Okay so the current review bomb is dumb The new 2K EULA reflects the fact that they primarily develop large-scale online multiplayer games, and is designed to apply more or less entirely to that category. They're not going to spy on people playing small singleplayer games or some shit like that with kernel-level anticheats, and Gearbox isn't even directly tied to the EULA change as far as i'm aware. Go piss on 2K's stuff, not Gearbox's. Oh, and the game is a lot of fun. Bigger modding scene than the remake as of the time of writing this, but that's mostly because the remake is still being broken down and bigs mods are still in development. you can poke around other reviews for actual game descriptions

When a game is wildly unbalanced against the player, that's bad design. When a game is wildly unbalanced against the player and lets the player become wildly unbalanced in response, that's something insane and beautiful and glorious. Gaze upon my billion cumulative power-ups, ye mighty, and despair. Or spawn like 5 Overloading Magma worms at once. Either or.

I don't know why I'm surprised that the insane outrage mob found its way to a barely known indie game, but... I am. If you see reviews around this time, you'll be seeing fear-mongering about getting banned for using mods and all this talk about how you're being spied on. The reason for this is a EULA passed down by the publisher, that goes on every game they are involved with (To be clear... this was written for modern multiplayer games). I don't even think Risk of Rain has a method of banning people. Risk of Rain is not spying on you. Use your heads. And to give an actual review, unlike all the ones I'm referencing: The game is good. It's a simple, easy to learn rogue-lite, with a surprisingly large amount of content. The playable characters are all very unique and have interesting attacks and movement options.

🌧️ Risk of Rain isn’t about balance. It’s about overwhelming odds, hopeless battles, and stubborn survival. You don't defeat Risk of Rain. You outlast it, second by second, sprint by sprint, in a world that scales faster than you can breathe. The planet doesn’t care. The clock doesn’t care. The swarm doesn’t care. Only you care — and that’s why you keep moving. Every item, every survivor, every mad dash to the teleporter isn’t about power. It’s about carving seconds of existence out of chaos. 🎮 Why Risk of Rain still matters: ⚔️ Fast, brutal combat — where hesitation is death. 🛠️ Endless stacking of items — turning small victories into wild, desperate survivals. 🌌 Perfect scaling pressure — the world never waits, the world never weakens. 🧠 Survivors that completely change how you play — every run feels different, even when you lose. 🎵 A soundtrack that feels lonely, heavy, and quietly magnificent. Things I mastered in Risk of Rain: • The planet never forgives hesitation. • Greed isn’t an option — it’s a death sentence. • Teleporters are lifelines and death traps. • Movement is more important than firepower. • Some victories happen because you sprinted at exactly the right second. 💬 TL;DR: Risk of Rain isn’t about being prepared. It’s about adapting faster than the planet can kill you — and refusing to let the rising storm erase your existence. You will die. You will blame yourself. You will run again — not because you expect to survive, but because you refuse to surrender. 🔥 Final Verdict: 10/10. Would sprint through collapsing skies and gamble everything for one more breath of survival. 🛠️ Special respect to the Risk of Rain modding community — those who extended the storm, sharpened the survivors, and built new paths through chaos. Your creativity didn’t just expand the game — it expanded the spirit of survival itself. 🚀🌧️

Risk of Rain is a good roguelike with it's flaws , still worth the buy in 2024 even with Risk of Rain Returns available for reasons I will tell further Positives *The roster is very varied , each characters feels different , from Commando with it's long range and mobility to loader with their grapple and hard-punching exoskeleton or sniper and their reload mechanic and devastating steady aim *The music composed by Chris Christodoulou , just like the music of Risk of Rain 2 is amazing and a huge part of what makes the game or even the franchise , what it is *Items and how they stack with themselves or interract with others make the game and end-game really fun from stacking crowbars to deal massive damage to healthy ennemies or bitter roots to become a pack of health or the two at the same time combined with a lot of items *End-game looping can go crazy *Very affordable game , a steal on sale as it goes 80 percent off *Very light game , in storage or in memory usage , it can run on most computers *coop is fun and chaotic , just like Risk of Rain 2 *Artifacts ,unlockable by finding them in the different levels and toggable before starting a run modify the game in fun or painful ways depending on the artifact *item and survivor logs make the game feel more alive *The lack of map really makes you feel like you are stranded as in your first runs you will probably wander and learn the map layouts progressively , this Negatives *The keyboard controls could be a negative for some as mouse controls arent available (but are in Risk of Rain Returns) *The graphics aged a bit from it's release (but they were remade in Risk of Rain Returns) *Almost no meta-progression appart from unlocking characters or items and artifiacts but this could also be a positive as well (Risk of Rain Returns adds challenges) Risk of Rain is a good roguelike but if you want a better vanilla Risk of Rain experience you should buy Risk of Rain Returns since it solves most of the negatives listed above while adding new content for risk of rain 2 and Risk of Rain 1 players alike. So why should you buy this game in 2024 ? For it's mods : Risk of Rain got it's dedicated modding community too just like Risk of Rain 2 albeit smaller and less known The most well known mod for this is Starstorm , a huge expansion mod giving a breath of fresh air to the game ,not like a complete overhaul , more like an expansion that feels like it could be part of the base game Doubling the number of survivors if we do not count brand new survivor variants similar in concept to alt skills albeit more polished some feeling like brand new characters like the Nemeses or Vestiges twisted versions of the survivors changing their playstyle and design , introducing brand new stages , handful of new and originally unused ennemies ,rulesets to spice up runs even more and three new final bosses to fight. Want light effects and background change ? Lively World. The ability to save mid-run ? SaveMod Want some graphics to be more in-line with Risk of Rain Returns ? Returnify These are just a part of the mods available for this game .To discover these new takes on Risk of Rain and to not make their work go unnoticed you should buy Risk of Rain in 2024 Sorry for yapping
