♫ ɴᴏᴡ ᴘʟᴀʏɪɴɢ: Wayside - Ninajirachi How do you even describe this rhythm game if not as the ultimate way to feel like a real DJ? You find yourself behind a makeshift DJ deck, skillfully spinning the wheel, catching short beats, holding long notes, and nailing those perfect moments. The devs haven’t abandoned their baby and are actively working on improving the game, paying attention to even tiny details to make the project as polished as possible. Some obvious highlights are the bright yet totally chill visuals that really enhance the gameplay. The game also gives you solid customization options (for the genre): you can tweak note colors, design of the music tracks, and even the menu style. All of this unlocks as you play songs and rack up experience: the higher your rank, the more rewards you get. At the time of writing this review, the game’s music library has 75 tracks, not counting DLC. The soundtrack is mostly made up of upbeat club electronic music and hyperpop, which gives the game extra flair and energy. My personal favorite in the game is Ninajirachi. New songs unlock gradually through keys earned by leveling up in the game. A nice bonus is support for VR, gamepads, and the classic keyboard+mouse setup (and don’t worry – unlocking everything the game offers isn’t hard at all. Plus, even while playing the songs, you can use a couple of non-cheaty but helpful modifiers if things get really tough). But there are also some quirks when it comes to difficulty. On easy and medium levels, only the three core mechanics mentioned at the start of the review are used. Starting from the "Hard" level up to the max difficulty "XD," "clap" elements are added, which require you to hit the spacebar. Again, from "Hard" difficulty onward, you have to juggle the mouse while holding the spacebar, and with all the effects happening, it becomes pure chaos that’s basically impossible to nail on the "Perfect+" rating. On the flip side, medium difficulty eventually feels too easy and repetitive, which can get boring, and even on "Hard" (if you’re aiming for minimal challenge) getting an S-rank on the first try is almost impossible due to the speed of the songs and the reaction time needed. Even though the game is said to be like Guitar Hero or DDR, it’s truly a solid indie project. Spin Rhythm XD is a great rhythm game that just needs a bit of polishing and is ready to bring joy to fans of the genre. P. S. 2x. Did you like the review or my profile? Let me be clear: I have the musical timing of a box of dial-up modems falling down a flight of stairs. Yet within an hour, Spin Rhythm XD had me feeling like I was deeply connected to the soul of every track. It's a masterpiece of accessible design and should be an instant buy for fans of rhythm games + high-energy EDM. If you're looking for a party rhythm game without cheap plastic peripherals, SRXD is as inclusive as it gets. Start with a couple of buttons and a left/right shuffle. Mouse only? Yes. MIDI turntable? Of course. A 35-year-old NES PowerGlove? Probably. It’s deceptively simple, but the escalating complexity and synchronous click‑clacking keeps you engaged throughout. Each hand-crafted track is a clinical translation of the audio instead of an underwhelming auto-transcription. The difficulty curve is ambitious with five settings, each layering on additional interaction. The highest level is fittingly named XD, I imagine because it resembles the look of someone who enjoys being repeatedly kicked in the crotch. This is less a difficulty setting and more a test of your controller's structural integrity. Visually, it’s clean, vibrant, and fully customisable. Gorgeous without being distracting. The soundtrack might be a deal-breaker though if EDM’s not your thing. I liked most of the core tracks, but the Chillhop DLC was more my speed, and proof this game can breathe and slow down without losing challenge. I’ve been left wanting more, even with extra tracks added through updates. Crypt of the NecroDancer? Just Shapes & Beats? Tetris Effect? There’s so much crossover potential. Thankfully, the SpinShare community helps fill the gap with intelligently designed user-made charts (just maybe avoid the XD-only ones at first). SRXD isn't trying to be the next Clone Hero, Osu!, or Audiosurf. It's not about technical mastery or endurance; it's about the joy of flowing with the music. A genre reset with accessibility at its heart, capable of converting even the most rhythmically challenged.

Favorite rhythm game of all time. Been playing since early access and love watching it evolve! It's like playing an instrument. You can take a break for months, and return to play new songs like you weren't on hiatus! Devs, please bring back online multiplayer :) Also please make a cyberpunk/midtempo DLC pack! I'll have ur babies if you do!

Banger game. I have three very compelling arguments for why this is one of the best purchases of my life: 1. I've played a lot of rhythm games over the years, and in my opinion, this one has the most expressive gameplay. Since starting this game, I have played many charts that feel like an extension of the songs themselves. 2. The skill ceiling is very high (and the difficulty curve is very smooth as well), with community-made customs going even higher, ensuring that dedicated players will never be lacking in new experiences or new heights to reach. After 120+ hrs, I'm still improving and I still have even harder charts to work towards. 3. Every few months (for over two years now since version 1.0), a new free update comes out with 2+ new songs, and the highest difficulty setting is comprised exclusively of charts created and voted for by the community. This level of developer dedication to their community is something the games industry needs more of. It's honestly hard to describe in words how perfect this game feels to play, and even the trailers weren't very convincing when I first looked at the game-- I really think in order to understand how amazing SRXD is, you need to play it for yourself (fortunately there's a demo for that). As a final note: I know that there's a lot of hype around the MIDI turntable support, but as a keyboard and mouse player, I would like to assure you that you don't need any special controller to have a great time.
