This game lets you shoot pretty much everyone who is not strictly speaking necessary to your mission. And once the crap hits the fan from the start of the game nearly everyone is trying to kill you. Forget the plot. Forget the "politics". It's like a retro bar-fight between sweatshop workers and strikebreakers. But with really cool space suits and guns. Then the strikebreakers hired some bikies for backup and armed them with nukes. Anyway... So including friendly fire from both sides , you can kill everyone except for three other people in this game. EOS, Hendricks and the Weasel. And get off scott free :) And technically, while the non-combatants are people you really shouldn't shoot, they'll say that they are on your side and then push the alarm buttons. Or squeal. Fullpoints for realism. You can turn the alarms off after shooting them. I prefer shooting them first. And if you don't. you will be overwhelmed with the people you DIDN'T kill when trying to do your missions. So after you get healed up, waste everyone in every room and every mission should go off without a glitch. And yes. The game DOES play that way. Thinking does get you killed. If it shoots, kill it. If it's taking a leak in the toilet kill it. If you can see it through the wall with a rail gun scanner kill it. You don't get achievements it's an old game. But hit the save facilities often. Use the explicit saves as well as the quicksave facility. Not only for saving because of survival. Not only because in some cases some decisions can make the game unplayable, But also when survival IS assured it is REALLY fun to go back to a room that was hard with a gun and redo it.. with a flame thrower.. a railgun... or nuke.. just for the fun value and to listen to the sounds of the bots screaming on fire, then bumping into the other bots to repeat the cycle. It's the little details like that that showed that THQ and volition really cared about their art. Full points to the writers for designing a game that takes the premise that no-one cares about the whys and wherefores of the shitshow, but once it gets rolling as long as there is a reason that the player needs to pick up a gun or crowbar to stay alive, no one really cares what the reason is, but that game is a solid winner. If the shitshow is solid. (like doom,half-life,postal,etc) And Red Faction is a Solid Shitshow of an FPS from stating riot until bomb defusal andparker getting sarcasmzoned by EOS. In summary 10/10 would "What do you mean Geneva convention? I don't have a Swiss Passport!" again. Although this was a windows game it was successfully played from start to end under linux on a q4os 4.7 64-bit system running steam, using the compatibilty mode of Proton 7.0-6 in lieu of windows.

play it with "Dash Faction" - a community launcher which fixes a lot of things and makes the game better playable on modern hardware. it also give u widescreen resolution etc. via ingame console u can change the fov and weapon fov, but for some guns the player model isn't rendered if using higher values than default. within the installation window there is an option to use the dash patcher version straight over the steam version, so basically if u launch the game thru steam - it starts the patched game and u have ur fps counter, steam overlay etc. totally smooth experience with this patch for an already awesome game.

Another fun retro FPS, apparently considered one of the PS2's best shooters, but it holds its own against any of the others. It's certainly intense - the second half jumps up in difficulty a fair bit, with much tougher enemies coming at you with more powerful weapons, as well as a couple of boss fights. Using the vehicles is fun and I was able to control them easily using the mouse. Warning: you may have to find a workaround in an instance where you need to lower a sub into the water. Quicksaving just after I pressed the button seemed to work. Yep, there is water on Mars.
