April 2025
When I moved countries, I had to buy a game to change my billing address (because that makes sense). Uncertain of which one to buy, I went to browse Markiplier's old videos and came across this particular one. I vaguely remembered enjoying watching it and that he didn't finish it himself so I might as well explore the ending myself. Oh boy, did the twists of fate deliver me AN ABSOLUTE GEM! I found myself hooked immediately and got around 70 hours and almost all achievements in 3 weeks. Then I took a break from gaming for a bit and now I just finished my final achievements. This game is hands down one of my all-time favourite games EVER. Don't let the bulges of text scare you off because every single one might make you burst out in laughter. Discover the endless magic this world holds. Name your China porcelain hat Lasagna. Whatever you do, DO NOT let this game pass you by! I can finally say I got my first 100%. Although there is still (somehow) some content I haven't seen yet, I probably won't boot this up again. Now I can live on with the thought in my mind that this universe is truly endless and it shall never be fully explored. Shadows over Loathing, you have a special place in my heart.

Hilarious and fun! However, I am concerned about racial bias because every single character in this game is white.

This game has helped me learn something. Besides being a charming, entertaining, and funny game, it also rewards you for looking just that little bit closer. Just walking up to a random trash can, then it suddenly gives you 3 xp and a can of tuna or keep on bugging the narrator and the characters makes it all the more fun to play...and after playing this, I found myself slowing down. Enjoying things more. Both in video games, and outside of it. I know this probably doesn't apply to everyone, but I thought I'd just share why I like the game (and West of Loathing) so much. (I've still a lot more to find out in this game) TL:DR Fun(ny), charming, entertaining game. Made me enjoy small things more and slow down

I think this is the most funny game of all time. It doesn’t necessarily include the funniest thing in a video game, but it has the largest amount of funny moments in any game. Except for the games with really high replayability, that could potentially continue to be funny for thousands of hours, which isn’t even really a fair comparison. Out of all the finite single player games, this game has the most funny moments. But even this statement doesn’t accurately represent the funniness present in this game, the number of funny moments is only half of it, the average magnitude of each funny moment is great too. This game has the largest average magnitude funniness of all video games, in addition to having the largest funnies per minute of any video game. Except, even this statement, is an inaccurate portrayal. There are games with very infrequent but incredibly funny moments that have an average funniness higher than the jokes present in West of Loathing, and there are games that sacrifice the average funniness of its funny moments for the sake of having many more slightly funny moments. What Shadows over Loathing does that is special is balance out these two factors. Imagining a graph where one axis is funny frequency and one axis is funny magnitude, Shadows over Loathing’s coordinates on this graph functioning as the vertex on a rectangle which also had a vertex at 0,0 would have the largest area of any game.
