I Have been playing this with my son for 11 years, 1500 hours clocked. I am in my 50s he is in his 20s. We have had so much fun. Each new release adds and modernizes. Each release balances. There is an active mod community. This is a constantly evolving game that is perfect for the strategy seeker. Not only is this a fun game to play single player VS computer (which has a lot of specialized difficulty tiers) it is has options for co-op and PVP ranked plus a new Galactic War (which I have not explored because I love the OG game play). The developers really had the serious gamer in mind when developing. Features like automatic game play recording and review, detailed game play stats plotted on a second by second progress chart PLUS the ability to rewind a player vs computer game and replay from any point in the game is soooo beyond any game of it’s type. It has helped me review turning points in game play and develop new strategies. My analytic brain is in heaven when I plan and review!!! Plus I can keep up with my son this way.
Very good grand-scale RTS in the style of Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander. It is currently being developed by the community, so there are still new features being added, and the balance is robust. The game is fast paced, most games will last less than 15 minutes, so you decide if you are into that or not. However, the barrier to entry in this game is much lower than in other games like this, because there are only 2 tiers of units + titans, and there is only 1 faction, so it's easy to learn about every building and unit. It might be a massive disadvantage to people who want a very complex strategy game with many tiers of units and asymmetrical factions, but if you want that, there are multiple modded factions that are balanced pretty well as far as I know. The main advantage of this game over any other RTS is the spherical maps. Having a planet is so much better than a flat map, as it gives opportunity for expansion in literally any direction, and also attack from any direction. And on many maps you actually have several planets, which add an extra dimension to the game. The balance of this game is pretty perfect, anything can always be countered, and even then, there are still balance patches coming out to make more strategies viable. The game is balanced in a way where being offensive is always better than being defensive, which leads to faster paced games. And turtling is completely impossible, which might be a bad thing for some people, but I think it's a good thing. The AI in this game is unfortunately completely braindead, so I don't recommend getting this game purely for singleplayer. There's also no campaign (there is a roguelike mode where you fight AI and get upgrades, but no story). Recently that gamemode got a co-op update, so now you can do that with friends. There are also many mods, that add maps and even factions. So the game isn't dead.
I though the game was dying, by dying i meant the devs were going to forget about it but damn i was wrong, i just came back after leaving it for 4 months and the game has been updated a lot, coop campaing, they overhauled the menu. Its just so good to see the game getting this kind of updates. I totally recommend this game even tho the servers are almost dead, its just a nice game and if you got friends to play with its event better. For me its a 9/10 the gameplay its original and feels good, it even supports mods if you get tired of seeing the same units all the time. I 100% recommend getting the came, probably not offsale but right now with the 50% discount i think its a good investment. Also its very well optimized.
