Sept. 2025
Outstanding. I cannot recommend this game highly enough. It's an absolute blast, and the biggest, best Steamworld game to date. It's approximately twice as long as other Steamworld games. The Good - The Music. Steam Powered Giraffe is back with their best work yet. While their album on the original Steamworld Heist was still good, it was a little hit or miss for me. This... this is an ost for the ages. I've been listening to the ost on loop for weeks now. This is one of the major highlights of the game for me! - The Bounty System. In the first Heist game, it made sense to pick a few crewmates that you preferred and focused on only leveling those up. There were far too many crewmates to try and keep them all leveled up and viable. In Heist II, this is completely and totally fixed. After participating in a mission, a crewmate cannot be used again until you rest at a bar and end the day. But, the more missions that you squeeze into a single day, the more bounty points you receive. You can cash these in at the end of the day to receive exclusive rewards. Therefore, you're incentivized to use the entirety of your crew. And when you get more crewmates, you are able to do longer days and receive more bounty! It's a win win. There's no "stress" to keep crewmates leveled up and viable because that happens naturally. The bounty system creates such a satisfying loop where you want to optimize the maximum amount of missions you can do in one day. There's so much more that can be written about how great the bounty system is, but I'll leave at at this. - The Job System. Crewmates are no longer tied to specific classes or weapons. Instead, any crewmate can do any class. These classes, which are known as jobs, also have a level cap of 5 instead of 10. Crewmates still have unique special abilities to keep them all separate from one another of course. But here's the most important detail... if you switch jobs for a crewmate, they can use abilities they have already unlocked from other jobs! This means that once you max out your preferred job for a crewmate you will want to switch jobs to start reaping the benefits of two jobs worth of special abilities. It's brilliant and exciting to see job combinations. - The Overworld. I loved controlling the sub and taking it around the world. There were sometimes where the distance you needed to traverse to get to a mission felt a little long. But other than that, it's such a massive upgrade from the first game. The submarine combat is surprisingly interesting and refreshing between missions. They get a lot of mileage out of it, especially in the third act. I just appreciate having a break between the intense tactics of a mission. - Quality of Life. We finally have undoing! You are able to undo 2 turns at a time. Does this make it so you can almost never truly fail a mission? Well... yes by save scumming. However, I was very happy to have the option and not get frustrated for making a simple mistake. I'm unsure if higher difficulties remove this. But for my playthrough on the default difficulty, it made the experience so much more enjoyable. There are also, at least at the default difficulty, no punishments for failing or aborting a mission. It was SUPER frustrating in the original to fail because of how harsh the punishment for failing was (-50% water). So glad they removed that, at least at the default difficulty (Experienced). - Art Direction. INCREDIBLE. The best looking Steamworld game yet! - Level Design. Unlike the original Steamworld Heist, the levels are no longer "randomly" generated. The original Heist had some sort of soft level variation with rooms appearing in slightly different orders or sizes in missions. This was removed in favor of hand-crafted levels. These levels still feature occasional enemy placement variation and cover variation. Missions felt more distinct from one another as a result, and I think the level design was much stronger because of this change! - Core Gameplay. It's more Steamworld Heist! The gameplay feels on par with the original and only enhanced because of the longer total playtime. Individual characters end up with way more actions available to them at the end compared to the original. Each job is interesting and worthwhile on its own. There weren't any jobs that I felt were unviable or overly strong. If you enjoyed the original, then you'll absolutely love this. - Sound Design. Killer. Every gun and weapon feels super powerful. This ties into game feel, and wow every attack feels amazing! The Okay - The Story This is unfortunately the weakest part, not just of this game, but every Steamworld game. They tried to have a good arc for Captain Leeway, and there was a real genuine attempt. The core beats were all there, but the story never quite had the writing chops to wrestle with any deep conflicts. It carries a very happy-go-lucky and comedic tone all the way through. This works, although, I'd prefer if the writing would try and get more serious. Like I alluded too, there was an attempt a little over half way through during a dark moment in the story. Except, Leeway is too happy-go-lucky to get truly serious. With all that being said, I never expected this game to have a great story nor necessarily wanted one. I did like Leeway as a character overall, but I just had to accept that this game was never going to be "deep" because it's a Steamworld game. The Bad Nothing to see here! 9/10 The only thing stopping it from being a 10 is the story ;) other than that... please play!! It's incredible!

The core game's solid and no hesitation recommending this game - it's fun, has interesting builds and weapons, and it's better than the first game in every way. Music - I don't even like this genre normally, but it's done really well and didn't bother me at all. Props to whoever handled the soundtrack. However there are some nitpicking I just have to get out of the way: * The submarine exploration is a cool addition and gives you a new way to navigate the world. But the combat feels clunky, especially when you're underwater, and by late game you're pretty much forced into specific builds whether you like it or not. * Crew builds - it feels like you're wasting cogs if you don't level up different jobs for your characters. Why can't experience just transfer over to other jobs since experience is "in reserve" anyway? If I want to stick with a combo that works, let me do that without feeling like I'm playing inefficiently. * Builds never feel complete either. I finished the whole game and still felt like my characters could've been way more developed. It's frustrating when you reach the end credits but your team still feels half-baked. I even grinded a few missions but it seems too much to reach max level. I realise I could just use the same 4-5 crew members, but the game pushes you towards using your whole crew for different missions due to the bounty and exhaustion system. * Combat - you can't see what's inside rooms until you open them. I'd gather my whole crew for what I thought would be a big fight, only to find an empty room or like two enemies in a tiny space. Just let me peek through the keyhole or something. Also, melee characters felt weak to me. It's hard to target flying enemies (which there are a lot of), and it feels unsatisfying when enemies just waltz past you - it would be cool to have opportunity attacks or something. * There's this sense of an open world, but in reality you've only got a few routes available at any given time. The rest is gated off, which makes the exploration feel more linear than it should. Despite all this nitpicking, I still had a good time with it. The core gameplay loop is solid enough that these issues don't kill the experience. Worth picking up if you enjoyed the first game or you're into turn-based strategy.

I loved the first SteamWorld Heist game, and this sequel ended up being more than I could hope for. Many aspects that I liked from the first game are developed on in ways that I really appreciated here. There's plenty of content, engaging levels, and a serviceable story. Also, Steam Powered Giraffe provided some great thematic tracks to set a very fun mood. Few games have had me grinning as wide as this one did.

Good game! Got a bit annoyed over a difficulty spike at a certain point, but once I let go of the feeling of having to perfect every mission and instead revisit them after level up the game was alright again. It does get a bit tedious with the backtracking and the sleep mechanic, but overall it's a fun experience. Runs flawless under Proton.
