I am going to be transparent, I will not thumb down this game because the idea and the game, the atmosphere, the art is literally perfect. I am obsessed. But it's basically unplayable in this state. I have a $5,000 PC and I cannot play this game unless I lower the settings, and I run in slow-motion if my settings are high. I really hope there is an upcoming fix because I really want to binge play this game so badly.

I'm giving this game a review while recognizing that it is still in early access, i got it on sale, and i want it to succeed. It gets a 'positive' review becasue i don't regret buying it. This game deserves a mixed review given how close it is to release, it's current technical state, and the MSRP for the game. There is much to like about Reka regardless, and it scratched a very specific itch. Reka is at it's core a bad first game, poorly built in unity. I would consider it in a playable state, and i didn't have any game breaking bugs, but that is a very low bar. Reka is full of clipping, busted quest lines, and ugly, broken, unintuitive menus. There are too few assets for the map, and the map has it's procedurally generated assets jumbled in weird places on a regular basis. NPC and village assets are especially samey, which makes it difficult to naturally find back quest lines and dialog without consulting the map and compass. Additionally, some of the assets for this game are just lazy and the animations are few and far between. I don't feel it's strictly reasonable to call it stylized; it just feels dated or incomplete. The game is overall 'bare bones'. The story line is still very short in it's current state, and most of the tasks are fetch quests or very simple crafting. Because the map is mostly uninteresting, and most of the tasks are fetch quests, exploring the map and running back and forth between quest markers can be tedious. The game also heavily incentivizes thoroughly exploring said map. I think most of the technical bugs will probably be resolved in short order before release, and the devs are obviously working hard to polish the game. However, issues with the lack of assets and minimal content may take significantly more development time. I don't expect core flaws in the map or gameplay design to be resolved unless there is a major overhaul, or until the developers start making a second or third game. Because of these reasons, i don't think the base MSRP is reasonable. Reka does some things very well and i enjoyed them A LOT. Reka is dedicated to the mechanics of house building, and the developers love for this part of the game is obvious. Reka allows you to inituitively build a large, intricate, and very cute witch house with a cohesive aesthetic. Most of the gameplay outside of house building is incentivized by finding more items/materials to make your house larger, and more detailed. This is also the primary draw for the game and where you will spend most of your time playing. I also liked the eastern european witch aesthetic. This is something I haven't really seen before in gaming and i was really happy to see something unique. I appreciate the cohesion between the cold windy november vibes, the music, and the bits of eastern european lore. These elements together make this game special, unique, and very cute. I think the core premise for this game is fantastic, and a reworking of this game either through progressive updates or a second game could result in something excellent, but in it's current iteration it still feels like a rough draft, not the last edit before publishing.

I like being a boy, but there was a part of me that said, "yeah, but as a boy, you'll never know what it was like being a witch of the woods,". Then this game showed up! Just a story of a apprentice witch working under the great Baba Yaga. The game is devoid of action, and thank goodness! im a cute witch of the woods, not a huntsman! Its not my job to slay beasts or protect myself from night terrors. Its my JOB it make my chicken hut look nice, make pancakes, and cast a few spells to make grandma happy. There is a lot done with very little dialogue, so of youre not a fan of reading then no worries. If you do like reading though, its full of depth. As if every sentence has been put into the game with intention. You will feel isolated as a witch of the woods, but isn't that the point? All im all im excited to see where this goes, and hope it sticks to its original vision. There really isn't another game that gives you this perspective as a player and I find it so very fascinating.

Is it buggy? Yes. Are there mistakes? Yes. But honestly, I don't care how much time it takes for this game to be finished, it is clear as day that it's made with love and developers want to give us pure magic ✨. I see you, I appreciate you. 💜 It's been a while since a game spoke to me to this degree and I fell in love immediately. Not only is the vision absolutely beautiful, the music, the mood and the lighting... oh the lighting. Tears rushed to my eyes so many times it's embarrassing. I'm not sure if it's melancholy or something more but I LOVE this game already. It is exactly something I've been waiting for.

I enjoy Reka a lot. It is exactly what I was hoping for. A cozy exploration game, no rush, no threat. Just explore, collect and enjoy the gloomy, yet comforting autumnal vibes :) I'm a little peeved about the UI navigation when playing with controller, but I'm sure that's gonna be fixed as the game grows. If I, a bald and bearded man, can enjoy being a little forrest witch so can anyone. It's a lovely game.
