We're dealing with a studio called Key here, which means you should probably expect to burst into tears every few hours. This is also one of the few places where the writers weave blatant melodrama to induce tears, and players willingly sign the contract on that. If you're new to Key works, don't start here. I would instead recommend either Little Busters (2007) for its tear-jerking friendship story, or Clannad (2004) for its extremely powerful family plot. Summer pockets is still good, and I suggest circling back to it after you’ve experienced either. There are simply more potent introductions to this studio’s magic. This is a heart-wrenching story centered on familial love, featuring a painfully real kid who is the heartbeat of the story. The protagonist's character arc may feel shallow, almost like he's not the real main character, but don't worry. Just read on. It will make sense. Even the setting's time period holds a narrative purpose. The near-perfect soundtrack also pulls me deeper into the world, making the island feel lived in. Likely the most atmospheric Key work I've ever read. For veterans of Key's previous works: This is basically a modernized mosaic of all pre-Rewrite Key themes. You will like it more if you like Clannad though, due to the story's heavy focus on family. It feels like a retreat to safety. A bit of a letdown after the ambitious experiments of Rewrite. Still a top-tier VN on its own, just a bit anachronistic in Key's catalog. Almost like they are looking backward in time, as if tomorrow isn't going to come...

Words cannot simply describe how much this game means to me. I played the original Summer Pockets in 2021 and absolutely loved it, and my feelings have only grown stronger after playing Reflection Blue. Reflection Blue preserves everything that was great about the original game---the characters and their interactions with one another, the heavenly music, the fantastic art, and the beautifully heart wrenching scenario---while adding a full-game's worth of new content. The new routes for preexisting characters, while perhaps not as strong as the original four character routes in certain cases, are a very welcome addition, with the completely new character route introduced in Reflection Blue being arguably the single best character route in both versions of the game. Reflection Blue also tastefully supplements the routes from the original game with additional CGs and insert songs, strengthening the already excellent direction. The new take on the original table tennis minigame is quite fun and adds a lot of new character interactions that fans are sure to enjoy. In addition to the character routes and main scenario, the game also contains a lot of hidden interactions and encounters, creating a world that feels genuinely alive. I waited for years for Reflection Blue to receive an official English release. I became active on Twitter for the express purpose of begging VisualArts/Key's then-President for an English version of Reflection Blue. I ended up becoming fluent in and learning how to read Japanese during that wait, leading to the quite ironic outcome of me playing Reflection Blue in Japanese even after it was officially released in English (which is part of the reason for my long playtime; there were still quite a few characters that I did not know how to read and had to look up in a dictionary. I should however note that it would not be surprising for someone reading in English to spend over a 100 hours in this game due to the sheer amount of content contained within it). Even though this was technically my "second playthrough" since I already played the original game previously (and I've also watched the anime adaptation), the game's emotional moments were just as strong as they were during my first playthrough. Quite simply, Summer Pockets is a masterpiece, and Reflection Blue is the definitive version of Summer Pockets. With all outstanding "technical" issues now resolved, you should not hesitate to purchase this release if you are interested in playing this game.

I finished Summer Pockets the day before my summer vacation, which was somewhat ironic, but it was very nice to spend my time after long and tiring days in a peaceful place like Toshirojima. Summer Pockets is another great and emotional game from KEY that reminds me a lot of AIR and CLANNAD because of its themes, yet it still has its own charms. The art and music are amazing as always, and the minigames are incredibly fun this time, making you feel like you are truly in vacation mode. Although I loved all the characters, the heroine routes felt somewhat lukewarm to me, especially the Reflection Blue ones. Summer Pockets was really fun and good, but not life-changing as other KEY games were to me. And that's okay. It is also nice to see that KEY actually listened to complaints with this release, so props to that too.

I don’t understand what the mixed reviews are all about - this is perhaps the greatest, most innovative table tennis game on Steam. It has everything you could ever want - an endurance mode, a full tournament arc, doubles and singles play, and even this cool power-up that makes everyone yell “KIEEEEEEEEEHHH.” They do replace a traditional scoring system with life bars that I would typically associate with Street Fighter or that one My Little Pony-looking fighting game, but I consider this a bold innovation to the table tennis formula, and it helps differentiate it from competitors like Eleven Table Tennis. I gather the developers, who were kind enough to include an entire visual novel with the game, made some undesirable alterations to the UI, some of the script, and a bit of the art in this side content. And if you take issue with these adjustments, I totally get it. Rest assured, the main gameplay seems to be untouched, and it holds up excellently. I also gather there might be an additional hidden minigame I've yet to uncover, and I may update this review to reflect that if I find it. Also, Ao is the best doubles partner. She makes a funny face when she yells “KIEEEEEHHHH,” and gives you a magazine when your racket breaks.

This is my favourite game of all time. Even after having played many, many games/genres over the years, this one has cemented itself as the one closest to my heart. I played it for the first time roughly 1 year into studying Japanese and so all of this is independent of the localisation and only applies to the original script as this version ships with it. This is a visual novel made by Visual Arts / Key, their stories have a reputation to be among the highest revered and influential Nakige, used for games that are meant to make you cry, while not written by Jun Maeda, the man behind other famous Key works, he did come up with the concept and wrote the opening track to the game which is one of the best non-vocal ones: ''Sea, You & Me''. On that note, the OST itself is truly remarkable which is only aided by the handful added tracks Reflection Blue added, I can not think of a single track that doesn't fit the scene or is of lower quality than any of the others. A personal highlight of mine are the vocal tracks which have and still do while re-listening, have made me cry more than I would like to admit, but that is the beauty of games or stories in general, to me. Personally, the strongest asset of this game is the consistent quality of all its routes, its characters, and its themes that go along with them. Everyone on the cast be it main heroine or side character, everyone I firmly believe gets a moment to shine at their brightest and while I do have a favourite, I would be lying if I said that I dislike any of them, far from it, I love every single one of them. For the routes, i do not want to even go into detail and simply implore to read them all, as everyone single one of them has made me shed many, many tears. Instead of saying what I believe the themes of this game to be, I'd much rather that anyone even slightly interested in the game to come to your own conclusion, meet the game at eye level, avoid looking at guides and let the game speak for itself. The game will absolutely not work for everyone, nor should it, but I believe that if the game works for you, it will leave an impression. All this review is really meant to show what this game means to me and if just one person gets interested thanks to this then I'm satisfied, as I strongly believe this game embodies what Summer means.
