Aug. 2025
Oh yeah. Oh yeah. This game's got the sauce. What's traditionally been a pen-and-paper puzzle game whose digital adaptations call for only the most rudimentary UI/UX and visuals is taken so far past those bare minimums in this game that it's beyond comparison and genuinely peerless within the genre, period. I'm going to temporarily ignore the "fluff" and start with the puzzles: every one I've played has been fun, solvable, and satisfying. There's a tactility to the sound effects and visuals that multiply that satisfaction to the utmost degree. The bubbly click accompanying each marked cell, the deep, heavy pencil scratch through a row/column's numbers when completed, and the ever important sparkly fanfare when a puzzle is completed make it impossible not to jump right into another puzzle-- or rather, it would be impossible if not for the aforementioned "fluff". I call it "fluff" because in only the strictest sense, none of it is required to satisfy the demands of puzzle game enthusiasts, but with every puzzle completed you unlock cosmetics. See, the character creation in the promotional material for the game is the very first thing you do when you boot up the game, and once your thus-far naked rodent friend is decided upon, you're actually thrust into the game outside the puzzles you've predominantly signed up for before you've even filled a single cell. It's never the focus of the game, and you're not required to engage with home design or your furry friend's wardrobe, but you'll be hard-pressed not to find yourself engaging with these systems when your buddy's munching away adorably on snacks in the corner of your screen while you solve, dropping any hints you might need when called upon, and cheering for you at the final filled cell before returning to his home you have (or haven't) furnished for him. I love this little guy so much it's unreal. With that said, believe it or not, the added context of the home decorating/dress-up actually adds to the gameplay in a surprisingly subtle way. One of the greater failings of the genre is that the quality of the picture you're puzzling together is tied directly to its difficulty; if you're still learning the game on 10x10s, you're not gonna be painting a very cool picture in most nonograms. But this game "cheats" in an incredibly clever way: what you're solving isn't necessarily a picture, but a representation of a much more complex object that convincingly comes into being in a flashy summoning animation superimposed atop your puzzle. In this way, the puzzles serve less as a simplification of an image than an abstract representation of a 3D object that you're manifesting upon completion. A puzzle can look like a nonsense smattering of pixels, but when you discover how your puzzle applies to the shape or texture of your new furnishing, you get a second small "ah-ha!" moment. This blows the design space for these puzzles wide open since you're not restricted to oft-used lame pixel art. It's not just an elegant solution to the constraints of the genre but a genuine evolution that pushes the genre forward. This is a game I can't stop thinking about while I'm playing it; I'm constantly surprised by one brilliant design decision after another and can't help but shake my head and smile. I doubt anyone asked the devs to include in-game emails full of adorable pics from rodent rescue shelters; much like the rest of the game, I suspect it was done out of love.

I love this little gay rat puzzle game. I love my fat gay rat. After finishing a puzzle I feel so clever, and its extra satisfying because the puzzle turns into a piece of furniture that I can put in my fat gay rat's little gay rat house.

if it was literally just the puzzles it would already be like top five picross games because of the counting tool and all of the customization but on top of that you get a gay little rat on your screen at all times . 11 / 10

Comfortable to play on Steam Deck, incredibly customisable and difficulty that is varied throughout so it never becomes a repetitive slog. Easily the best nonogram game I've played in years and unironic contender for my game of the year! The customisation is an incredible addition, my rat in ace pride gear means everything to me.
