In recent years there's been a lot of attempts to capture the soul of old, dead series and revive them for an audience longing for what they once had. Paper Mario isn't dead - not literally anyway - but the modern entries are near unrecognizable from the old save for the Thousand-Year Door remake, and so they too have been a target of such attempts. To revive what was once lost. Escape From Ever After is the most recent product of the indie spiritual successor fervor, joining Bug Fables and others in this particular camp. Unlike Bug Fables or its contemporaries however, this game truly succeeds at what it sets out to do. Not only is this game easily the best of the "Paper Mario clones", but from a pure gameplay standpoint, it's probably the best Paper Mario game period. Every party member is consistently useful and fills a unique niche, and the game actively encourages you to switch them around as often as possible in combat, leading to some really interesting fights. That isn't to say that they're all equal - Wolfgang, the bard character, can pierce defense and shields, which makes him a complete beast and one of the most consistently reliable characters - but at no point during the game did I ever feel like one of my party members was lagging behind the others. This is helped along by the fact that the game utilizes a badge system much like its inspiration, but with each character having their own BP count and badge setup, including unique moves just like Mario would get. Likewise, the puzzles often incorporate multiple partner abilities in a variety of distinct ways, with some fascinating interactions that keep the overworld areas feeling very fresh. One of the party members' abilities lets you play OoT-style songs. 10/10. From the first area, to the very end of the game, I was consistently surprised by the variety of the puzzles and really had to use my brain more than a few times towards the end. Often times, they end up closer to a Legend of Zelda puzzle than a classic Paper Mario puzzle, and the blend of overworld puzzle solving and strong combat kept me engaged the entire way through. Of course, half of Paper Mario's soul comes from the writing - and this game nails it. An extremely memorable cast of characters, a story with surprising depth, and a variety of worlds across the game's four chapters that span a truly unexpected range of genres. The story doesn't do anything particularly surprising, but the setting is consistently fun and the character writing is super funny on the whole. Unlike Paper Mario, each of your party members feels like a fleshed-out character and they're all involved in various cutscenes and moments throughout the story, rather than the game just having the guy you're currently using comment on things. The game only has 5 chapters total, but there's a lot of meat on the bones between the chapters, and each chapter feels relatively long. Some will say that the game "falls off" after the second chapter, and while the second chapter is by far the best in the game, the latter half doesn't feel weak or unengaging by any means, and they're more a victim of Chapter 2 being as good as it is than being bad on their own merits. It also has a hard mode for genre veterans, which isn't particularly difficult compared to a number of Paper Mario romhacks, but is excellently balanced on its own merits and should absolutely be the way to play if you're experienced in its inspirations. Honestly, I loved this game. Like I said, I might actually think its the best Paper Mario game, at least from a gameplay standpoint. I can't think of a single real negative here. If you're a stranded fan yearning for a similar experience, you should absolutely play this. The combat is great, the characters are great, the music consistently slaps, and there's always something interesting around the corner. It also has a Pit of 100 Trials, for you sickos out there. What's not to like?
I've played all PaperMario-likes so far. Rainbow Billy (which is getting a sequel) deviated a bit much for my taste. Born of Bread was competent but meh and I couldnt be bothered to finish it. Bug Fables was very good but felt cheaply made, and The Outbound Ghost was a disaster. Escape from Ever After is up there along with Bug Fables vying for the crown, however, its not a perfectly polished experience. The cracks are visible, and Paper Mario likes have to compete with the polish of Nintendo and Intelligent Systems so your tolerance might vary The problems is have stem mostly from how depth can be annoying to get a grasp on given the perspective resulting in missed attacks in the overworld, or problems with some of the platforming and jumping My second problem is that the quality of the chapters worsens in the second half and that the balance of the game never fully clicks like TTYD This isnt bad by any means, its like admiting that a metroidvania falls short of Super Metroid, most do, its just the subgenre has so many entires some that match it are bound to crop up. As more PaperMariolikes appear we may see more polish, better balance, deeper mechanical exploation of Partner abilities... the places where Escape falls a bit short. I think Bug Fables had more solid game balance and combat mechanics, even if Ever After seems to be more ambitious at almost everything else. The story is just as good as Bug Fables too Basically the plot concerns a traditional hero, storming his eternal sworn nemesis' castle to discover the castle is now the local branch office of a Megacorporation from the Real World, which is using the technology to travel to the collectively willled to life worlds of stories in the imaginary plane, to extract resources from those worlds and turn the characters into a cheap labor force. Our hero and his nemesis get jobs in the company with the eventual goal of taking the company down from within The characters are well put together, decently written, the script is funny, and even the Corporate Manager has a surprisingly empathethic motivation and back story. It's not quite as well written as a core Paper Mario game, but it's a damn valiant attempt and it kept me engaged enough to keep playing along at a time im finding it harder and harder to finish games. If you can take the rough edges, its a great experience for Thousand Year Door fans
I'm flabbergasted and shook. I don't know how two people made this. The puzzles, combat, length, atmosphere; all of it is at least double A quality, if not triple. The second to last dungeon might be my favorite of any Paper Mario game and it's not even Paper Mario. There's not much I could say that hasn't already been said by other positive reviews. I typically list pros and cons, but this was all pros. Hard stop. Believe in your dreams. Make art. Play games.
Paper Mario, especially Paper Mario 2, holds an incredibly special place in my heart. I even have a Punio tattoo. It is a game I played with my brother as a kid, and we would take turns making up voices for the characters. As adults, we have an incredibly complicated relationship due to severe mental health struggles. But this game pulled me right back in time, sitting with my older brother, making funny voices and laughing until we cried. I hope that some day we will play Escape from Ever After together like that, and I want to just give my heartfelt thanks to the team for making that a possibility. I don't know if the devs will see this; but thank you, truly. If you love Paper Mario, especially the first two, this game is for you. I can't even begin to describe how much I love the story, and the dialogue. It truly is such a love letter to those games, while being unique and maintaining it's own voice. The gameplay is SO fun. I love that there are callouts to the the Paper Mario games in combat, while keeping things different enough that it doesn't feel like a copy paste. As I stated above, the dialogue and plot are just perfection. Fighting capitalism with cute critters inside enchanted storybooks? I hope the devs are able to make sequel upon sequel to this game.
