More an opening chapter than a game. Lovely characters and writing. Puzzles... to be desired a bit.

Recommended for: This is a bit of a weird game to review. The Blackwell Legacy is the first game in the Blackwell series, which consists of five games in total. The series as a whole is great and I highly recommend it to any point'n click adventure fan. That means you have to play this game first to understand the story. The Blackwell Legacy is not a terrible game, but it certainly isn't the best introduction to the series. It has some positive points, like a nice supernatural story, interesting characters and good voice acting. Unfortunately, the gameplay is somewhat of a rough experience. The puzzles don't make much sense and it's mostly trial-and-error clicking. The very first puzzle is a textbook example of why some people don't like adventure games. The game is also fairly short. Still, I do recommend playing it because like I said, the Blackwell series overall is worth playing. But if this had been a standalone game, I’m not sure I would have recommended it. My experience: I really have mixed feelings about this game. I like the story and characters, and I really liked the voice acting of the two protagonists. On the other hand, the gameplay is so annoying it makes me want to strangle someone with a ghost tie. I’ve played all of the Blackwell games and I found this one to be definitely the weakest of the series. Technical: I had no technical issues while playing, except the default music volume was a bit loud for me and there is no setting in the option menu to change it. I later found out that you can press F2 and F3 to change the music volume. (Win10,7800X3D,RX7800XT) Personal Rating: 2/5

I accidentally reviewed the wrong Blackwell like a doofus, so here's my review on the whole series: https://steamcommunity.com/id/magerama/recommended/80360/ These games could use an additional bump anyway (and them bloody numbers). Since I'm here, gotta say the first game isn't entirely representative, they only get bigger and better. Doesn't mean you should skip it, still a great adventure. But expect improvements, don't drop the series if Legacy didn't do it for you. I promise you'll get back to it with a new outlook after finishing Epiphany - and by that time you'll be craving more like a hungry spirit. This reminds me of Shadowrun. I didn't even like the first game initially, skipped straight to Dragonfall, then played Hong Kong... then crawled back to the flawed original with a newfound appreciation, embracing it like it's family.

I like it - I'm into Point & Click games since the 80s and this one feels just like one of those. It's not a must-play but it's nice, the graphics are quite cute, the characters are well done, the voice acting is pretty decent (although some voices were a bit muted and sadly there was no way to turn the music down and the voices up or something like that - but there are subtitles) and the story is a good one even if it's a bit short.

If you haven't played Unavowed, the 2018 game also by Wadjet Eye, go play that instead. It is more polished, with better writing, better sound, better puzzles, better graphics, better everything. It is set in the same universe in the same city in the same genre of story. If you have played Unavowed and you would be happy with a much less polished game made by a much less experienced Wadjet Eye, then give the Blackwell series a try, starting here. Later installments get better slowly, ending up significantly below Unavowed but still quite nice. All in all, I enjoyed this game and the rest of the series. If you don't like this game, I don't think it's worth hanging on for the later installments.
