Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is the best way to experience this game. That being said I really don't think you should buy this game unless you are a fan of 90's shooters. There is a reason why this game almost never gets mentioned in the same sentence with the classics like Blood, Duke 3D, Quake, Doom, Shadow Warrior, Hexen etc. This game was and is mostly bad. It has some good ideas but they feel unrealized, In this review I will try to break down why this game is a black sheep of 90's shooters. It is not all negative, the game has 3 chapters + one new added for this edition. 1st chapter - The Hunt Begins is a solid chapter and serves like a good intro for the rest of the game. Solid level design, shorter than other chapters but overall good. 2nd chapter - Dark War is just awful. Bad levels design, Really, some of the worst levels in any shooter. Even if you use the map it is still confusing and not in a good way. Skip this chapter. 3rd chapter - Extreme Rott is one of the best chapters in any 90's shooter. Great level design, really good stuff. 4th chapter - The Hunt Continues is almost a carbon copy of Dark War, awful levels. You can skip this one also. This is a simple break down of this game but it is clear that the Extreme Rott sticks out like a sore thumb. The whole game is a mess, it feels like this game was made by 4 teams. The shooting is just ok, you have standard weapons - pistol, double pistols, machine gun and heavy weapons (many of them but you can use only one) This game has a 4 weapon slots 2 for pistol and double pistols, 1 slot for machine gun and 1 slot for heavy weapons like rocket launcher, flame thrower etc. Pistols and machine gun gave unlimited ammo, heavy weapons have limited ammo. You will not need pistols because they are useless. You will however use your machine gun and heavy weapons. Another weird decision, why would anyone design a game with 2 useless weapon slots is beyond me. Heavy weapons feel great to use and there are some really great ones like, some kind of a mix between flame thrower and rocket launcher. This weapon is in fact my fav in this game, it can melt crowds of enemies in a single shot and the sound effect when they melt if pure art :) There is a baseball bat that shoots rockets, cool weapon but the charge time makes it almost useless. There are some funny powers you can use for a limited time. God mode is exactly what it says but the sound effect is one again pure art :) . You can also turn into a dog and reach some secret areas and slaughter enemies, fun and well implemented idea. You can also fly and reach some areas much faster. Other powers are just bonkers, you can turn into a bouncy ball, drunk mode etc. none of them are of any use, they are just there to make fun of you :) Conclusion - limited weapon slots ruin most of the game. Some great weapons but the shooting feels mostly boring, The problem is that in the majority of the game you get little heavy weapons and when you do get them you have only ONE slot. Enemies are standard, grunts that die easily, heavy enemies who are bullet sponges, robots and bosses. I played all the chapters on hard and the amount of bullets you must use to put down a brute soldier is unreal. It can be funny at first but gets annoying after a while. Robots and enemies with rocket launchers can one hit kill you. Bosses are ok but some get re used too much. You can't jump nor crouch. Jump is replaced by jump pads and platforms. These are used mostly to collect lives. Another useless idea, why would anyone care about these lives when you can save and quicksave. There are also traps and most of them are ok but some can be very annoying because they can kill you in seconds and you can't determine exactly where you are standing. Secret areas are ok, you also have secret levels but they are very hard to get to if you are not looking at the map. The music is great but not the new stuff, the old music is great and sound design is solid. If this review is confusing you than playing this game will be a much worse experience :) I haven't even mentioned some stuff. I like this game, Extreme Rott is one of the best chapters ever, with some master class level design. I would say that this game is worth playing just for this chapter. Just skip Dark War and The Hunt Continues because they are extra long and have awful level design. This game is a mess in every way but there is much more to like than to dislike. I can recommend this game but at a discount.

I wish I had the chance to play this as a kid. Still, I was doing fine with Doom, Heretic, Duke 3D, and Wolfenstein 3D. Eventually moved onto Unreal. Still, none of those games make the same impression that ROTT does. I waited to play this game until we got either a proper and efficiently optimized source port, or a full on remaster that gave it the polish and support it deserved. As an infamous imprisoned youtube once said, this game almost did not deserve to get as good a remaster as it got with this. Where to begin? I guess content. It's got it all, of course. Dark War and its Shareware episode the HUNT Begins, Extreme ROTT, a new campaign, as well as the GZDoom TC known as Return of the Triad. Also full PVP support. Next we got an assload of QoL features to tweak including lots of HUD styles, and even beta content restored to full working order. You also get the soundtrack in original OPL, MIDI, or even the 2013 Hulshult arraingements, can swap them on the fly. I know this sounds like an advertisement, but if you're reading ROTT reviews, you probably already know what the game is about and what it is like. It's just good old boom-shoot fun. Highlights are the amount of content to plow through, the humor throughout everything, the optimization and customization features, the absolutely KILLER new episode that only pissed me off once (Casual Sunday Barbecue my ASS). Don't even get me started on the absolute masterpiece of a soundtrack ROTT serenades you with as you blast faux-nazis to kingdom come. It's honestly one of the best soundtracks of classic boom-shoots, if not the best (and that's not even controversial to say when you compare it to Doom, Duke 3D, Quake, etc). NightDive and New Blood are real ones for making this happen. I am so thankful I finally got to enjoy this game in its entireity. Also, give them a pat on the back for NOT making completion achievements for Extreme ROTT. Those levels are just sadistic and cruel. You like old Boom shoots? Like good music? Like achievement hunting? You can't go wrong with this release!

My absolute FAVORITE shooter growing up. DOOM and its ports are close second. It's just RIDICULOUS! Serious Sam is more serious compared to this! Enough hype... Uses a HEAVILY modified Wolfenstein 3D engine and ran in the same DOS4GW mode as DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D did - as I said: heavily modified. Had that cool factor for the time, and looked great on my old Sony Trinitron monitor. Won't wow you today, but is definitely an experience. The camp humor alone is worth the play! Now, it's been converted to the Kex Engine so you can play it on any modern system that it can support! No more DOSBOX, amirite? Why play this? You get to fire ballistics at people - and they explode in messes! They deserve it, though - trust me. A good hand full of ballistics to choose from, but can only hold one at a time. Their leader El Oscuro is a bizarre villain. Embryo copies of himself play into this somehow. A weird scientific warlock monk... There are power ups and annoying collectibles. You even get to turn into a dog! And, if the included levels don't do it for you (and even if they do), there's a Level Editor! Steep learning curve, but open up the maps in the Rise Of The Triad game folder in Steam and there are examples. They'll really help! This game is dope - as in fish, yo!

Gameplay: If I can explain this game in a nutshell, it’s if Wolfenstein 3D was high on sugar. While it is a similar game to Wolfenstien and DOOM and the like since it’s all about exploring levels to find keys and get to the exit. But with the addition of infinite ammo and half a dozen different explosive weapons and insane powerups and a few powerdowns, gives this a more high speed, arcade feel to the gameplay. Sure, as soon as you get a machine gun you can keep holding the fire button non stop, or you can grab a rocket launcher and blow everyone to bits. And while you might get a small swarm every now and again, there’s lots of traps and obstacles to avoid like spike traps, pits, the sky and three different types of fire traps. It even feels more impressive than DOOM at times besides all the gibs flying around, sprites can go on top of each other like you can run underneath these floating devices and land on enemies head, instantly killing them. Not to mention the boss fights are pretty impressive for an early FPS with Darrian trying to hit you with a spike trap before coming out or the speedy and powerful NME that can and will destroy you. As for negatives, I don't like the split missile since it feels inaccurate as it tries to find targets. Or the bat with its charge time and high risk of splash damage. There’s also episode 4 of Dark War(the main campaign) which also feels lacking since with few exceptions, every enemy is a monk. New enemies and weapons aren’t bad since they help keep things fresh but them being the only real threat makes episode 4 really dull really quickly. Not helped with the first phase of the final boss which requires you to do nothing while you wait for phase 2. Presentation: Visually, it’s alright. Lots of brown and greys. Sure there’s an impressive map that details everything, but there isn’t much colour in this. And there are some decorations strewn around as landmarks but they are just tables and statues and the like. Enemy design is much better, as while they also light on color, I can at least tell each type apart like the all black of the net guards or the white of the normal guards, not to mention the goofy tin can look to the robots which I like. Also, I don’t know if this is a remaster or an original thing but I also find it cool they made a second sprite for most of the standard enemies. As for the music, I heard it was great and it didn’t disappoint. Sure they are some joke songs like the Fish Polka and that elevator music, but most of the level tracks are fun, and full of energy. My favourites are “KISS Off” and that one track that sounds like a metal version of a Christmas song. Though I listened to the original MIDI OST while playing. Not sure what the other versions sound like. Verdict: It’s like a better Wolf 3D that can give DOOM a run for its money. 8/10

Rise of the Triad is a great (if a bit janky) classic FPS, and this remaster is a great way to experience it. While Rise of the Triad has not aged as well as games like Doom or Quake, it does enough to separate itself from all the other FPS games that came out in the 90's (especially the game its engine was adopted from, Wolfenstein 3D). For most classic FPS fans, this game is worth a shot. PROS: - The level design does a (mostly) good job keeping the game fresh - Solid amount of content, containing 3 campaigns that total ~12 hours (excluding the Hell that is Extreme RotT) - Game adds substantially to the Wolfenstein 3D engine, making it feel somewhere between Wolfenstein and Doom - Undeniable charm, easter eggs, and fun items - Great remaster with a variety of settings and solid performance CONS: - The weapons are not great, and limiting the user to 3 at a time is a real shame - Enemies can be extremely repetitive, with very little variety - Some levels can be too much of a maze, though they are nowhere near as bad as Wolfenstein 3D
