This game is best described as a mix between Doom and Borderlands. The fusion of insanely fast, over-the-top FPS gameplay with RPG mechanics makes Shadow Warrior 2 a huge departure from previous installments in the series. While the story is pretty weak and the humor is often cringe-worthy, the game was honestly a blast to play through. It features a large array of incredibly detailed and highly destructible environments to explore—most of which are procedurally generated, with the exception of story mission levels, which are hand-crafted. There’s a decent amount of side quests and story missions to complete, along with free DLC that adds bonus challenges and even more weapon customization options. As for the enemy variety—it’s impressive. The game features a colorful and diverse cast of enemies, each with dismemberable limbs, which is a satisfying and fun touch. Unlike Borderlands, which relies on randomly generated weapons, Shadow Warrior 2 offers around 80 pre-set weapons. Each one can be customized with a seemingly infinite number of stat modifiers. Your character can also be deeply customized. There’s a wide range of stat modifiers, and you can allocate skill points to level up specific abilities found throughout the game. Honestly, I spent just as much time figuring out my build as I did playing the game—and it was genuinely enjoyable. The game is on the shorter side, even if you complete all the optional content. However, there are multiple difficulty levels to choose from, plus a New Game Plus mode that adds replay value. There’s also a co-op feature, which I played for most of my time with the game. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work very well. The multiplayer loading screens are painfully long, and completed quests only register for the host. This meant we had to replay every mission multiple times so everyone in the group could stay on the same progression path. As a result, we were often hilariously over-leveled. Other frustrating elements include the fact that only the host can trigger key events—like picking up quest items, opening doors, or spawning enemies. Despite these fairly significant flaws, I never once regretted buying Shadow Warrior 2. Its over-the-top gameplay and deceptively deep RPG systems delivered a surprisingly engaging and fun experience.

Some games take themselves too seriously. Shadow Warrior 2 takes a katana, slices that seriousness in half, and laughs while reloading an electrified shotgun. Foul-mouthed, wisecracking, and unapologetically violent. But underneath the jokes and over-the-top gore? There’s a damn good shooter hiding here. It’s not just shoot or slash, it’s both. It’s ripping demons apart with a chainsaw katana, then double-jumping off a rooftop to snipe a robot ninja mid-air. It’s looting, crafting, modding, and then drowning the whole system in blood and explosions. Yeah, the story’s wild. Yeah, the tone’s unhinged. But that’s the point.

Tremendous graphics with a fantastic art style. Tons of particle effects, body dismemberment into a dozen pieces, explosive environments, explosive weaponry, elemental effects, auras, weather effects which affect the foliage as well as everything else in the environment. - No DLSS - No frame generation - No Unreal Trashgine 5 - No TAA smudgyness And yet, runs buttery smooth at 75 fps with v-sync with no drops whatsoever on Ryzen 2600x and a graphics card with 4 gigabytes. What in the fuck happened to gaming in the past 8 years? In terms of gameplay, everything just feels polished and satisfying. The problem is that these developers are kind of notoriously bad when it comes to balancing, especially when it comes to enemy sponginess. I played solely on the "hardest difficulty" and the early game was by far the toughest "challenge" because you simply lack the means to kill shit effectively. However, after leveling up a bunch of times, boosting a ton of stats and setting up all the elemental effects on a multitude of weapons, it kind of became a breeze. After beating about half of the game, I realized that there were some "insanity" levels on top of the baseline difficulty which boosts enemies even further and gives stronger rewards. You can tweak this at will. Treat this game and its difficulty philosophy as if it was an ARPG (which in essence it kind of is) and if you're not as stubborn as I was, do yourself a favor and boost your starting character on something a bit lower and then switch the difficulties upwards when you feel like it's time. All in all, this is an extremely satisfying game with beautiful visuals which will keep you hooked for a long time. If you are looking to mindlessly slay all sorts of robotic and demonic creatures with myriad satisfying weapons, this is it. Oh, and if you don't like guns much, it is completely viable to build into a melee play style entirely. Best 3 bucks I have EVER spent by far.

Pretty decent game which starts fantastic but turns stale in midgame when you almost oneshot enemies thanks to items you collect through Side Missions and Bounty Hunts but on the other hand It's pretty good change of pace from Shadow Warrior (2013) when some enemies were pain in the ass.
