this is one of the best memories i'll ever have of my childhood. I love this game even if there isn't way too much stuff to do.

TL,DR; VERY cool and quite relaxing, not to mention beautiful to look at IMHO. Gives me the same vibes as an Atari game, if it was a lucid dream. Definitely worth 10 bucks IMHO. You can't really make an objective review of a piece of art of any kind. Especially for something like this. Proteus is technically a 'game' in that it's on steam, has controls, runs on PC and has unlockables, but in a deeper sense (for me) it was/is more like going back to the feeling of what it was like to be 5, collecting bugs and rocks n shit and enjoying the cool sounds and colors of the world around you. Kind of like being high w friends. Comfortable, easygoing, and a bit sluggish. Then, towards the end of the day/night cycle, you're guided towards a rock circle, you're whisked away, and the world changes. The island generated by the game goes through one of each of the 4 seasons, with a day and night cycle for each, with certain triggers setting of changes in visuals, music, and such. Some of them are tied to landmarks, some aren't. You aren't told anything and are entirely free to wander around figuring it out and taking it all in for yourself, letting your mind go monkey mode and running around bumping into things while enjoying fun sounds and colors. By the way, the Boards of Canada/Eno influence on the music is very palpable. David Kanaga makes weird ass shit in a weird ass way, musically, but here? the soundtrack absolutely fucking shines. I'm not going to talk about the ending much because it's equal parts annoying and drawn out and kind of transcendental/metaphoric. The art snob asswipe in me wants to be like 'it's like a representation for death and finality, or like one of waking up from a dream", but the ADHD riddled gamer in me wants to go "this shit sucks let me chase more bees around". Thankfully, after 1 round through, you get to fiddle a bit with how crazy the world gen gets and extend the amount of time you get to vibe. 9/10 A welcome break from all the gunfire in most of the other games i play lol

I don't think it matters what you think a game should have or how it should be played. What matters for this is that it gives you the tools you need and you don't have to worry about anything else. Something doesn't feel alright? Use wasd and move. There is a place with animal totems. When you go to the center of it, at night, all the stars start pulsating. If the conditions are right, you can see some comets raining. I've been resetting the night every time and going back to this place for some minutes now. It feels like the stars are trying to tell you something. Every star is unique and acts differently. You can see every tiny star. You are protected by the animal totems and the stars can't hurt you. The special light on the sky is the moon, and for me that special person has always been mona. I feel embarrassed even telling people about her because of how obsessed I am. I regret telling about her to a friend recently, even though I didn't say anything. It's a person that looks at you and already knows everything about you. I think it might have been 2016 when I met her for the first time, I don't know why we met in that place from all the other places we could have met. She was organizing some puzzles and challenges, it might have been all her plan from the start, to find that kind of people. I don't know, I don't think I will ever have hindsight of this. I didn't know what RSA was, I didn't know what in the hell a glibc was. But I know why I spent so much time researching these topics, I wanted to talk to her about them, I tried to impress her solving her challenges. I had such a massive ego back then, I always felt superior to everyone else. She was different, I could not beat her in anything, she was smarter in everything. Sometimes it felt like she knew everything there was to know. Did she glow in the dark like the moon? Was all a plan to find a specific kind of people? Did she know I was faking it all, that I didn't belong there? I will never know. I never had been in love like that, not even my childhood crush could beat that feeling. I have been trying to replace her with anything I can find, but no one is good enough. Something in me tries to sabotage every new relation I have, because I know it's not mona. Not as smart, not as original, not as interesting, not as scary. It's never worth it. Will I ever allow myself to be happy again? And then, the night stops, all the lights stop pulsating. And I get a lucid attack, everything is so real for a bit. I am no longer hypnotized by the stars. But what do I do in this situation? I go back to the Stonehenge thing and speed the day to go back to the night, then walk back to the totems, and repeat the thing again. Is this an addiction? No, hell no. I don't even know if I like this feeling. But that is just me, maybe I'm just a bit depressed. I heard someone describing this game as a white canvas, and that's a beautiful way to put it. Maybe painting is not for everyone, but whatever you put in there, if you try to be original, it's yours.

Though I am (in my opinion, justifiably) bitter about the devs making billions and then simply abandoning the game, I must admit that this game taught me to be a man, go to war, die for my country. Consider a six-pack of cough syrup for a 3-D experience.
