With couch co-op and simple gameplay, graphics and interface, this game is perfect for dads to play with young kids. Kids can build while you go out and do quests, and vice-versa, allowing for a lot of freeform play that doesn't restrict kids' creativity. Meanwhile, the gameplay depth is just enough to keep you entertained as an adult while it's at the upper limit of what's suitable for a child, striking a happy middle ground.
I'm into survival games, and sometimes ARPG.. and this game ticked both boxes.. really enjoyed my 90 hours. Few tips: o I didn't like the expansion content much (Rifts/Defence) but they are cheap and the character races are cute. imo just stick with the standard world you zone in on. o The Warrior is x5 stronger than any other class if you want to be overpowered. o Craft the Archer station and make pants with 'Double Jump' for any class you play.. just makes exploring so fun. o Make your base wherever.. but I think right at the portal on the starter island is perfect.. no reason to ever move it imo.. and once you set it to your home world, dont be afraid to regenerate your world any time.. uour home world will stay intact, but it will reset the quests on each island so you can do them again for more XP (or ignore them, you will really never go back to old islands anyway)... or regenerate ore/gems to farm.. feels good once you get the hang of it, great for alts too so you can keep your base running for each character.. all your portals that were unlocked will stay unlocked too... its win win win. o The Hard-Mode End-Game content it hard.. even for Warriors.. I did 2 out of the 3 and had enough but I played all the classes through and had a blast.. the game isnt perfect, there are a few things that its missing but it still holds up very well in 2026..
'Portal Knights' is a sandbox game with some light RPG elements. As a fresh Portal Knight you travel to different worlds via the titular portals, where you fight enemies, mine ores, and do little quests for the NPCs - 'Portal Knights' is divided into 3 zones with different biomes and a boss at the end of each. Nevertheless, 'Portal Knights', although promising at first, can quickly become repetitive and shallow - combat is straightforward, the same enemies reappear at later worlds in different colors, quests are rather mundane, and I have found farming and potion making redundant. I have played as a bulky warrior and most of the time when fighting I could just stand and hold LMB. Also, 'Portal Knights' has achievements and items locked behind a paid DLC - not a nice move... In the end, I have decided on a positive review (with a score of 6/10), as I have still enjoyed the game, especially the building aspect - there is a nice variety and diversity of building blocks and decorative items to build your base (you can even purchase your own island!). 'Portal Knights' is enjoyable, as long as you don't expect it to be the next 'Minecraft' or 'Terraria'. Additionally, it is perfect for kids who want to start their adventure with RPGs or have fun with parents/friends in the multiplayer mode.
