KARA HASSAN, MATCH VICTORY The developer of Rollerdrome, Roll7, was shut down by its publisher Take Two and the game was delisted from Steam for a while. A BAFTA winner indie game, with amazing art direction, gameplay and storytelling. If you want to play this (as you should) try to play it in alternative ways and don’t give your money to the people that treat their devs like trash. Rollerdrome can be what I playfully call a “Kung Fu Game” which, for me, means that it is a game about skill and repetition and is sort of an all star favorite category of mine. In theory you can finish Rollerdrome with around 6 or 7 hours of gameplay, but that playtime can come closer to 20 or even 30h if you want to master it and get 100%. It is up to you to decide if you want to really learn the game or just have a good time with it in a more casual manner. The best way to describe playing this game is "Tony hawk with guns” (despite the character using roller skates). The objective is simple: kill all the enemies without dying to win the match. To do that you begin with simple guns like shotgun and pistols, but as you progress in the game you add rocket launchers and laser guns to your arsenal, with all of it sharing the same ammo. The enemy variety also increases with the difficulty as you go along, and they are all very distinct from one another with different types of attacks and demanding specific strategies to deal with each one of them, and on top of that you also have some bosses to bring a little bit of spice to the mix. As you kill the enemies you will need to reload your guns, which you can do by performing tricks with your roller skate. The tricks not only reload your weapon but they also grant you points that you will use to complete score challenges to progress during the campaign. You can also use a mechanic called Reflex time that you activate to slow down time to help you hit your shots and buy you some seconds to plan your next move. The main evasion tool is the dodge button, in which Kara rolls to avoid damage. The catch is that if you are good with your timing you can perform a Perfect dodge which enables you to enter Super Reflex time, a version of the reflex time that happens when you activate right after a perfect dodge and gives you a neat damage boost and extra points. Overall this game offers you amazing and responsive movement, action and theatrics and even though mastering the mechanics can be daunting at first, if you give Rollerdrome an honest chance those things will come naturally during your playthrough. Coming together with that amazing gameplay experience you also have a very good story, especially in the way everything is told to you. The silent protagonist and ultimate underdog is Kara Hassan, a woman that is competing in the violent and dangerous game called Rollerdrome after being a fan since childhood, especially of the competitor Morgan Fray which she idolized. As you play the game there are some sections in between matches that assume the point of view of Kara, and you can explore and read some items that will slowly reveal the story and world. This is a more engaging and non intrusive way of telling a story rather than boring cutscenes, especially considering that it is an action game we are talking about. Allied with that you have beautiful cell shaded graphics and an amazing soundtrack that ties everything together with flair and straight up AURA. I could keep going, but at this point you can see that I love this game very much. Go play it, coward.

This game is a must play for fans of the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater or Jet Set Radio games who also like third person shooters like Max Payne. Basically you have to clear stages by eliminating all enemies while on roller skates. You replenish ammo by doing tricks and you increase your combo multiplier by getting eliminations. On top of this you can also trigger slow motion at will. A very addictive gameplay loop. The cassette futurist style is also very cool. The game takes place in the 2030s but stylistically looks very 1970s retrofuturist. The story is told in brief first person segments. It's quite interesting but I won't spoil it. HOWEVER. The publishers (Take Two) shuttered this studio and laid everyone off despite the accolades the game received. So buying this game will not support the people who made it. So consider other means of playing it.

This is a spectacular, nigh-perfect game. Don't buy it. The developers of this masterpiece were laid off despite creating a Bafta winning 3D action title on their FIRST TRY. Watch the Raycevick video for more information if you're interested.

I'm conflicted: I only heard about Rollerdrome through a YouTube video essay detailing the corporate skulduggery after its release that resulted in the entire Roll7 team getting laid off (allegedly) but....this game is so unique, and difficult, and satisfying, and endlessly replayable. And that's before you get into the visuals and the music, which are the 1983est I've felt since, well, 1983. This feels like a labour of love and the team deserved far better. I should stand by my principles but I can't stop playing it...

Love the art style. Very fun gameplay loop. Fun to go back and play old stages and complete challenges once you've gotten better at the game and unlocked more weapons. Pretty short story, i beat it in <5 hours while going back and doing some early levels again, but each level is well designed and its got a solid difficulty curve. Now that I've completed the main story I have the Out For Blood mode to still play. Very fun arcade-style game thats great for short sessions. ♥♥♥♥ Take-Two for laying off the entire Roll7 studio.
