July 2025
I need to preface this review by saying that I'm a long time fan of the Pump it Up franchise, and I've been an avid player for nearly a decade. This'll be a bit of a long review, but bear with my yapping here, especially if you're on the fence about some of the more controversial changes. This game is just about everything I want out of a home port. If you're interested in playing it, you've no doubt heard about the changes to some of the core mechanics that it introduced, like the hold timing requiring you to hit hold note heads accurately, scoring calculations that are different from the arcade release (Phoenix, at the time of writing), and changes to the charts to make them more keyboard/controller friendly. A lot of these changes are really controversial to a lot of players who want an exact arcade port at home, but this isn't that - and that's a really good thing! If you're going into this expecting or wanting a game that's mechanically and visually 1:1 with the arcade series, you're going to be disappointed. But what you'll be getting instead is a game specially crafted for home players, with a new visual style and a tried & true UI/UX for PC rhythm gaming. All of the changes made to the content and mechanics in RISE feel like they've actually been thought through, and it shows. I happen to own a few now-unsupported arcade titles, namely PIU Prime 2 and XX, as well has hardware to be able to play them with a hand controller or keyboard. Obviously anyone who plays this way will have different experiences and opinions, but while it was interesting at first, it became clear pretty quickly that even though it's well balanced and fun on a set of big dance stages, it just doesn't work well on a keyboard or shrunken down controller for your hands. It ranges from just not really being challenging at all, to being frustratingly difficult in a way that isn't fun because it's just so finicky to execute, without much in between. The timing and hold mechanics are too forgiving to make passing more straightforward charts feel satisfying, and the more complex ones can be super uncomfortable to execute, especially if you play spread (i.e. SDF JKL). RISE manages to solve just about all of these problems by taking what didn't work for hand play in the arcade version, and tweaking it to keep it challenging and fun regardless of your skill level with a dance pad. Everything flows really, really well. It really does feel amazing to play. Even the new RISE originals are charted in a way that still feels like the arcade content I know and love, while remaining satisfying on keyboard and controller. The timing windows feel nice and snappy, and while it's hard for me to tell if they made them much tighter, it's still very satisfying without making trickier patterns frustrating to execute. Requiring accurate hits on holds keeps the flow going, without weird breaks where you can just hold down all the buttons to win. The letter grade after a song actually feels representative of how I felt I performed accuracy-wise. It all just works, and it still feels like I'm playing Pump it Up! If you're on the fence about this one, give it a try. If you really don't like it or it's not what you want out of a home port, that's totally fine, and you'd be well within your rights to get it refunded. But Andamiro really made something special here, and if you can see the vision, then I think you'll have a fantastic time with this game! The fact that they could make Pump it Up accessible to anyone, without the need for an arcade-size dance pad, while still keeping the soul of the game intact, is genuinely impressive. They didn't have to do this, but they did, and I really hope to see more of it in the future! Thanks for coming to my TED talk :)

This is a very trepidatious recommendation - apart from default sync being awful and requiring some trial and error to get it feeling right, this is a surprisingly very competent version of the classic Pump It Up gameplay that feels really good to play on high refresh rate monitors! All the new originals and their BGAs also rock too and the charts feel really nice to play either on keyboard or with hand pump controllers. half doubles is neat but i do wish full doubles will appear also, something I'm sure they'll add since a lot of people have been asking for it since this has been revealed. That said, not without its issues, of which there's plenty - all of the AI upscaled BGAs look awful (and I understand the team working on this probably can't do full, true remasters of these BGAs but the results look worse than just leaving them untouched), the rank division system seems pretty confusing, and the last thing I wanted to see was a copy of a lot of the same progression systems that DJMAX had, but done worse (ideally they shouldn't have copied that at all but, oh well). When you're in the core gameplay, a lot of it feels great - but the wrapper surrounding it is definitely rough. But these are things (except for maybe those upscaled BGAs) that they could definitely improve on - and I don't think the price tag is unwarranted given the track list that this game has. It's a promising start and if you love Pump / arcade rhythm games I wouldn't say you'd regret picking it up - but there is definitely a lot of QOL jank and strangeness to the release that feels like it needs more time to iron out.

It's exactly what I expected it to be and is A LOT more fun than I originally thought it would be. I'm a die-hard Pump it Up arcade player and have never really entered the realm of playing simulators on keyboard but I have been super surprised at just how much I have been enjoying myself with this (although I am admittedly much better at this game on my feet currently lol) Just a fair warning, if you are expecting/wanting an arcade replacement out of Rise, do not buy this. This game is essentially what happens if you were to make Pump it Up like your usual keyboard rhythm game. The timing window is tighter, the charts are modified and not meant for pad play, and have forced holds. It's a really really fun KEYBOARD BASED rhythm game but do not expect to buy this thinking you're going to play on your home pads and be thriving, especially at higher levels. TLDR: Pump it Up Rise gets 5 big booms

Promising early access release. I expected this to be nothing more than a low effort cash grab when it was first announced, but they actually went through the trouble of updating a lot of old songs, visuals and charts, while adding new, completely original songs that (still) aren't available on the Arcade version. There are also some nice quality of life features the Arcade lacks, such as proper Downscroll, granular BGA brightness adjutment, timing offset and audio offset options, and various "target score" options that will make grinding scores more convenient (similar to the Arcade's PASS command, but with more conditions such as targeting a Full Combo, or your own Best Score etc). Game still needs more features and some polish, but overall it's a great start, as long as they keep improving it. Feels very good to finally have an official home version of Pump it Up after such a long time!
