Oct. 2025
Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus, developed by Tamsoft and published by XSEED Games and Marvelous, is an unapologetically over-the-top brawler that combines fast-paced, anime-inspired combat with an unmistakably provocative aesthetic. Originally released on the PlayStation Vita before making its way to PC, it stands as one of the most defining entries in the Senran Kagura franchise—an eccentric series that embraces absurdity, charm, and chaos in equal measure. The game doesn’t shy away from its identity; it’s a mixture of genuine mechanical fun and tongue-in-cheek fanservice, offering something both playful and self-aware. Beneath the skimpy outfits and comical exaggerations lies a surprisingly robust beat-’em-up that succeeds at being entertaining, even if it’s not particularly deep. The narrative framework of Shinovi Versus revolves around four rival shinobi academies, each with its own roster of female warriors. Every school has its ideology and backstory, creating a web of rivalries that drive the game’s campaign. The structure is segmented into four main storylines, one for each faction, and each tells its own version of events through a blend of visual novel-style dialogue sequences and explosive battles. While the story often dips into melodrama and comedy, it also carries moments of genuine character development, exploring the girls’ aspirations, rivalries, and loyalties. The writing is lighthearted, with a heavy dose of self-awareness, and though it never takes itself too seriously, it manages to make each character memorable through humor and exaggerated emotion. Combat is the centerpiece, and it captures the essence of a fast, fluid, and accessible brawler. Each character has a distinct fighting style, weapon type, and set of combos, ensuring variety across the 20-plus playable fighters. Battles unfold in open 3D arenas where players string together light and heavy attacks, air juggles, and special moves to overwhelm waves of enemies or duel against rival shinobi. The controls are smooth and responsive, making it easy for newcomers to enjoy while offering enough depth for more experienced players to experiment with different characters. Transformations—activated mid-battle through a burst of energy—grant temporary stat boosts and new moves, while the “clothing destruction” system doubles as both a gameplay indicator and a trademark feature of the series. As the fight progresses, characters’ outfits tear away with each hit, serving as a mix of comedy and spectacle that defines the series’ irreverent tone. Visually, Shinovi Versus benefits from its transition to PC. The higher resolution, stable frame rate, and cleaner textures make the colorful character models stand out far better than on its handheld origins. Each fighter is meticulously detailed, with fluid animations that highlight the game’s kinetic energy. The environments, while limited in variety, are bright and serve as fitting backdrops for the action. The camera occasionally struggles to keep up with the chaos, especially during crowded fights, but it rarely detracts from the overall flow. The soundtrack reinforces the game’s personality—a mix of upbeat electronic battle themes and traditional Japanese motifs that perfectly match the mixture of comedy and intensity that defines the experience. While Shinovi Versus offers a satisfying burst of fun in short sessions, it’s not without repetition. The mission design, though energetic, often follows the same pattern: fight groups of enemies, face a rival shinobi, watch a cutscene, and repeat. The variety lies primarily in the characters rather than in the objectives or level design. However, the large cast and their individualized move sets help to keep things fresh for players who enjoy experimenting. The game also includes multiplayer, allowing up to four players to battle online or locally, though the online community has dwindled over time. When active, multiplayer matches add an exciting layer of unpredictability, as players clash in frantic free-for-alls filled with special attacks and comedic chaos. Tonally, Shinovi Versus is as polarizing as it is distinctive. Its unabashed embrace of fanservice—complete with exaggerated character designs, suggestive humor, and playful innuendo—sets it apart from more conventional action games. This aspect is central to its appeal but also the reason it alienates some players. For those who approach it with an understanding of its over-the-top intent, it becomes clear that the game isn’t trying to shock but to celebrate its absurdity. The developers lean into the humor, balancing the sexualized imagery with genuine warmth and camaraderie among the characters. It’s a game that thrives on contradiction—equal parts silly and sincere, ridiculous and surprisingly heartfelt. Despite its flaws, Shinovi Versus succeeds because it knows exactly what it wants to be. It’s not a technical masterpiece or a deeply strategic fighter, but it’s fast, flashy, and unashamedly fun. The blend of anime aesthetics, accessible combat, and playful tone creates a distinct experience that’s hard to find elsewhere. For fans of the Senran Kagura series, it represents a high point in terms of both content and personality. For newcomers, it serves as an entry point into a world that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still offers genuine entertainment. In the end, Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus is a game of excess—of action, energy, and attitude. It celebrates style over subtlety, and in doing so, crafts a uniquely enjoyable, if divisive, experience. It’s a title that revels in its absurdity while still delivering a satisfying combat system that rewards fast reactions and experimentation. For those willing to embrace its eccentricity, it provides a surprisingly polished and enjoyable action romp filled with humor, charm, and relentless energy. It may not appeal to everyone, but it remains a confident, unapologetic entry in the anime brawler genre, defined as much by its outrageous personality as by the fun at its core. Rating: 9/10

It is a fun hack and slash that often enough goes on sale for sub $10 AUD The game is really unbalanced with some of the cast as some are fully busted to play and the others are really hard to win with but you can still beat each story easy enough This is also the same game as what was on the Vita so if you played that it is much easier to put this on your PC handheld then the Vita version

It's a battle between different fighting schools made up entirely of girls, and the game as a whole is rather repetitive with little variation. Aside from the attack moves and transformations being different, all the characters play basically the same way, with their attack and defence strategies being the same. The flow of all the levels is also the same, as you make your way through the levels, defeating all the enemies at fixed locations and then beating your opponents until they're down to their underwear. Speaking of underwear, because there's a lot of sexual innuendo of an anime nature here, you get to see a lot of underwear, a lot of skin, and of course jiggling breasts squeezed into very small tops. I didn't finish the game because it gets boring after a while, and at some point you get bored with the underwear and breasts. But objectively speaking, this game is a 3/10 at best because it's technically a good port, but the game relies too much on breasts and underwear.

Man, I'm REALLY not beating the allegations with a review of Senran Kagura, of all games. If my name wasn't already mud for reviewing such cultured titles as "Oppai Succubus Academy", this would be the review that sends me hurtling deep down into the pit of despair where all the most reviled anime lechers lie - the Minoru Minetas, the Teruteru Hanamuras, the Master Roshis and the Parco "Chichi wo Moge" Folgores of the world. But there's one important difference between Senran Kagura and your standard-issue smut: there's a good game here. Some would even say a great one. So what's this about, anyways? Taking place after the events of Senran Kagura: Burst on the 3DS (if you want the lowdown on that story, buy up Burst ReNewal, the remake), Shinovi Versus centers on an end-of-the-year competition called the "Shinobi Battle Royale". Win, and you and your school of ninjas get to keep your honor. Lose, and, like the left side of Prince Zuko's face, it all goes up in flames. There's a fun, punchily-written story all throughout, and each of the four shinobi schools (Hanzo, Gessen, Hebijo, and the unlockable Crimson Squad) gets their own campaign. Think of each school as having its own "timeline": Hebijo's story, for instance, is the darkest and leads to a lot of major characters getting ambiguously killed off, but that doesn't happen in the other stories. The writing is always doing this delicate balance of silliness and seriousness, a bit like the Yin-Yang-Flash modes you have to balance when you play. Is the gameplay any good? I'd say so! If you've played a musou game before (Dynasty Warriors, Hyrule Warriors, etc.), you'll feel right at home in Senran Kagura: beat up hordes of ninja enemies and whale on named characters with elaborate skill trees. There are actually three skill trees for each character, if you can believe that! There's Flash mode (which you start in), and then you have the option to switch to Yang mode by doing a magical girl-esque Shinobi Transformation, or switch to Yin mode by breaking out of your uniform and fighting in nothing but a swimsuit. And there are 22 characters, so that's technically 66 different skill trees, all in one game! No small feat. Also, and this is REALLY important if you want to get your friends into this franchise: you also get the option to toggle all the really sleazy, gratuitous shots on and off if you go into the system settings. That's right - you can play Shinovi Versus COMPLETELY CLEAN, if you prefer. I definitely recommend this option if you're here for gaming instead of gooning. P.S. - I don't have a controller for Steam, so I should probably mention one downside: the controls. They're odd. And the keybinds will lie to you and tell you to press completely different keys. Check out the Estival Versus guide if you get too puzzled.
