"It's fiction... it's fiction... it's fiction... we made it up." Sickly Days and Summer Traces (which isn't the real title by the way. The real title is a bit spicier), is a visual novel developed by Sister Position, about a brother taking care (in more ways than one) of his sick sister, and pursuing happiness together. Depending on a certain condition, this game can be very wholesome or very lewd. The positives in this game are pretty straightforward. The art direction is very detailed and gorgeous, character design is on the cute side (which makes me think this is a moege VN), the voice acting is textbook Japanese quality and some of the tracks are catchy, and they are fairly tone and context consistent, but it's obvious that the devs reused some tracks for scenes that they weren't intended for. The gameplay is not what you would expect on a visual novel like this one. You can control the main character in a small map which represents the house, and you can do a wide assortment of events, which you can do in a non-linear fashion. The main objective is to raise Asumi's max HP by completing activities, so she can pass the doctor's check-ups. There are five check-ups, and anytime Asumi pass one, you can do higher tier activities (though you can unlock them even if you are in a lower tier, you just can't do the activity. You have a time limit until Asumi's check up, which increases in higher tiers. Each activity takes a day and consumes a certain amount of HP. The name of the game is to juggle time and HP consumption so you can complete the objectives set by the doctor. You can also do activities which increases the amount of HP restored by resting. If you installed the adult patch, there will be H events, which consumes higher HP than regular activities, but greatly increases max HP. But there is also the happiness metric, which decides which ending you'll get. There are three endings in total, but the true ending cannot be achieved without postponing the exam (which you can do up to three times in total, and all of them are required for the true ending). In relation with the H events, there are several which fits a theme, like outdoor sex or bondage, there are H events that don't fit into a theme, and there are H events you can redo as many times as you want (they're color-coded). And, in relation to events, there is also Asumi's status. She can be normal, tired, sick, happy and horny (this last one only applies if you have the patch installed). Each of them affects HP requirements to do any event, except for the horny state, which reduces HP requirements by 50% only in H events. Normal state doesn't provide any effects. There is a surprising amount of depth to the gameplay for a visual novel, and it kept me fairly engaged in raising max HP and happiness. But there are a few downsides to note: first, since events can be done non-linearly, there are instances where the writing becomes non-sensical, especially after unlocking the first H scene, because the characters act like they were never intimate, despite the fact that they already are. This messes up with continuity. Secondly, events cannot be failed. This means that the activity goes on without the player participating in the outcome of the event, which removes an element of challenge from the gameplay. And the writing? I think this is a very easy story to write, with a very simple plot and basic character motivations, but they do the job, for the most part, because there are issues. Something I would've appreciated is that there was a main quest/side quest format, so I could choose to follow a main storyline, which would have facilitated character arcs to be introduced, which leads to the main writing issue this game has. Since this is the story of a very non-conventional brother/sister relationship, the true feelings for each other could have led to an interesting storyline full of conflict, tension and drama. Maybe the brother doesn't know how to make of his feelings for his sister, debating between his morals and his desires, which could create conflict between him and her, and it's absolutely possible to have the event system tied with character development and relationship progression. Perhaps a bit more time in the oven could have benefitted this game. In conclusion, this is a good but could be better visual novel. The gameplay is basic but oddly rewarding, and all artistic aspects are well done. And there are a quite an amount of fetishes to be explored. And, on that note, if you are one of those people who can't tell reality from fiction, stay the hell away from this visual novel, because you WILL be offended by this game, especially with the adult patch installed (which I highly recommend to do if you're a person of culture). For all other readers, I can confidently recommend this game to you. The writing isn't bad, but it could be better, but, since there are any overly egregious writing issues in this game, then I won't make a fuss out of it.

Let's dive into "Sickly Days and Summer Traces." So, you've got this setup where you're taking your sick sister out to the countryside, which is a pretty unique premise. Now, obviously, there are two versions of this game: censored and uncensored, and let's be real, most people checking this out are probably in it for the H-game aspects. But here's the surprise: underneath all the p0rn, there's actually a pretty decent story trying to unfold, and the whole "sims" element of the gameplay loop is genuinely half-fun, which keeps you hooked. I gotta say, the character backgrounds really drew me in. The mom's story, in particular, completely caught me off guard and was genuinely pretty sad – like, hit you right in the feels. I also loved the whole setting, just you two relying on each other to get by in the countryside. The gameplay loop of building things up isn't just about making yourselves stronger, it's also about improving your sister's health and happiness, which is a neat balance. It takes a little bit to get the hang of it, but it works, because you can't push her too hard, or she ends up back in the hospital and it's game over. That adds a nice layer of tension. Now, about those H-scenes: yeah, they're definitely there. If you play the uncensored version, they are very, very vivid, no two ways about it. For what they are, they're good, but honestly, by the end of it, I found myself more invested in the actual story and the character backstories, which is wild for an H-game. It's not what you expect, right? Of course, it's not all perfect. There are some goofy bits, like the doctor looking like she's ten years old, which is just plain stupid. And the humor can be a bit uneven; sometimes it's genuinely funny, but other times it's just super cheesy, straight-out-of-an-anime kind of humor that doesn't quite land. Overall though, it's a genuine surprise how touching (no pun intended, really!) this game can be at times, especially when paired with a somewhat decent and fun gameplay loop. On the flipside, let's be honest, 90% of you are probably just getting this to JO/Flicky Flick, so you're probably ignoring me anyway, lol. Still, I'd give it a solid 7/10.

Don't worry about my playtime, I have already bought and played this on dlsite. This visual novel accomplished everything that it has set out to do: It's a pure fluffy SoL with some emotional moments in-between, god-tier art, pretty good music, lovable characters, and last but not least, some fairly kinky H-scenes if you are into that kind of things. The true ending is pretty strict in term of time limit and will require some savescumming. 10/10 would recommend
