Star Fire: Eternal Cycle - 100% Completion Review Score: 7.5/10 Genre: Side Scroller / Action Roguelike / Hades-Like / Beat 'Em Up After fully completing this game, i'll give some pro's, neutrals and cons PRO'S: -Good protagonist that is well designed and cute -Lots of different outfits to choose from once you unlock them, they're all very stylish and well designed -Tons of different weapons to unlock that each have their own special animation when you use the 3 filled bar ability, which is really cool -Strong amount of x-appeal, tons of spice -Good effects that are stylish and fun to look at -Gameplay and combat is quite fun and engaging, games strongest point really -Each core that you can collect has a element which when combined with cores of the same element give you additional effects and abilities, encouraging experimentation -Has passive equipment's that you can collect each run that help buff your character even more past what cores can do -Movement and dodging is very well done and seamless -Good monster design -Good boss designs -Lots of different passive abilities to unlock back at base, as is expected for these type of games -Has a 8 directional movement setting if you don't like the old school type of side scroller movement -Has a giant panda? cat? blacksmith guy who will sell you equipment and upgrade and refine your cores, it is never explained who or what he is, he just is -Flawless performance, no lag, crashes or bugs NEUTRAL'S: "No Score Change From These" -Level design is ok, nothing special -Music is average -The U.I. screen when choosing your next path is rather plain -Controls are a bit awkward and may need to be remapped -Game length about 10+ hours, depends on luck, rng obviously -Game pretty much requires you to create broken builds to succeed, not sure if that's a good way to balance a game to be honest, but since most people would do that regardless i suppose it's a moot point -Fair warning, game requires you to have decent reaction times due the sheer amount of dodging you have to do CON'S: -Story is pretty much non existent and nothing is really explained, there are notes you can find that give little tidbits but not enough to properly explain what's going on, game really needs a proper prologue -Enemies can sometimes spawn right at the beginning of the area giving them a free hit on you before you can react Overall Star Fire: Eternal Cycle is a decent enough game, it falters in terms of story and proper context but makes up for it in fun and engaging combat and gameplay, if you like action roguelikes or Hades like games then you will probably like this game just fine, but as always, It's.. Up.. To.. You and i'll leave it at that. (^_−).

I had a solid 8 hours of fun with this game, but unfortunately that will be about it. My issues were mostly that the choices rarely mattered in the end, as you could force a build that is able to buy everything in every run. Then you just held the X button until the Y button was ready, rinsed and repeated. Dodging hardly mattered at the end because a) there was so much stuff on the screen that perfect dodges were either completely impossible, or incredibly punishing, and b) any build that regens health or has a lot of armor vastly outperforms any dodging build. Don't get me wrong, I'm not lying when I say I had 8 hours of fun in this game. It was a spectacle! You shouldn't go into this expecting another endless roguelike, however.

Some negative reviews are comedy. Bullet sponge bosses? I’ve destroyed elites and bosses with out getting hit. Learn the core system, how to forge, and merge the cores in the shop. Pick cores with similar rarities and don’t be afraid to read what they do. You’re welcome😂

(Ignore the low playtime, as I played the previous demos and playtests) I wish I could give this a sideways thumb. The presentation is good but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. This is one of those action roguelikes that only feels good when you get a build going, but is a boring frustrating slog otherwise. The main reasons for this are the flawed defensive options, HP sponge elites/bosses, and nonexistent moveset size. The pacing of the game when you have a build going is really fun, but if you don't get something online you're just holding the attack button down for ages. Oddly enough there is hitstun and juggling in this game, but because there's only four moves per weapon, it feels like the game is teasing you with a deeper combat system it doesn't actually have. This was a problem in the demo and playtests, and sadly wasn't fixed. The game has a weird version of Witch Time which is harder to trigger than its inspiration, but also provides no invincibility, but even then all the player can do is hold the attack button down more. Metaprogression is a bit uninteresting but serviceable. It seems like if you beat the game multiple times that more things open up, but the game doesn't give the best first impression. Some of the things that plague this game like HP sponge elites/bosses and the lack of moveset depth will definitely make you wish this was an early access game instead, but whether this game is worth investing time and money into depends on how receptive the team is the feedback. At this pricepoint and with its current lack of combat depth, Blazblue Entropy Effect is a much better choice despite this having all original assets which make it look cleaner. If you want a beat 'em up with action roguelike elements, OverRider and Wendigo Blue here on Steam are much better choices and cheaper than this is. I'd rather not refund because I relate to the development team's struggles (I played their previous game Metal Revolution), but there's just not enough meat to the gameplay in its current state. Keep an eye on updates and hope that it improves.
