If you are unsure if you would enjoy the game then try the demo as that's the whole prepose of them to begin with. If you want to wait for a complete game then chances is that it'll not happen. That being said, I can say that even if there isn't a lot, I personally had fun with the game. People claim that this game is dead or abandoned, it's not, updates may be slow but it's only a one person team (if I'm remembering correctly) and they have other things to worry about along with the game. Steam says there has been no updates but that's for the main stable branch, current updates (slow as they are) are being made on the beta branch as to avoid a really buggy stable branch. My hours may be low but I really had fun playing this game. I may had only interacted with the dev once via a bug report email but they was fast with the response and made the fix in the next update when the report was sent. Even if the game never gets an update again, I'd be content with the current state of the game.
