Going forward, when discussing games that are “mid”, Terra Memoria will live at the front of my mind. This game is exceedingly average in every way. The narrative is acceptable, the characters are fine, and the combat is there. That doesn’t mean the game does nothing interesting. I like the overworld exploration and how new skills for characters are hidden behind interesting puzzles, though at the same time I do feel that as a result skills are drip-fed to the player and thus players will spend a majority of their time using the same skills. Tying skills to each other in duos and forcing you to choose one or the other is also a novel idea, though of the duos I found there was usually one that was simply more useful. Most novel was the idea of having three active party members and three supporters that change how their partner’s skills work with the press of a button. The three supporters are randomly assigned at the start of each battle and can massively aid (or sometimes hinder) in tougher battles. Turning AoE attacks into more powerful focused attacks (and vice-versa) is especially useful, while transforming an attack of one element into a randomly chosen different element or making an attack heal or heal attack are much more situational. The latter ability I particularly disliked with the attacker Moshang, who doesn’t have a heal to transform for several hours, though if you’re not a masochist like me who embraces chaos you can opt out of some character combos if you choose. If you’re looking for a story, the one here is pretty threadbare, centering around the cause of the loss of magic crystals that the society is based upon. Characters have their own subplots, like Syl’s (who is effectively the main character, at least of what I played) search for her lost parents or Meta’s identity crisis, and while this can be interesting there’s also very little updates to these subplots in the midgame. I also think that, while the characters interact in a very friendly and wholesome way, their relationships can be somewhat boring because they’re all friends as soon as they meet each other and there is never any intra-party conflict like you can find in some more (personally) interesting JRPGs. A major factor in Terra Memoria’s favor is the vibrant and bustling world. They really embraced the cartoonish style of their world’s design and every character and location is bursting with color and personality. Each new town or encampment you find feels distinct from each other and keeps you looking forward to where you’ll end up next, and NPCs often feel like recognizable individuals. It’s a very fun and interesting world to run around in, even if it wasn’t enough to keep me in the game until the end. I enjoyed my time with Terra Memoria until I didn’t, and it really did just come down to boredom with the narrative and characters, which didn’t seem like they were heading in a particularly interesting direction. The fantastic worldbuilding and novel (if often trivial) combat may be enough for others, though, and there’s certainly things about this game worth experiencing, even if in execution I felt they often fell flat. It’s a nice little sugary treat you can have between more substantial meals, one that you’ll forget you had in a day or two but can be worth it in the moment.

Outstanding! Powerful! One of the most creative battle system I did seem in a while. The story is great, the character are likable. Great visuals and audio! There is a lot to love! Definitely will be the first "JRPG" I will recommend to newcomers to the genre. Did cook every dish, actually invest some time on Caumanse/Beeghin/Initio, did every achievement, walkaround to look see the post game. I would totally put more hours if there was more to do. You can see the developers put a lot of effort into the game in every corner. I really wish the game was well know, totally deserve. I totally recommend the game!

Would I recommend this game? Maybe - it's made with a lot of love but for me it's also lacking in everything. So before getting it look a bit into what it offers. The universal good part is the graphics and style. It's pretty but the >game< itself is sadly extremly basic and I feel like they could have needed someone with more insight in actual gameplay and narrative design. From a technical point it plays smoothly but it's also very repetitive and bland. So get it if you are interested in the style and want a short but light adventure were you can turn your head off and just don't get challanged by story or gameplay. It's cute sometimes funny and the story while simple is engaging enough to cary itself over the duration. Also on a side not; the game often get's mentioned like "this is a new Breath of Fire" - no. Nothing but maybe the art style is like a BoF so don't fall for that comparison. For the parts I had problems with: Combat can be breezed through without any tacitcs and the quests are so easy since everything is on a narrow road. The whole structure repeats itself over and over and for such a short game that's not great. Simple gameplay is good and fine but there's a thin line towards boring. Towns are big but you have like 5 npcs to interact with the rest is dead and you search that one where the interact button pops up. A lot of empty text with the beggining of a narrative and world building but it dosen't have time to develop into anything meaningful. There's like two type of puzzles repeated - I was very bored towards 3/4 of it. Characters are simple but likable could use some more interactions. And the ending was sadly very anti-climactic. (I don't think "it's for new players of the genre" is a valid point that was made. That it just feels lacking has nothing to do with an entry level game. Lots of peoples first jrpgs where "more" and that wasn't a problem)

Terra Memoria is a game that puts fun and accessibility over challenge which is a rarity these days in the gaming market. With engaging characters, gameplay mechanics, and lack of typical RPG BS, this is one of the most fun games I've played in a while. While not perfect the charm and ease of gameplay made this game a huge standout even among indie RPGs. The lack of MP and instead using a system where the characters and enemies move down the line of attack order is not only a unique and fun system of combat but one that is easy to learn, master, and access for even the most novice of RPG gamer. The elements and shield system for the enemies is a fun system as combat but one that needs tweaking. It is too easy to break the shields with the proper element attack or simply blast through the enemies without much thought as too what attacks have the advantage or the placement of your character once their turn is through. Any strategy that might be need to decide which attacks should be used or by who is rendered useless once you realize that you're going to win regardless after a few turns. The fact that each character has two moves that the player has to decide which is use is also pointless because they're neither well balanced or needed when you again realize that you can tank the enemies into oblivion with relative ease with the default move set. While a good idea for the sake of customization and strategy it is ultimately needless. It is the customization where this game truly shines. You can tell the developers spent a lot of time playing different games and figuring out what they all lacked or needed and making sure that those same mistakes were not made in this game. Choices abound in this game making it as easy as you want or a fairly normal difficulty. Like I said it cuts out a lot of unnecessary BS which I am grateful for. The characters are great each with their own unique tale of self discovery and even a bit of existential dread. I enjoy how they each seem to inverse different tropes and how that feeds into their backstory that they need to overcome. Very anti-stereotypes which i appreciated. The story however left a lot to be desired being both predictable and shallow. The final aspect that I want to touch on is the building and town management aspect within the game. While a neat idea it feels under developed and half-baked with too much freedom and not enough boundaries to guide the player. While it add more to the freedom of customization and access it makes the entire system seem inept. It was too easy to put things like grass, fences, and people anywhere you want even on spots where they clearly shouldn't go. The entire town building mechanic seemed pointless and I found myself wanting to ignore it completely instead of delving into the endless options the game was giving me. the only reason I bothered with it at all was for the sake of the Steam achievement. In summary, this was an amazing quick and fun game that I would love to see more of in the future, hopefully with more fleshed out mechanics, world-building, and playable characters. Not being able to play as all six characters was a bit annoying. While having them in pairs with one being the attack while the other supports, it would be better to let the player decide who is attack and supporting so all characters can be used as both attack and support.

this is a recommend from me, but cautionary this game in my opinion only has one major issue, but it really is gonna be a major one for some people. it is far, far too easy (for an adult player anyway) - eventually you figure out one strategy that works for literally any general mob encounter with any array of spells, and you can also ignore the timeline strategy stuff entirely once you've spent a little bit of time with the system because it's so easy to exploit the weakness system. this meant I rarely cared about my builds or deciding which auxillary characters to pair with which party members. I'm aware this is going to be an absolute dealbreaker for many rpg players, and if I'd read this feedback before buying it I wouldn't have bought it, but having played it to basically the last part of the story so far, I don't regret buying it at all. so here's why... the game is really enjoyable. somehow I easily find myself returning to progress and having fun even with the ease of combat. I think this is because this is an extremely cozy game. something about the aesthetic, character design, lightheartedness, building features, hell even the sound effects are cozy. so I recommend it only if: -you love cozy games and want a cozy rpg experience, as there are very few cozy rpgs compared to the number of stardew valleylikes -you have a kid you want to play with or who wants to play do you like pokemon even though it's really easy? if so you will probably easily breeze through the 13 hours and find it well worth the price point
