Well I thought Satan was a level designer at Fromsoftware but apparently he's an upcoming solo indie developer too. Jokes aside, like every other game of Daniel Mullins, it was an experience. I really enjoyed it thoroughly, the developer really knows how to make simple but good games. Nowadays, big studios think the experience or the enjoyment itself derives from great graphics; insane budgets spent on good looking but not fun to play games. This is one fun little game that proves them wrong. It should be FUN first, and this is fun. By the way, huge props to DM Games who released all their games in Turkish. For that very reason, I'll never have a problem paying the full price for their work.

A Game Near Impossible to Describe This review is from the perspective of someone who 100%s games on Steam This review will break many of my usual review conventions. Why? Because Pony Island is a game that’s difficult to describe without spoiling it. It’s a game about a game, and saying much more would rob you of the experience. For this review, I’ll keep each section brief and touch on the gameplay, story, and completion experience of Pony Island. As a quick TLDR though, I do recommend playing this game—it’s a 2-3 hour experience that I think is worth your time. Story This section will be brief. Pony Island is not a game about ponies. The story and the mystery behind the world of Pony Island are some of the best parts of the game. While I have mixed feelings about the conclusion, the journey is definitely worth it. Gameplay The game’s mechanics are fairly simple. There are puzzle sections, gameplay similar to the dinosaur browser game, and some segments where you’re trying to figure out where to go. That last part is vague because, again, it’s hard to review this game without giving too much away. Completion Perspective You’ll likely need a guide and two playthroughs to fully complete Pony Island. It’s a relatively short game that I was able to 100% in about five hours. There’s a chapter select option after finishing the game, which helps with finding all the collectibles. Overall, it’s not too difficult to complete. Final Thoughts I recommend Pony Island to anyone looking for a game that breaks conventional gaming norms. If you’ve played another one of Daniel Mullins’ games, like Inscryption, you’ll know what to expect. P.S. Feel free to friend request me on Steam if you want to keep up with my completionist journey!

Daniel Mullins, I wasn't familiar with your game. An utterly bonkers, dark and twisted puzzle adventure that is meta af. For my money, one of the best indies I've ever played and I haven't even finished it yet. I'd be sure to check out Mullins' other two games ASAP after this. Bravo.

More or less the archetypical example of the genre this dev in particular excels at, where a game presents itself as one thing with one tone before construing itself later into an existential narrative where the game *being* a game is a diegetic tool in whatever plot is being conveyed. I'd argue 'Inscryption' from the same developer accomplishes this to much greater effect and with considerably more demanding and engaging gameplay, but you can see a lot of similar concepts solidifying here that get carried on to later works. Obviously the 'Overwhelming Positive' review score on the store page is there for a reason, alongside the sequel in development currently. Ultimately it's a short and simple experience you can get through in a single sitting, possibly even before hitting Steam's time limit for refunds - But with how polished the entirety of it is, the unexpected amount of depth and secrets crammed into it for how quickly you can get through the surface-level content of the game, and how the already meager price tag of $5 can easily dip down to under a dollar during sales, I wouldn't remotely suggest trying to speedrun then refund. It's worth the full price for the amount of effort alone.
