A decently fine BxG romance, with a lil’ Spy-Sci-Fi potential! (8.1/10) (• Played with H) I found Riddle Joker to be pretty fun. Maybe I am just in JPVN hell and in a honeymoon-phase for BxG Romcom moeges like this, but I do think it has some pretty cool moments, and I enjoyed most of my time with it. I admit, maybe it’s 20% “cool, spy, sci-fi” + 80% generic school-romcom and they could’ve done more with the setting; but when it’s good (Mayu & Ayase’s), it goes all-in on being a thrill enough to make up for it; and in those two the split might be 50-50. The length and effort shown is definitely what makes me favor this game quite a bit; though it can feel like a slog at times. On top of having some personal bias for imouto charas and her route (Nanami) being surprisingly sweet along with Mayu’s; I really love the LIs. Ayase can be cute with her Tsun antics, but some of the banter gets a bit tiring. My personal favorite ended up being Mayu despite initially finding her character type to be the least interesting. I think because it has a little bit of everything done well without any noticeable downsides, and the relationship progression pace felt highly natural and believable. That said, there’s still a lack of consistency in some ways. The lovely cast feels underutilized in some routes (Hazuki’s, Ayase’s); other LIs + Kyouhei (being the “friend group for the fair”) feel like they barely appear at all once you pick these 2; and should’ve been there more to talk. But this isn’t as bad when you play Nanami or Mayu; there’s some reasonably fun banter among the cast in ‘em at least. MC’s personality flipflops between being annoyingly rude (esp. to Hazuki for teasing convos, and to a lesser extent w/ Ayase) & sometimes pretty okay at being an honest, fine lover. I can still feel there’s a lack of character consistency here sometimes across routes, e.g. how the girls react on not being picked, too. I do also feel the MC is quite over-pervy in monologue sometimes ; and the fanservice in the common route feels a bit much (in their efforts to ”equally show each LI” in suggestive situations), but for the target audience of cishet dudes it’s a non-issue. I just wouldn’t recommend this for the girls, and out of my ~5 BxG romcoms played, Nekopara or Otome Domain almost works better as a general recommendation over this. This is my first Yuzusoft title, and I believe it if people say this is their weakest. It’s generally fine, but the level of inconsistency between route qualities, lack of some art potential, and just general pacing vibes all serve as cracks to an otherwise good concept. Information: (•) 100% Route Order rec; Hazuki -> Chisaki -> Nanami -> Mayu -> Ayase. This is almost “least-plot relevant to most”, but Chisaki’s literally can’t be done 1st and is just a mini-sideroute. The first 3 can be shuffled a bit, personally I did swap Nanami to be my 2nd instead to give myself a boost from the boredom that would be Hazu -> Chisa, but if you want to work your way up from meh to good; this order coincidentally almost fits that metric too. Arguably, Hazuki & Chisaki’s route felt the most like mindless fluff (that you might want to skip them) at times; but I’ll elaborate later(💬; More details in Comments!). If you will only play 1 or 2 routes, Mayu & Ayase is fine; generally play them last due to the bit & “plot” reveals. Some of the dialogue in Mayu’s follows up nicely as a set-up to Ayase’s imo, like what Aya says, MC’s dad, and the “solution”. (•)Playtime: 47h22m52s; 8h38m58s (18.25%) of which are H scenes. The 47h includes 9h3m as my first read through common route, + 4h2m of Chisaki’s sideroute + all 4 main LI routes, but not including After-story extras (💬). After-stories are generally 2 little story scenes for each; total of 2 story ~1h30m runtime per 4 LI, ~1h of it H scenes. Except Chisaki gets less. (•) Full VA. (•) Multiple Route . (+) Pros & General Ratings (/10): (+)Writing: 7.5. Passably fun in general. Nothing that puts it above my expectations, but it could be worse. I enjoyed reading through it when I was in the moment. (+)Art: 8.7. I really like the style on this. The sprite expression changes are really numerous and feel quite animated for what’s technically static; sometimes it’s even hard to screenshot them and not catching faded eyes. The CGs are all pretty cute and lovely. And of course the H stuff are good too; tho I think they generally could’ve used more variants / use art cut-ins , to properly depict kissing & gropes that’s in the lines since some angles don’t allow for easy variants on this. There’s a good saliva string on some Nanami & Mayu’s stuff, but others missed the potential to utilize the same. (+)Cast (LIs): 8. They are all pretty lovely and distinct, if not trope-y. I do think some of the personal complexes (Mayu on her ‘loss of youth’ but only being a 2 year older nee-san; Hazuki being a closet pervert) can be pretty tiring at times, but for the most part I enjoyed these bits and even sometimes wished they played a bit more into it. Especially the latter. As love interests themselves I find them all very cute. Again, maybe it’s recency bias but I pretty much love whoever’s route I’m in when I’m doing it. Other supporting Charas like MC’s dad, Kyouhei, and the Principal also have some good moments. Music + VA are a solid 8. Not much to say. Some banger tracks are in here. (+)Good technical capabilities. Maybe this is now standard in modern VNs, but this is the first time I see a VN has UI indicator of when a voice line ends with the (optional?) indicator progress bar. It’s lovely and I find it useful. Also very robust key configurations; you can set mouse holds (right click+cardinal directions swipe) to be shortcuts on certain things. So I can easily toggle auto-mode and go back one line by putting these functions to left and right swipes. There’s a lot of other things I didn’t test, but it seems the most robust yet among all I’ve played. (-) Cons: (-) MC is a bit much at times. Yes, the teasing and the pervy descriptions of the girl’s boobs can be fun to read, I am a gooner too like most, but there comes a point where I actually go “ come on, really? ”. Some just feel out of place or unnecessary during the chill slice of life moments. And again regarding teasing, it’s fun at first, but for Hazuki and Ayase there comes a point where I wished he toned it down, because too much of it without proper progression into “ sincere moments of love ” can ruin pacing. It kind of did, honestly. (-) Slightly lacking art potential. I wish we got more art cut-ins. Easy example are to depict Astral Abilities. like (minor) when MC gets shot and chased with water shots. The promotional material like the Opening video depict Astral Abilities pretty nicely, and the game’s title screen likes to show Hazuki with her Umbrella being her comfort item. But in the actual game these barely get shown visually, and instead just described via lines. Would also be nice to have more normal CGs with the girls once in a relationship with them by +1 or 2. The best you can get out of Hazuki actually holding an umbrella is in one comedy scene with deformed chibis. (-) Hazuki’s route almost feels like an afterthought. At this point I might be a hater. I do find her cute, but the more I think about her being the ‘weakest’ the more I end up noticing flaws. The themes in her route are VERY GOOD as a core concept, regarding ideals vs. personal love, idolization of someone and the disappointment upon discovering their lies . But in execution it just kinda falls flat. I could believe it if they ran out of funds, dev time, or a mix of both and hers was written last 💬. Overall, still a fun time I can recommend!
