Has some interesting spritework, controls feel allright I suppose. Story kinda feels like a middle schooler's fantasy, like think unironic metalocolypse blood and gore but none of the humor. Overall it's something I would give a neutral rating to if Steam had one, as is? I'd probably say 80%, don't pay more than 3-4 bucks.

This is a difficult 2D action platformer. If you want a challenge I recommend this game. It has great heavy metal music in a heavy metal world. I recommend this game for those people that want a challenging experience. Once I beat the game, it felt great.

So I've just decided to reinstall this little gem as the new Valfaris game has come out and I wanted to play through all three games together... Slain came out first, then Valfaris and now a sequel is out...Slain is more melee based and is comparable to a game like Volgarr The Viking. The controls and combat are meaningful and slow. You must plan every move and know your moveset inside out. If you die a lot it's because you're not thinking of something. It is brutal in it's execution but each moment is built to make you think about to approach it best. Just don't stick to one way of resolving combat. You will need to learn the parry. You will need to use magic...just don't be stubborn otherwise you'll make this game near impossible. Very rewarding but requires a lot of patience. For those who like a challenge... P.S. There are minor amounts of BS scattered through out the game. The game loves to throw you into close quarters with a lot of enemies around you (there's beautiful contact damage here so enjoy!) Then, to spice it up, they'll put some ranged filth behind the oncoming enemies forcing you to time your attacks and not make any mistakes. Learn by death exists far too much but each one of these situations just requires you to adapt. Do not forget that returning projectiles will stun allowing for a heavy death blow follow up. And don't forget to change your weapon buff to match the enemies. I also found my inputs getting lost at important times...press your jump button and attack button with intent otherwise the game will stitch you up!! 7/10

This is a solid game , in my humble oppinion. Story is ok, gameplay is where it shines. Beware: you will die hundreds of times. I loved the soundtrack. Reaching a checkpoint feels very rewarding, but could take 50 tries sometimes. The game is dark with a gothik atmosphere. Plays very well with a controller - for a chill gaming session. Overall I would give it 8/10 perhaps. A very solid game!
