Dec. 2025
Let it be on the record that I love a really ambitious game. And, by any standard, this game is really ambitious! That there's basically only one developer makes this insane. But I'm not gonna lie, this game is not for everyone. It's rough in places, mostly voice and consistent UX. The game does take pains to introduce you to all the systems through its campaign, which brings in each new piece one at a time as a form of extremely extended tutorial, which is to its enormous credit. Because, frankly, there's a lot, any one of which would make a fine game in its own right: To date, I've engaged in infantry combat, space-fighter combat, space exploration, space warfare with 50 fighters at a time. There might be capital ships, there is very likely to be largescale infantry combat, and the game leans on the notion of eventually doing galactic conquest and building up my own economy. There's atmospheric flight, procedural "dungeons", endemic wildlife, sprawling cities. But if you take pause and consider all of these things and how few developers there were, you might wonder if any cracks are showing. There are a lot. And, bluntly, if I went through the various issues I've found so far, I might run out of space. I'm still playing this and I don't want to focus on the negatives, but I do need to bring up a few that got me. 1: If you care about the plot, you'd need to have played the original game I think. The game brings up all these plot points early on which don't make any sense whatsoever. Well, it soon doesn't matter. 2: The voice acting is... spurious. One of the NPCs is literally voiced with text-to-speech. Your space general fellow (the middle-of-the-road guy) has two radically different voices, one a lantern-jawed gruff-as-hell fella, the other the cowboyest cowboy that ever wrangled a space-steer this side of the Rio Space Grande. A lot of flavour audio feels submitted by devoted fans, and I hope that's the correct interpretation. Along that same vein, while you can play as a male or female character, what plot lines there are were voiced only by the male. I don't know if later lines were voiced at all or are simply mute, but still. My "commander's child" is a lady and she whips so much ass that it IS funny. 3: So much of this winds up being really generic. I mean, no surprise, there's so much procedural generation. 4: Levels . Your character has levels in infantry and space combat. Equipment and ship upgrades also have levels, and you can't equip stuff above your level. Your enemies also have levels which determine how effective they are. Go into a combat against some space pirates too much above your level and you'll get wrecked, despite having gear that just wiped out a major army. (Why the pirates don't wipe the army out themselves, I can't say. Reasons. ). Levels sort of make sense in the context of a "journey of the hero" in a fantasy setting, as they represent growing skill and endurance. But they're also, in my arrogant opinion, a bit of a crutch for game design and nothing wrecks a sense of immersion than showing up to a new batch of pirates, looking the same as the old batch, and getting wrecked because of "levels". Are levels that different than skills? YES. This game is enormously level-based and dispenses with them for story missions anyway, so how necessary are they, really? I get some people get their endorphin kicks out of number-get-bigger but it feels like stretching out a good meatball with a lot of filler. Yeah, you have more meatballs, but mine are way better. On the whole, this game has a lot for you to do, a lot of little pools you can dip your toes into. Much like Elite Dangerous, this game is extremely wide, wide as the ocean itself. Also like Elite Dangerous, it's not very deep. But if you're not put off by that, want a game that gives you the fantasy of conquering a galaxy in a rather hands-on sort of way, and really need to get your not-too-far-future scifi on, you could easily do a lot worse. It's a decent xmas present to yourself. Okay, also, if you're down here, you're my kind of person. You read things! It's kind of rare, you know. So I just thought I'd mention I've got a curator and I stream stuff, both of which are linked in my profile. I hate self-promotion with the blazing itch of an STD, but you know, if I don't do any at all, eh. You know. So you'd do be a bit of a solid if you looked.

Feels like a cross between KOTOR and Mass Effect with some of the better parts of Elite Dangerous mixed in, a health mix of ground and ship combat and both are fairly well done. Standard fare of merchant/bounty hunter/miner/etc. In terms of gameplay, it's everything I ever hoped a space sim to be. Not state-of-the-art graphically, but not unplayable, the old charming indie game jank for those familiar. The dialog and story are pretty campy, but it's still enjoyable. There is some computer generated voice acting, but its actively being replaced and isn't disruptive. If I had known what this game was prior to it going on sale, it would have been an easy buy at $20. The dev has done an amazing job. Edit 11/21/2025: In response to the (undeserved) mixed review and issues voiced by the community since it's 11/19 release, the devs have already released 3 hotfixes to address most of these issues and continue to work on others.

A charming combination of space sim, rpg, and empire builder. Yeah, it's janky, yeah, there's heavy use of UE assets, but hey, this is exactly why they exist: so that one developer can create a grand space game like this. In my opinion, this solo dev has outdone what 1,000 devs did with Starfield. This is easily one of my favorite space games out there. Looking forward to the full release. The first Spacebourne is pretty good, too.

This game is amazing. It has everything you need from space sim and at the same time it does not have annoying parts like Elite Dangerous and othe sims. Games like Elite and SC usually overcomplicate things and make gamers spend hours to die 100 times to just understand core mechanics. While other space sims thinks that players should be astrophysicists, SpaceBourne just delivers general idea of a space sim without annoying amount of buttons and modes. What you have is: - a lot of star systems, travelling without loading screen, and landing on planets - ship combat, 3rd person combat - its an RPG, so you and your ship can evolve as you go - storyline and side missions. You can fire, you can mine asteroids, you can trade, you can scan and search But what I also want to see is more advanced ship management system and survival spects. It would be good if your ship had at least fuel tank and your character had to drink and eat. But it should be simple. I hope developers can add this in the future. Apart from it the game has everything I need.

This game is ROUGH like HELLA ROUGH but it's REALLY GOOD. Like imagine this someone made essentially everything you want from a space sim. Okay, maybe ALMOST everything you want and it's like done REALLY well but it lacks the polish you're used to from more thoroughly developed games? And I'm not talking gamebreaking bugs either, just like ROUGH animations, ROUGH rigging, ROUGH UI and ROUGH voice acting at times as well as ROUGH worldbuilding and storytelling. It's like rough in a way that it's not terrible or bad it's just like, you can tell someone obviously had enough experience to make something decent but lacked the intricate knowledge to just nail these parts. But apart from that? Ship combat is absolute nice, ground combat is a banger, even if movement itself is a bit ROUGH as well, everything is just so remarkably well done even though it is really damn rough not gonna lie. It's for me a first where I can say it's good enough for me to recommend it and also for me to say I wanna see this developer go farther with this but still rough enough to FULLY understand why it's got the EA label on it. Do not expect a fully polished game here, it's WELL done, INCREDIBLY so compared to other space games. But don't expect AAA quality cos this? You can see that this project started off with ONE guy. Kinda like Manor Lords tbh
