Shantae and the Seven Sirens is an alright game. The animated cutscenes are really pretty, the voice acting was a nice upgrade from previous games, but it just didn't feel really "Shantae." The transformations felt rather boring, because rather than getting a wide variety of silly animals to turn into it's way more limited. You get a frog to do underwater traversal later in the game (although the underwater sections don't feel too complex), you get a drill shellfish to dig through dirt, a lizard that feels worse than the monkey, etc. The game switches to using other genies' dances rather than transformations, which is unique but feels less fun on the whole. While this game is visually an upgrade from previous games, the mechanics just felt less fun to use. The world wasn't as fun to retrace either, which is a big issue for a metroidvania. And the fan-service for any female character is honestly crazy, but I guess that's to be expected for Shantae. Overall it's a mixed review leaning slightly towards positive, so that's why it's recommended. I had some fun with it!
Decent game, but has a hard time against competition due to a bad first impression. I am someone who loves Metroidvanias. I am also someone who enjoys the Shantae series. This game being both has a lot to live up to as a result. Unfortunately, while it is definitely a good game with a lot of charm, it just does not stack up to its peers. The main thing that really bugs me is the lack of autosave, which I find an incredibly baffling design choice especially for the genre that it is in. This makes it so you have to run to the nearest old man whenever you make the slightest bit of progress, be it collecting something or defeating a major boss. and if you die on your way to the old man, tough ****, you are fighting Risky Boots yet again. In the late game, this is less of an issue as you will have plenty of options to keep yourself alive, the health to tank the hits, and abilities to deal with threats efficiently. but in the early game, especially if you're new to Shantae, this issue STINGS, and made me nearly drop the game out of frustration. However, as I mentioned, the mid-to-late game is definitely when this game becomes more enjoyable thanks to you having more abilities and combat becoming more dynamic (granted that is something to be expected from a metroidvania, but the difference in quality between the early and late game feels especially noticable). Is this game good? Yes. Is this game great? no. would I recommend this game? To a Shantae fan, yes. But to a Metroidvania fan, I would say there are better options that have a better early game.
This is a Shantae. It's great because of it's simplicity, anime style and dumb jokes. It reminds me of the miniclip games era, and I love it. Between AAA billion dollar games and +100 hours game I reaaaaally needed a rest like this one to truly be able to enjoy games in general once more. Well done Shantae, never change!
