Thank goodness they released limited physical copies of this game. I need this to be preserved for aliens to find, as the only proof that humans ever existed.

While a lot of love clearly went into the making of ‘Thank Goodness You’re Here!’, its absurdist British humour won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. As the gameplay takes on a backseat role to allow for a constant stream of jokes, it’s best to check if you’re part of the target audience when considering a purchase. It takes only a few minutes of playing Thank Goodness You’re Here! , developed by the two-person (!) studio Coal Supper, to realise just how much love went into creating this satirist take on British town-life: The charming caricatures that are representing common townspeople, the absurd events highlighting the ridiculousness of everyday life and, of course, accents that requires subtitles if you’re not familiar with this part of the world. This is the type of humour that can only be made by people all too familiar with the matter they’re depicting. Throughout the 2-3h long adventure, the protagonist – a salesman asked to meet the mayor of the fictional English town of Barnsworth - ends up helping the eccentric local villagers with their various problems, which range from not being able to make fish & chips to getting their hand stuck in the gully when trying to grab a pence piece. In terms of gameplay, this translates to some light puzzle solving, as the all the protagonist can do is move around, jump and slap things/people. Unsurprisingly for this type of game then, the humour takes front and centre. While the gameplay aspects aren’t completely gone and there are even achievements for going out of your way to perform certain actions, your enjoyment of the game depends almost entirely on how much you enjoy the increasingly absurd jokes that make up the quite linear story: The game’s puzzles, if stripped of their unique presentation, are simply too shallow to entertain on their own. As such, Thank Goodness You’re Here! is the type of game where I heavily recommend watching about 10-15 minutes of gameplay before making a decision on purchasing the game. As humour is extremely subjective, reviews can’t translate well whether you’ll like the game or not if it’s mostly a constant stream of interactive jokes. In my case, I bought the game based on one particular scene involving a pair of lowers – only to find out that the rest of the game was made up of more absurdist humour, which didn’t match my personal taste. Subsequently, while I still finished Thank Goodness You’re Here! due to its short length, I didn’t really enjoy my time with the game. However, I realise that this is simply a matter of personal preference in terms of humour, which is why I’m still recommending this game after all: Even if you really should make sure that you’re part of the target audience before playing, which I unfortunately didn’t, the labour of love that went into creating Thank Goodness You’re Here! should be acknowledged.

Thank Goodness You’re Here! is one among tragically few games which display the culture of their creators not just as passive inspiration, but as a fundamental building block from which all other elements of the experience are constructed. Just as the Katamari games are overwhelmingly and unabashedly Japanese, just as Red Candle Games’ works are inseparably tied to Taiwanese culture and history, Thank Goodness You’re Here! now makes its mark with a uniquely British experience that couldn’t have been made by any team that wasn’t intimately familiar with the Yorkshire smalltown lifestyle. Full of baps and Margaret Thatcher references and even a “dialect” subtitle option which remains indecipherable to my American eyes, the game oozes with English charm. Inherent to that culture and central to the game’s appeal is a rich and distinct comedic language. Full of surrealism and absurdity, Thank Goodness You’re Here! features a nonstop barrage of joke after joke after joke. It’s got all the quickness and innuendo of a Mighty Boosh episode, right down to the Crack Fox-style rubbish den, combined with the attention to detail present in the best of the best Bojack Horseman background gags (my personal favorite being the “Cook Queen” pie oven). The developers also clearly appreciate a good callback, bringing back old jokes in new contexts, allowing them to evolve over the game’s runtime. Even today, games still seem to be trying to figure out this whole “comedy” thing, so it’s nice to see a new team coming along to try and earn a spot alongside the Portal series and basically anything Tim Schafer has ever touched. Unfortunately, Thank Goodness You’re Here! lacks something that those games have, which is a meaningful hook. While the comedy is consistently enjoyable throughout and never overstays its welcome, the package it’s delivered in sort of does. There isn’t much plot to speak of apart from the miniature storylines of the various quirky townsfolk, and the gameplay – which consists of walking, jumping, and “slapping” to interact with things – is about as streamlined as it could be, leaving naught but a constant stream of slapstick gags, sharply-written callbacks, and British wit. I loved every bit of the game’s humor, but with no narrative hook and no real need to think about my character’s actions, I ended up struggling to stay invested. Even though it sits at a lean 3-ish hours in length, towards the end of the game, I was checking my watch and tapping my shoe, wondering when the laughs would finally be over. It may grow tiresome as the experience drags on, but it’ll at least leave you feeling mostly satisfied by the end of it. Reggie’s wife could learn a thing or two. 7/10

Not finished it but this is just the best game. Playing it on Christmas and grandma, the wee ones and myself are all in stitches. Probably my game of the year.

Probably the funniest game I've ever played. It's not very long (2-3 hours), and the gameplay isn't complex at all. But if you're looking for a relaxing time and a good laugh, you can't do any better. I had a smile on my face the entire play-through. Thank Goodness You're Here is reyt good and well worth the 10 bob. Honestly, Reggie's wife could learn a thing or two from this game.
