Wondering whether Planet of Lana II is a sequel worth recommending? Well, the honest truth is, that’s something only you can answer for yourself. But if you enjoyed the first one and you’re already here, then why not pay attention to what I have to say about it. Normally I do things a little differently. I finish a game, watch a few videos, maybe do some research on this and that, and then write my review while listening to the game’s soundtrack. This time though, I’d been following the discussions and opinions around the game ever since launch, and after finishing it, I even left the title screen running for another hour while writing this. And now that the review is done, I’ll catch up on all the videos, including the making-ofs and interviews. But before I do that, let me tell you how much my own impression of Planet of Lana II lines up with what I’ve generally been seeing and hearing from the community. Similar to the first game, I agree with the general consensus that the game once again looks absolutely beautiful. It has a great atmosphere, good music and sound design, and tells an interesting story. but when it comes to the puzzles, opinions seem to differ. Some find them more varied than before but still too easy. Others even found some of them unnecessarily complicated. And honestly, I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. So yea some puzzles are way too easy and almost feel uncreative, while others are just downright irritating or presented in a way that can be pretty confusing. Then there’s one thing we all seem to agree on, Lana’s movement feels better than before but it’s still not quite perfect. Personally, I also would have liked to see a few more moves and different animations. And whether the lack of major changes should be seen as a somewhat unambitious approach or simply as a deliberate decision by the developers to play it safe, I don’t want to judge that here. I just want to point it out because either way someone would have complained about it, and sometimes that someone could be me, but hey not this time. The ending is something and I don’t want to spoil, but there will always be people who would have wanted it to turn out differently. I’m perfectly happy with how it ended though and I just hope we’ll get another Planet of Lana game someday. Before wrapping things up, there’s one more thing I want to touch on, the technical issues. I’ve seen quite a few people mention them and I ran into some things myself as well. No crashes for me thankfully but there were physics issues, some little problems with the camera and some scenes, and a few small issues with Mui. One thing that held me up for a while, and almost made me uninstall the game, was that the controller input for controlling one of the floating robots simply didn’t work for me. Lana would just crouch instead of doing the action. So I ended up using the Alt key on my keyboard instead. Not exactly ideal, but at least that let me move on. So what’s my overall takeaway? Planet of Lana II doesn’t reinvent the wheel and it doesn’t have to. It has its flaws and some of them are hard to ignore, but for me they never outweighed everything the game does right. If you loved the first game then I think you already know whether this is something for you.
A Flower, a Pearl and a crown To get a sequel to Planet of Lana was a surprise for me, an even bigger surprise is the absolut fair price tag it got including a discounted bundle for those who owned the first game. Its good to be back in this beautiful handcrafted world of Lana. I played the first game not that long ago. So I kinda had some fresh memories about it. I remember I loved the story and the art. The only sort of dissapointment was the repetitive gameplay. So when they announcent this sequel, including a demo, I had high hopes to get another beautiful storyline within a remarkable world bundled together with a big improvement to the gameplay. The demo proved my speculations and with that I went a bought the game day one. Today I have beaten the game. In comparision the the first one its is much easier to get 100% of the achievements. Which is neat. And yes the biggest question. The gameplay was much better as in the first installment. The variety of riddles and the variety within the control mechanic made each chapter and each level unique enough to not stall the story of the game. The game became and actuall game, where the first one felt like a disney movie with the occasional interuption to call itself a game. However the second game has some unexpected flaws. While they managed to improve the quality the story felt weaker in comparison to the first one. The game clearly stepped back in scale and danger of the first game to allow a much simpler, yet equaliy emotional story to be told. The game takes its time to allow the player to learn more about the game. To be fair it offers a glimpse of what the world outside of lana sees, offers. Yet leaves more questions than answer till the end. Lana is older and maybe a little more mature, but her impact from the first story is ignored and she is still treated as a kid. While a lot of what actually is going on is dealt with offsreen. Some plotpoints are even not fully resolved at the end. Still the interaction between Mui and Lana, there dealing with the world and its beauty and danger is still a remarkable tale to be experienced. Its just the cause for all of that and the logical quest to pursue is underwhelming. If they make a third one i hope its a little longer, much deeper and offers some answer to questions still left open at the end. For now I will enjoy the wonderfull soundtrack and wait for the future to come.
Lana and Mui are back Another good game! Surprisingly, there is some real story development happening in the later half, and by the endgame, I actually found myself pretty invested in the narrative for Lana and Mui at the end. :D Gameplay-wise, it keeps the chill vibe but introduces a few fun new mechanics like running and swimming (deep dives), which is a really nice addition to their journey. (solving puzzles) Note for new players: You don't actually need to play the first game to jump into this one. There is a very helpful recap of Lana and Mui's previous adventures right at the start. Definitely recommend it!
