game remains mostly understandable. There is one chapter, happening after the main story that is still untranslated. I liked the puzzles, characters and historical background provided. The music, which was clearly paying homage to Ace Attorney series, was also excellent. I hope the devs keep making detective games, I'd love to play more of this.

Despite some awkwardness in English localization, this is the best Ace Attorney inspired game I have played. The murder plots are clever with fun twists, along with some great QOL in the form of a hint system and speeding up dialogue.
