A turn based tactics game in which turns take 5 seconds, you have near-perfect knowledge of the enemy's intentions for the current turn, and you can plan your mech squad's actions down to the millisecond. This is a recipe for a BRILLIANT entry into the TBT genre, and the core of the tactical gameplay is indeed very good; combat is very tactical, mechs are highly customizable and there is an interesting multi-faceted heat mechanic that is great to experiment with. HOWEVER, every other aspect of the game ranges from mediocre to really bad. - The overworld is bland, with every region essentially being a big empty circular map with missions randomly scattered about. There is no grand strategy to plan or major milestones to work towards. - The overworld's 'pressure' mechanic that is supposed to hurry you along from mission to mission has virtually no impact on the game. You seem to be able to run out the clock as often as you like without permanent repercussions. - Missions are repetitive. - Combat maps are repetitive. - The enemy AI is thick as a brick, frequently planning moves that makes its units collide with one another and firing short range weapons at targets that cannot possibly enter its effective range within 5 seconds. - The enemy AI will frequently not plan any actions for some of its units. This is especially noticeable when fighting 8 or more units. - The crafting mechanic isn't unlocked until about a quarter into the game and you won't be using it much at all until about three quarters into the game. It requires blueprints, a lot of resources and several base upgrades to be worth using and it's certainly possible to complete the campaign without even using it once. - The crafting menus have no way to sort items. The mech assembly menus do, so why don't the crafting menus? - Most resources do not have a listed maximum capacity. You have to find out the hard way what these capacities are by paying close attention to when you first waste resources by hitting said capacity. This is not documented anywhere. - Pilots in Heavy mechs take reduced Pilot damage. This is not documented anywhere. - Weapons are varied but weapon balance is terrible. Some of the most commonly found weapons greatly outclass every other weapon in its range class in every aspect. - Drop rates are terribly unbalanced. This also negatively impacts the crafting system, since you can't craft what you don't first salvage several copies of. - Melee attacks frequently miss the target that the turn projection claimed should have been a hit. - The Normal difficulty is way too easy. I ended the campaign on Normal with 0 dead pilots, 0 traumatized pilots and 0 lost (mech) frames. Part of the issue is that aforementioned lack of a pressure mechanic and the very easily abused 'double XP for deploying one fewer pilot' mechanic. - There are only four pilot classes and very little thought seems to have gone into their semi-random talent trees. The names of talents are also frequently memes and pop culture references, which is a very jarring tonal clash with the rest of the game. - There is a level cap for Pilots but this level cap is not communicated to the player in any way, even upon reaching said cap. - The Sharpshooter class has multiple ability descriptions that boost 'long range damage' or 'long range ballistic damage' but then adds the totals together, making it unclear what is actually being boosted: 'long range' or 'long range ballistic.' - The game explicitly states that elite enemies may randomly join the fight, but only one such enemy was ever added to the game. Once you defeat them that game mechanic just disappears completely. Phantom Brigade is the very definition of a diamond in the rough. There's truly tremendous potential here, but its brilliant core gameplay is held back by so, so many poorly developed mechanics, jarring inconsistencies and just plain bad AI. It is my hope, but not my expectation, that the studio continues to polish this diamond. I could see it one day being hailed as one of the best TBT games ever made, but it still has a long road ahead if it wants to claim that title.

The new version is very interesting. Some have described it as a step forward, a half-step back... I'm having a ton of fun with it, but I will say, some of the focus has shifted around. The overworld map, which felt very granular and crunchy in the 1.0 version, is now simplified... and this initially seems like a drawback, and I'd love it back, but... it does have one huge advantage. The structure of the new overworld map means that the game is much more curated and directly shaped by the developer design - progression is a ton smoother, and the decisions you need to make about what happens next are incredibly clear, whereas in 1.0, with all that freedom... choices were much foggier, less obvious. In an ideal world? I'd love the 'open world' back, but as a New Game+ type deal - essentially as a harder gameplay mode with a few more options. As it stands? The 2.0 update is smoother, easier to learn, and clearer. Yes, some things are being lost - but a ton is being gained, especially for new players and those who want to give this game one long play-run. I hope they're not done, because these tweaks are fascinating, and I'd love to see an eventual 3.0.

A hugely impressive and original game, and tremendously fun even in its original Early Access builds - while the 1.0 release was a little thin on content in the overworld campaign it was still a very entertaining and satisfying combat sandbox, and they've done so much more with it for the 2.0 release, continuing to develop the game for years more after early access - while also showing their integrity through making some very solid ethical decisions about who they collaborate with as a studio. Avoiding the details here, but they're good people with good principles who stand up for what's right for both their own team and their fans. I've bought it twice, once in its original early access form on another platform and then again here on Steam, and I might buy it again as a gift for a friend soon - it's worth it, and so are its creators. Try the demo or just jump in, especially during the current 50% sale celebrating the release of 2.0, and keep supporting good developers!

It's a fun turnbased tactic games that is quite unique. You can see your enemy's intention before committing to making actions yourself. The mech customization is quite deep. You can make tanky frontline mechs with shield and shortrange weapons to disrupt your enemy's plan; artillery/long range mechs that sits in the back and deal a ton of damage; and everything in between. It's a good, fun game until about 20 hour mark, when the game has nothing new to offer. You liberate a province, and do it again and again. The enemy does the same things every time. There are a bout 10 types of missions. Then you realize the "base upgrades" are quite shallow and the whole thing is kinda tedious, like a chore. I'd say pick this up if you like "into the breach" and wanna spend about 10 20 hours experiencing a new kind of turn-based tactic with good mech customization.

This game will never be complete until you can re-watch an entire combat scenario in real time from start to finish. Not just the last 5 seconds. :(
