Very fun Survivors style game with a lot of personality and humour. There are so many hidden interactions and combos. The fact that it isn't really explained adds to the satisfaction of finding something new. Yes, on controller "hold button to X" controls are a bit annoying. Stop being such a puny human!
This game is a banger! You have to get familiar with all of the game mechanics, though! This is where a lot of bad reviews come from. Most of these reviews underestimate how many game mechanics there are to get ahead in the game. I just found out about a lot of them by accident. Things could just be explained better, but that’s like wanting a strategy game to tell you what strategy would be the best, which would miss the whole point of having to find the perfect strategy in a video game in general. This game is a lot of fun if you know what you’re doing, but you have to use your brain!
I was stuck on level 10 for quite some time. This is not a bad place to be -- it's the best level for farming DNA, and very good for XP -- every failure unlocked a card -- but the experience wasn't great: I could do the level itself fine, and then the green flowers that spawned with the boss would surround and murder me, and I couldn't do enough damage to make a real dent in them. I got through by seeing a video of someone playing the game in a completely different way: it seems a limited number of enemies can spawn at a time, so if you wait for the chainsaw enemies to spawn en masse, then flee to the opposite side of the map and kite them in a circle, much fewer enemies will spawn in front of you. If you repeat until the boss spawns, you get a wave of green enemies with the boss, then birds spawning for a while, then a wave of flowerpeople, and then eventually they stop spawning and you can kill the remnants and the boss. I found the rest of the levels far easier, including the "yes, this is possible" level 13, which I trounced with lasers. As more cards unlocked I saw more things I could have done -- the "Trash Throwing" card gives the laser 8x damage, which does 1200 damage, and together with the "shot" and "targeted" bonuses tears through the damage sponges. Having 5 level 3 darkness cards unlocks an upgrade that gives darkness cards +100% damage, which again is enough to tear through them. Still, all of these needed cards I didn't have unlocked when I first encountered the level. There are some controls I didn't see noted anywhere -- in the shop you can tap space to restock, or hold to upgrade, enter buys, the A and D keys navigate through the cards, and escape exits. F locks / unlocks. I liked the achievement variety and how it encouraged different playstyles. It would have been nice if Black Swordsmen showed up somewhere else than failing to kill the boss on level 6, but making a deck that can only kill extremely close enemies and running away from the boss was also interesting, though I did have to play the level a few times. I would have appreciated options to reduce the opacity of the attacks / enemies, as you see on other games like this. At the end it can get rather busy and hard to spot bonuses in the crowd.
TL;DR: Slime 3K: Rise Against Despot is a brilliant, "slimy" hidden gem that evolves the bullet-heaven genre with deep deck-building strategy. While it suffers from late-game frame drops and a frustratingly limited deck-save system, its addictive synergy-based combat and top-tier soundtrack make it a 9/10 "must-play" for fans of the genre. It’s an unhinged, high-energy "bullet heaven" that manages to be more than just another Vampire Survivors clone. By blending deck-building mechanics with meat-grinding action, it creates a strategic depth that most "survivor-likes" completely lack. The Gameplay Loop Deckbuilding Meets Meat-Grinding: The game isn't just about moving around; it’s about crafting the perfect "bloodbath loadout." Learning the synergies—whether you need to be a fast-shooting machine, a hardy summoner, or a tanky beast—is incredibly rewarding. Level 10, in particular, is a masterclass in forcing you to optimize for specific damage types and AOE targets. Skill-Based Progression: Despite the "roguelite" label, the game relies on your design skills rather than pure RNG. The waves and abilities are predetermined; your success depends on how well you build your deck and move through the chaos. The Frustrations The "5-Deck" Limit: This is the game's biggest design flaw. Being limited to only five decks is genuinely baffling. Having to constantly rebuild your deck just to test a new synergy isn't "part of the fun"—it's busywork. It feels like a missed opportunity to let players experiment more freely. Performance Issues: While it runs beautifully for most of the game, things fall apart near the end of high-level runs. When the screen floods with thousands of puny humans, the frame rate craters and the game can freeze, which is a death sentence in a bullet hell where your health can vanish in seconds. Why It’s a Hidden Gem Quality vs. Trends: This publisher/developer clearly doesn't chase trends. They just make what they think is fun, and it shows. The music and sound effects are top-tier, the balance is tight, and the price point (especially on sale) is a steal. Hidden Potential: I truly believe that if this team just polished these minor pain points, it would be a breakout hit. As it stands, it’s a beautiful, slimy, hidden gem that deserves a much larger audience. Final Thoughts Slime 3K is one of the best indie games I've bought in ages. It’s fun, challenging, and perfectly paced for quick sessions—even if the performance dips and deck management annoyances keep it from being absolutely perfect. It reminds me why I love supporting smaller developers: they take risks that the "AAAA" studios are too afraid to touch.
