Sea Salt is a darkly imaginative and deliberately unsettling indie title that stands out by asking players to embrace the role of the monster rather than the hero. Developed and published by YCJY Games, the game draws heavily from Lovecraftian themes and gothic horror, presenting a world where humanity’s refusal to honor ancient pacts has dire consequences. Instead of resisting cosmic terror, you embody it, commanding eldritch forces as an ancient god of the sea bent on retribution. This reversal of perspective gives Sea Salt a distinctive identity that shapes every aspect of its gameplay and atmosphere. The premise centers on the awakening of Dagon, an ancient deity denied the sacrifices once promised by humankind. In response, you unleash vengeance upon coastal towns, cities, and sacred sites, leading waves of cultists and grotesque sea-born creatures into battle. The narrative is sparse but effective, conveyed through short interludes, tarot cards, and symbolic imagery rather than heavy exposition. This approach reinforces the mythic tone of the experience, making the story feel like a half-remembered legend rather than a conventional plot. The simplicity of the narrative works in the game’s favor, allowing the focus to remain on mood, symbolism, and the slow escalation of divine wrath. Gameplay blends real-time action with light strategic elements, centering on the management of a growing horde. You begin with a small group of followers and gradually unlock new apostles, units, and monstrous entities as you progress. Each unit type has a clear role, whether it is absorbing damage, dealing heavy blows, or swarming enemies through sheer numbers. Battles unfold in contained arenas where human forces attempt to repel your advance using fire, fortifications, and coordinated attacks. Success depends less on precise micromanagement and more on positioning, timing, and choosing the right composition of horrors for each encounter. Control over your army is intentionally loose, emphasizing the chaotic nature of commanding inhuman forces. Orders are issued broadly, and your minions often behave unpredictably, surging forward in a tide rather than responding with surgical precision. This design choice can be frustrating at times, particularly when units fail to avoid hazards or cluster poorly, but it also reinforces the thematic idea that you are directing a primal force rather than a disciplined army. Strategy emerges from learning how to work with this chaos—using terrain, overwhelming numbers, and well-timed retreats to break human defenses. Progression is tied to unlocking new apostles and creatures through collected cards, which adds a sense of long-term growth and experimentation. Different apostles can dramatically alter how battles play out, encouraging players to adjust their approach as new options become available. While the underlying structure of encounters remains consistent, the variety of units helps mitigate repetition and provides incentive to keep pushing forward. That said, the strategic layer remains relatively shallow compared to full-fledged strategy games, and players seeking deep tactical complexity may find the systems limited over extended play sessions. Visually, Sea Salt excels at atmosphere. Its pixel-art style is dark, textured, and evocative, filled with unsettling animations and grotesque creature designs that bring its horror themes to life. Environments are steeped in gloom, with muted color palettes and oppressive architecture that make human settlements feel fragile and doomed. The sound design further enhances immersion, combining ominous music with unsettling effects that underscore the sense of cosmic inevitability. Together, the audiovisual elements do much of the heavy lifting, making the act of unleashing destruction feel weighty and ominous rather than merely chaotic. Ultimately, Sea Salt is a game driven more by mood and concept than by mechanical depth. Its strengths lie in its bold thematic commitment, striking presentation, and the novelty of playing as an eldritch god commanding monstrous followers. Its weaknesses stem from occasional control frustrations and a gameplay loop that can feel repetitive once its systems are fully revealed. Even so, for players drawn to dark fantasy, Lovecraftian imagery, and unconventional perspectives, Sea Salt offers a memorable experience that lingers less because of what you do moment to moment and more because of the unsettling role it invites you to inhabit. Perhaps one of the most beautiful depictions of tarot I've ever seen in a videogame. The core mechanic of drawing a card is paralleled by this masterfully appropriate score. Between the music and the incredible cutscenes, this game is no doubt one of my favorite of all time. Grasping at masterpiece.

Surprising amount of depth. Found myself having to use a different strategy every level. Only complaint is that black cats get stuck in walls often(which sucks because they are VERY useful)

Nice game, however, for some reason I feel like it overstays its welcome.. Sometimes the mobs can get stuck, which makes them useless in an area. Very nice pixelart, music, tone and vibe of the game.

After I bought Keep Driving by YCJY Games, decided to support developers team by purchasing all their games in deluxe edition and I am extremely happy by my choice. Sea Salt is an atmospheric blend of horror and strategy, with a recognizable visual style that immediately grabs you.The dark art by Josef Martinovsky is heavily inspired by Mike Mignola, gives the game a moody, gothic feel that perfectly complements its eerie Lovecraftian aesthetics. Controlling a swarm of eldritch horrors to wipe out humanity is both unique and incredibly satisfying. The main musical theme perfectly fits into the game.Setting the perfect tone for the creeping dread that unfolds. Despite the grim setting, the amusing, garbled voices of the NPCs add an unexpected charm and fun, lol. If you enjoy dark aesthetics, strategic gameplay, and a bit of cosmic terror (with a touch of humor), this game is definitely a MUST-PLAY!
