Born too late to explore the world. Born too early to explore space. Born just in time to explore a near perfect replica of the universe.

SpaceEngine gives me a feeling I can't accurately describe. It's like something between existential dread and nostalgia. As I drifted beyond our solar system, I watched our only home fade away and join the field of stars behind me. Then I wandered, clicking on a faint red dot which was an entire star system with its own planets. I opened the system viewer and singled out an airless terra, a world as big as our own but with the face of our moon. I landed on that dead world and pretended to walk on it. That was when I began to feel this feeling. For some reason, I felt as though I was returning to an old habit, revisiting an old hobby of drifting between the stars, like I had never called anywhere home before. I couldn't tell if it was somehow a memory of something I did before being born, or if I was seeing a glimpse into my own afterlife. I then had a keen awareness that I would die, and I somehow my consciousness would find itself among these same stars. This existentialism was different from what I felt before. The rising panic that I would usually feel was instead replaced with a wistful calm. I left that planet and drifted to its asteroid moon. I landed on it, and observed how the light from the planet and from the star made two shadows on the surface, as though I were standing in an outdoor set at night under two floodlamps back here on Earth. The feeling got stronger. Being so far from Sol, it felt like this was my new reality. For once, I didn't fear death. I couldn't, if it was going to be like this. And even if it won't be like this, at least I got to experience it. I decided to leave that star whose name I never bothered to write down. I watched the red dwarf fade away just like I did with Sol, and something in me kept begging me to go back. But I didn't. The memory of that planet was now just that: a memory. The star was gone now, and I kept going, and I knew then that I could never go back to that star. What seemed so permanent was now so fleeting. Our civilization won't last forever. Our species' future is not guaranteed. We live on time that we earned, not what we were granted. And what we did with that time was ensure that future generations would not have it as easy as we did, we who know what snow looks like, who almost never have to worry about water or where our waste went. Through greed, we altered our tiny speck of dust, putting it on a path that may not include us for much longer in its long, long life. Wandering the stars of the galaxy once more, I was now fully aware that each point of light was not just another world, but an entire collection of worlds. Fantastic landscapes and breathtaking sights all reduced to specks. I would never be able to experience all of it in my lifetime. But if I'm right, then I will have a trillion years to do so when I'm gone.

Best procedural galaxy creator out there, using official NASA and ESA data for continuous improvement. Watching a sun rise and fall on distant alien planet, the orbits of stars around a super massive black hole; visiting black spots on our sun, see the mountains on Mars - it's amazing in scope, scale and promises - which it delivers! If you want to just travel at light speed and see how nothing changes on big scales, or visit every planet in our solar system, you can do it! And of course, you can change the speed to >= c, so you get a bizarre view from an outer perspective on what we call the universe. Should be mandatory in high school!
