I wish I had the chance to play this as a kid. Still, I was doing fine with Doom, Heretic, Duke 3D, and Wolfenstein 3D. Eventually moved onto Unreal. Still, none of those games make the same impression that ROTT does. I waited to play this game until we got either a proper and efficiently optimized source port, or a full on remaster that gave it the polish and support it deserved. As an infamous imprisoned youtube once said, this game almost did not deserve to get as good a remaster as it got with this. Where to begin? I guess content. It's got it all, of course. Dark War and its Shareware episode the HUNT Begins, Extreme ROTT, a new campaign, as well as the GZDoom TC known as Return of the Triad. Also full MP/Co-Op support. Next we got an assload of QoL features to tweak including lots of HUD styles, and even beta content restored to full working order. You also get the soundtrack in original OPL, MIDI, or even the 2013 Hulshult arraingements, can swap them on the fly. I know this sounds like an advertisement, but if you're reading ROTT reviews, you probably already know what the game is about and what it is like. It's just good old boom-shoot fun. Highlights are the amount of content to plow through, the humor throughout everything, the optimization and customization features, the absolutely KILLER new episode that only pissed me off once (Casual Sunday Barbecue my ASS). Don't even get me started on the absolute masterpiece of a soundtrack ROTT serenades you with as you blast faux-nazis to kingdom come. It's honestly one of the best soundtracks of classic boom-shoots, if not the best (and that's not even controversial to say when you compare it to Doom, Duke 3D, Quake, etc). NightDive and New Blood are real ones for making this happen. I am so thankful I finally got to enjoy this game in its entireity. Also, give them a pat on the back for NOT making completion achievements for Extreme ROTT. Those levels are just sadistic and cruel. You like old Boom shoots? Like good music? Like achievement hunting? You can't go wrong with this release!

Rating 6/10 Intro It's easy to see why this game was vastly overshadowed by Doom. While it does have some unique elements to it, it felt the need to shoot itself in the foot several times for no reason. Whether it's the invincible metal tin cans, the bullet sponge heavy gunners that can throw grenades with no warning or not clearly sign posting where you're supposed to go. I think this is really only worth playing if you have nostalgia for it or you want a more enjoyable version of what's found in the 2013 reboot. Without question though, the game has a lot of personality found in its characters, power ups, weapons and soundtrack. Positives + Dismemberment. + Good weapon variety. + Steam Workshop support. + Great soundtrack. There's an option to play the soundtrack from either the original or 2013 reboot. + Includes all official expansions released for the game. Including the fan-made Doom WAD, Return of the Triad. + Combat has been re-balanced compared to the original version. They can be turned off if one prefers the vanilla experience. Negatives - The metal tin can enemies are invincible. - Elasto mode only serves to annoy rather than providing a benefit. - Bullet sponge heavy gunners. They can also throw grenades with no warning. - Some levels had me getting lost even with the auto map on. Since levels rarely circle back once you get the key. - It's not made clear as to how you're meant to defeat El Oscuro in the first phase. Apparently, you have to slowly lure him to the level exit. - There's no option for "true 3D" rendering like Polymer in eDuke32. As a result, the level geometry is going to look warped upon looking up and down. Rise of the Triad (2013) review https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198096811507/recommended/217140/

I hope Tom Hall gets randomly hit by testicular torsion pain once in a while for inflicting cruelty upon thousands through his levels. Still Love this game.

Rise of the Triad is a great (if a bit janky) classic FPS, and this remaster is a great way to experience it. While Rise of the Triad has not aged as well as games like Doom or Quake, it does enough to separate itself from all the other FPS games that came out in the 90's (especially the game its engine was adopted from, Wolfenstein 3D). For most classic FPS fans, this game is worth a shot. PROS: - The level design does a (mostly) good job keeping the game fresh - Solid amount of content, containing 3 campaigns that total ~12 hours (excluding the Hell that is Extreme RotT) - Game adds substantially to the Wolfenstein 3D engine, making it feel somewhere between Wolfenstein and Doom - Undeniable charm, easter eggs, and fun items - Great remaster with a variety of settings and solid performance CONS: - The weapons are not great, and limiting the user to 3 at a time is a real shame - Enemies can be extremely repetitive, with very little variety - Some levels can be too much of a maze, though they are nowhere near as bad as Wolfenstein 3D

If Doom and Duke Nukem 3D are boomer shooters, then Rise of the Triad is a silent gen shooter. This game actually started life as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D (and runs on a highly modified version of its engine), and the signs are all over the place - big, abstract, and labyrinthian levels that bear no resemblance to real-world locations, a low number of weapon slots (although the third slot has a variety of options available), pushwalls galore, and a selection of enemies that are supposed to be cultists but bear an uncanny resemblance to Nazis. Unfortunately for Apogee, id Software pulled the plug on the game before releasing Doom and taking the world by storm, requiring the team to completely retool the game as its own thing. By the time the game even released, Doom 2 was already out, leaving poor ROTT to be mostly ignored. However, this is a great game that has a lot to offer if you enjoyed Wolf 3D and want a way more advanced version of it. Instead of monotonous gray hallways, levels are alive with lots of moving tricks and traps, atmospheric skyboxes and lightning storms, and jump pads and moving walkways to add some vertical gameplay to the mix. There's even powerups like dog mode and god mode that are a lot of fun to play with. Although levels can be quite maze-like, the easily-accessible overhead map does a mostly good job of keeping you from getting lost. There's a TON of content here relative to other 90s shooters; 116 levels across the shareware episode, the original game (Dark War), the new episode for this release, and Extreme Rise of the Triad. That's not including the Doom mod bundled with this release called Return of the Triad, which features another 12 levels. I have not played EROTT or Return yet since the rest of the game took long enough to warrant a break, but rest assured you will get your money's worth here. Of course this all goes without saying that Nightdive did a fantastic job with this port. This is the definitive way to play the game and beats the hell out of launching DOSBox. There's tons of customization including which version of the fantastic OST you'd like and which HUD setting you prefer (which includes some all-new options that more closely resemble Doom). I highly recommend giving ROTT a try - just keep in mind the context of the game when it came out and what sort of experience you'll be getting, and you'll find an oddly addicting and satisfying game.
