Want a Persona game that isn’t a JRPG? Want a quick spinoff after beating almost 100+ hour mainlines? Want to see P3’s SEES grown up and rebrand itself as Shadow Operatives? Or maybe see how P4’s Investigation Team spends their Golden Week holidays together? The Persona 4 Arena duology has those, but I’m way happier seeing the protagonists speak up like any other. In any case, as it crosses over, P3 has the plot devices, and P4 the setting. Sure, it can be fan service, but that’s an understatement of why this crossover matters when Arena and Ultimax introduces original characters. You’d expect this game to be purely about fighting each other but it isn’t. It can get tiring that the P4A story is repetitive and overlapping it feels like a chore for a glorified visual novel. Not saying it’s unenjoyable since it does its part narratively even if structured differently than Ultimax’s stories itself. Each character has their story to tell in the P-1 Grand Prix, even if it more or less repeats the same events of the Midnight Channel and a hijacking. Combat-wise, it’s decent but having to win over opponents in your own character story is contradictory. While its narration has differing perspectives, each character’s points of view can diverge to meme endings. Either way, It’s nice meeting Aigis’ long lost sister Labrys; she’s gone as far as larping as Yasogami’s student council president to embrace what it means to be human through the power of bonds, even if her shadow uniquely tries to disprove it all. But soon, outside the TV, Inaba’s midnight is also a major flashback now in the Dark Hour that now has its own Tartarus and the P-1 Climax. Individual perspectives overlap less here and with the ability to choose your fighter at some battles which keeps bonds as it should but without affecting the flow. How the teams converge or diverge looks way smoother as it ends with the same bloody boss fight whose health stats you don’t even get to see. This makes even more sense when most characters will have a shadow self that disappears when defeated - another trick of the mastermind that becomes increasingly obvious. Even Adachi has his own storyline and adds nuance separate from the Investigation Team, especially how he readily collaborates for his own reasons when he’s got nothing to lose. And yes, he fell to the same final boss multiple times, even on auto mode. It’s enigmatic that the split-personality Sho Minazuki, Ikutsuki’s begotten bastard (read: favorite guinea pig), struggles to understand bonds and can only imagine solitude with his deprivation. He’s really more pitiable than hateable knowing he never chose to be the 2-in-1 he ended up as. Ultimax’s story does what Arena didn’t and is pretty straightforward without the filler endings that I managed to 100% both eventually. Its reminiscent but canon continuity made me enjoy seeing the teams converge for a moment and end looking at a future for themselves with their bonds, especially the ex-SEES reunite and still being true to their mission as they were years ago. I may have hit the credits roll multiple times, but it’s just the beginning of playing P4AU exactly where it’s meant for: the battle mode; play it as I would in an arcade. I’ve just finished the visual novel aspect and I’m not really experienced with fighting games so is definitely something I can turn to when boredom hits hard or in between other games. Who knows when I’ve played all of them?
I am realizing SEGA rarely misses with these side games, this one has the cast of persona 3 and 4 in a tournament taking place in the shadow world. This is an arcade fighter with a persona 4 story that takes place after the main game. It is something special seeing the cast of 3 and 4 interacting with each other. Each character has its own story and character interactions along the way. Online community seems to still be active which is a plus. Good fighting game that is even better for persona fans!
