April 2025
Review Despite the hours on record, I've played a good deal of this, primarily on the Steam Deck. I bought this on launch and boot it up every month or so. It's a lot of good fun, especially if you enjoyed Dead Cells. And I also think it's criminally underrated. Before I get into anything, I want to commend Evil Empire for being so committed to updating the game. It's gone through a lot of balancing, had tons of added features, got a complete visual overhaul - and it hasn't even been out for a year. As far as the review goes, I've been really impressed with what Evil Empire has put through. If I were to use a single word to define the game it would be "flow". And when you get into that flow, the game truly shines. Blending quick action combat with platforming parkour, dodging out of attacks and kicking enemies into each other before shredding them with your weapons. It's a lot of fun when you get the hang of it, especially after finding a weapon you resonate with. Personally, I've never been a big fan of Prince of Persia. That said, the setting does an excellent job complimenting the gameplay. The roguelite nature of the game is integrated into the game's narrative, a similar feeling to Hades at the end of your run. However, unlike Hades, I don't feel particularly drawn to any of the characters yet - nor am I really interested in learning more about them. But the story and characters aren't really a big aspect for these kinds of games. Ultimately I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoyed their time with Dead Cells. It plays very similarly, and Evil Empire has got that gameplay style locked down tight. If you haven't played that, then people who enjoy action-oriented beat-em-up roguelites will find something to enjoy here. And with some more time in the oven, I am genuinely looking forward to the future improvements and updates to the game. Verdict & TLDR Must Have Recommended Wait For Sale Pass On It The Rogue Prince of Persia delivers fast, fluid roguelite combat with parkour flair, and is especially satisfying once you find your groove. It's a hidden gem for Dead Cells fans, and Evil Empire’s steady updates make it worth trying out and/or keeping an eye on.

In a year that released two Prince of Persia games, this is the lesser of the two. And considering Lost Crown is a perfect 10 out of 10, this is following it as a 9 out of 10. It's incomplete in Early Access, but it's perhaps one of the most rewarding Rogue Likes I've ever played. While it rarely changes from run to run (until you get the modifiers that change things up), there is enough variation in some of the set ups that it isn't tedious to repeat. But where it shines is the FLOW STATE. When this game gets going, it gets GOING. Nothing satisfies like some of the tricks you can pull off in this game. Scaling walls, leaping around having to take advantage of your every tool. Each enemy has a different ability that completely changes how you interact with them and as such knowing how to keep up that speed and flow state while maximizing your kills in short order is a feeling of maximum bliss. The bar of quality here is just so high. Its very obvious Evil Empire is taking note of everything said about the game, and every update only does more for the game. Clearly this is a dev team that cares, and plans to chug ahead adding more and more. And one of the best runs I ever had involved multiple near death calls that had my hairs raised. Trust me, the game is good. It being 2nd best to Lost Crown should be taken as a compliment. And I mean it. If Lost Crown was my game of 2024, this is just behind it. Grab both. Please.

Dead Cells structure, Hades art vibe, PoP nostalgia, good stuff. Very acrobatic. Minus a point for Ubisoft, but I guess they own the license.

Bought this at launch, it was a little TOO early access back then - no real sense of meta progression, not enough item variety, some choppy performance...the bones were there and strong, but wasn't enough on those bones yet to really justify picking it up for the average person, so I put it down and let it cook for a few months. Roughly half a year later, you can feel the game is in a really great place now. The medallion system is easier to parse, the weapon variety is way up, performance is overall better, there's activities and alternate routes and story beats that were more fleshed out than before...the game feels like it's coming into its own now. And the movement. BROTHER, the movement is worth the price of admission alone. Flowing through saws and gears in true PoP fashion feels SPECTACULAR, this game really captures the essence of classic PoP but with modern fluidity and speed, it's great. If you loved Dead Cells, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up, and an even bigger update is coming shortly that should make this feel like a damn near complete game. I suspect this'll be out of early access sometime next year, and by the time it gets there it's gonna be an all timer. Worth picking up now, but has the ability to strive even farther.

Short on Content I have just played The Rogue Prince of Persia, and I must say, I enjoyed the experience. The controls are smooth, the combat is satisfying, and the procedural level design is good. However, while I had a lot of fun, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of content. The game felt quite short, and after just a few hours, I wanted more. The gameplay is solid, but I wish there were more biomes, challenges, more enemy variety, and bosses to keep the experience going. It feels like the game has so much potential, but it doesn't fully reach it because of the limited content. As a huge fan of Dead Cells, which I’ve played for hundreds of hours, I’m hoping that Evil Empire will expand The Rogue Prince of Persia in the future, also after full release. Dead Cells received amazing post-launch support with tons of new content from Evil Empire, and I hope The Rogue Prince of Persia will get the same treatment. The foundation is there for a good game, and with more content, it could become something truly special. That said, The Rogue Prince of Persia feels very similar to Dead Cells in many ways, but it doesn't offer anything particularly fresh besides its theme, art style, and some minor gameplay differences. The wall-running mechanic is one notable difference, adding a bit of the classic Prince of Persia flair to the game, but overall, there aren't many new features to set it apart. One of the biggest issues is the lack of variety in builds. Right now, every run feels the same because there isn’t enough diversity in the weapons and equipment. Every sword-like weapon feels too similar, and without the ability to create and experiment with different builds, the replayability takes a hit. The game could really benefit from a broader range of equipment and weapons, like in Dead Cells. Only having one weapon (you can't use the secondary all the time) isn't enough to keep the gameplay varied and engaging. On the positive side, the art style of The Rogue Prince of Persia is really good and distinct. Each biome looks and feels different from the others, which adds to the sense of exploration. The beautiful soundtrack also enhances the atmosphere, making the game more immersive and enjoyable. I also have to mention that I really like Ubisoft's approach to the Prince of Persia games with their last two titles. I hope they continue to make quality games like these rather than the soulless open-world games they've been putting out, especially in the last half-decade. Overall, The Rogue Prince of Persia is a decent game that I enjoyed playing, but it left me wanting more. I can't wait to see if the developers add more to it because it has the potential to be something really amazing with the right updates. I will give my medal after full release.
