A small Minesweeper variant. Nothing much to say except it's nice. A good puzzle game if you don't mind minimalist appearances. 😊 If you enjoyed this review, please check out my curator page to find more : [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45590889-Ele%2527s-Little-Recommandations-Corner/]Ele's Little Recommandations Corner !

Coming from the minesweeper-like Hexcells trilogy I was curious about what other kinds of logic based games Matthew had in store. Since the bundle included 2 more games this one was next and upon booting it up I noticed the direction was different this time even if the presentation didn't appear to be that way. Let’s see how it went down. Unlike the previous games, this one is based on nonograms, also known as Picross. These are the classic grid based logic puzzles where you need to color certain cells based on certain indications, usually following numbers. In that sense you could make the correlation to minesweeper and if you’ve played the previous games some of those variations are related as well. In fact, they are there to make the game more challenging although not so much to alienate the casual gamer. Regarding its presentation, after adjusting the display resolution properly to your corresponding graphical set up which may not be as easy as it sounds, the minimalist and clean Helvetica facade brushes away any type of distraction, constituting the perfect environment for this kind of puzzler. As a result you can play this on a coffee break, with some tea and toast on the side, even while listening to a podcast with people whose opinions you may not agree with. It's all fair game in order to get those lovely 3 stars at the end and the chime of level completion. In short, if you want to try a tiny albeit engaging logic variation to nonograms or you’re in need to perfect games to increase your Steam profile statistics, here's an offer.

SquareCells provides the Hexcells treatment to picross (minus the picture element), i.e. adding additional complexity to the puzzles. Compared to actual picross games, the SquareCells grid never gets particularly large, never getting any larger than 14x14. Like the Hexcells trilogy, SquareCells contains 36 puzzles, some of which have one or two very hard-to-figure-out moves you need to make that need very close attention to work out. The Hexcells Infinite random generation hasn't been carried forward to this one, however, so replayability is limited by that. Unfortunately, whilst the puzzles themselves are fun and tricky, and like Hexcells, are possible without guesswork, the game is let down a little by it's presentation, primarily in graphic for flagged cells not being distinct enough to make out easily, particularly under certain colour schemes. Plus, some of the wording of the tutorials could be better, particularly when explaining the numbers within the cells themselves, as it took me a bit to actually figure out that particular mechanic. For this reason, and for the limited short-term replayability, I'm only giving this one a 7/10. Good, but some flaws.

This game was not what I was expecting it to be (I hoped it would be more nonogramy), but it is still a pretty nice and enjoyable puzzle game.
