The game is not bad: we investigate cases, examine clues, and choose a conclusion. The outcome of the case depends on your attention. The downside is the controls. Watson constantly gets in the way. 👍

I successfully created a vorpX profile for Crimes & Punishments. It's likely that I'm the first man to experience this game in Full VR. A New Era in Frogwares' Sherlock Holmes Crimes & Punishments is the first Sherlock Holmes game that Frogwares built in Unreal Engine. That allowed me to use the UE3 profile in vorpX as the basis of a custom profile. I've done this many times by now and have had positive results. With this game, the stereo rendering is perfect... except for one issue that I worked very hard on, yet failed to fix. More on this later. Frogwares left their unknown engine behind and haven't looked back. Their first UE3 game looks outstanding, as it should since it was late in the engine's life. C&P released half a year after the launch of Unreal Engine 4. The increase in visual splendor is even greater than the increase of The Testament Of Sherlock Holmes (2012) over Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper (2009) or Nemesis Remastered (2010). I really enjoyed the modern visuals and high-quality character models/animations. Viewing all this in stereoscopic 3D with (almost) no graphical anomalies was a treat. 3rd person is the default way to control the game and that works just fine in vorpX with Immersive Screen Mode. But since the game also allows a first-person view—just as the past few games in the series—it was possible for me to create a Full VR perspective. I configured Edge Peek to serve as a screen, so I could easily switch to Edge Peek if I was playing 3rd person (or using menus, of course) and Full VR mode when I went first-person in-game. Casualized, Consolized Adventure Gaming With the game engine change also came a change in gameplay. For the first time since 2006's The Awakened, the fundamental game design has changed. I shared my fears in my review for The Testament Of... that Frogwares was streamlining and simplifying their Sherlock Holmes games to better appeal to modern mass audiences. Yes, that's exactly what they did with C&P. This is the easiest game yet. The scenarios mostly play out on their own. It felt like a visual novel at times. There are few puzzles, and I struggle to call this an adventure game. However, I was able to enjoy this streamlined design as a casual, relaxing gaming experience. None of the cases are difficult to progress through, since the game now has an objective tracker telling you what to do next. [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5lTMrBbZsg](Yay, modern gaming!) A couple of the cases had extremely obvious culprits, but the other four were decently interesting to figure out. The fifth case was complex, and I had a lot of fun with it. Rather than a single story as in previous games, C&P is a collection of separate cases. There's no throughline or overarching story, like L.A. Noire's case structure. The influence of L.A. Noire (2011) on the design of C&P is clear: the multiple cases, the interactive dialogues/interrogations. I also see Telltale influences, with the "Moral Choice" at the end of each case, where it will then tell you how many players chose the same option. That service no longer works in 2026. The servers were taken down—or maybe blown up by the Russians. Just as well, because I thought the moral choices were pointless. There's the obvious choice of making sure the murderer sees justice, or you can effectively repeat the terrible ending of Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper (2009) by lying to the police about the case. Nevertheless, I ended up seeing those bad moral choices and also incorrect endings. After a conclusion is reached, the game allows us to reset and choose other conclusions. I ended up getting the correct conclusion on my first try for all six cases, but I reloaded to see the amusing cutscenes of Holmes confronting the wrong person and saying with full confidence that he knows they are the murderer. 😂 Someone said in a Steam review that the third case could be anyone. No, there were enough clues and testimony to use your brain and figure it out. The finding of clues and evidence is streamlined into various systems for recording relevant information. It's a casual game and you don't have to do a lot of self-study like in previous games. This time, there aren't any 5-page documents to carefully read through. However, sometimes relevant information DOESN'T get archived into the Case Book. I reached 100% certainty of the murderer in that big 5th case because of an item that can be found, but is never recorded in the Case Book. My "AI"-Powered Shader Hacking Letdown I don't know how long it took me to complete the game in terms of straight gameplay. My playtime is massively inflated because of my attempts to fix the one stereoscopic anomaly that detracted from the 3D viewing experience: shadows rendered in 2D. This causes an eyesore, as shadows are cast on characters and objects in the game world incorrectly. I tried vorpX's shader authoring feature for the first time, taking me back to the days when I edited shaders for HelixMod fixes for the 3D Vision platform. I never got involved with difficult fixes, like with shadows, so I didn't know how to do it. My friend has been singing the praises of "AI" software to write code for him, and he'd given me a free week trial of Claude. I figured the "AI" may have been trained on shader programming and could help me create a fix for shadow rendering. After many, many hours of working on it, including trying Gemini, I failed to create a fix for shadows before I completed playing the game. At that point, I had to give up. vorpX's shader authoring feature was added 5+ years ago and never completed, so it may not have the functionality needed to fix shadows. HelixMod/3DMigoto have a robust set of tools for working with shaders. vorpX only has a few assembly macros. Future Plans The next four games Frogwares has made (I'm including The Sinking City (2019)/(2025) in this) are all built with Unreal Engine. The Devil's Daughter (2016) is also in Unreal Engine 3, so I'll try to play it with vorpX. The rest of the games are Unreal Engine 4 & 5, so UEVR will handle those nicely.

It's a crime scene investigation game similar to L.A Noire. However, in this game you're Sherlock Holmes. It's the kind of game that truly makes you use your brain in order to piece all the evidence together in order to make a good judgment.

Detective game that did not overstay its welcome. Divided into 6 cases. Word of warning, in the Kew Gardens case there is a particular clue that is described using the word 'proven' - you should substitute that word for 'suggests'.
